Just a little update

Not sure I mentioned it, but, I picked up another contract with Parks Canada, this time only for ~2.5mo. I've been working for about a month now. While I'm working, my cellular plan is my only source of internet. I accidentally used up most of my 6Gb of bandwidth within my first two weeks, so the past two weeks I've had to be pretty conservative in my data use. In short, I've basically been without a computer over the past two weeks. It's kinda sucked, but, it's been ok Razz

Work has been as expected; the Park is beautiful, and it's great to work in nature. There's been a retirement, so there's possibility that I might be able to get on permanently (though seasonally) this year. I'm not super confident on the likelihood, but, I'm hopeful.

My wife and I also bought a new car. Mileage was our primary goal, so diesels were our primary candidates. Budgets limited us then to pretty much just Volkswagens... however the Mazda 3 with Skyactiv gets almost diesel-like mileage, so we tested one of those too. When we sat in the Mazda, both my wife and I felt very hemmed in and that the console was too cluttered with controls; though it seemed like it would perform alright, it just didn't make the list. In the end, we chose a 2013 Comfort Line Golf TDi with a manual transmission and have been pretty happy with it since.
If I don't get a permanent job, we'll end up selling our old car and go back to one car; if I get a job, we'll sell the old car and get another new one, perhaps a Beetle TDi. The cost of the new cars is only slightly more than what we're paying for the old one, most of which is offset by the fuel savings.

Hopefully I'll be around more in the coming weeks, since my data plan reset today... however, early this week, I've got some busy field work ahead of me, involving an overnight or two to get everything done. Shouldn't bee too much though Smile

Glad to hear you picked up a contract (however short). Hopefully you will get the permanent position. We could use some pictures of this park you are working at or a link to a website for the park.

Most of my shots are late season/winter, but here are a few:

Stunning photos Ankhanu. That one with the bear in it is unreal. Wow.

So now understand why we have been seeing less of you. Really glad you got an extension on your contract and here's to hoping for a permanent position for you. Looks as though things have been moving on the up and up for you this year, so maybe it's on the cards for you luck wise?

Like your choice of cars. I'm a Volkswagen person myself. The other day I was chatting to the maintenance guy who is also a friend of mine at the Volkswagen dealership. Just for an honest feedback of value for money Toyota compared with Volkswagen. Value for money Toyota is ahead, but safety wise, Volkswagen design is ahead of Toyota. I like the way he put it. I also recall when I was traveling in South Africa a few years ago, very early morning at around 5:00 a.m. Just before sunrise, and all of a sudden a buck appeared on the road out of nowhere while I was traveling 140km/hour. The ABS brakes of the Polo Classic worked perfectly. I think they must have saved me from hitting the buck and rolling the car.

I feel really bad for you, Ankhanu. Having to work in such beautiful office, must be real hard. Wink
Thanks for the photos.

Congrats with the employment and hopefully they seriously consider you for a permanent position. It looks like a beautiful place to work, love the pictures. The choose of vehicle sounds interesting, I may look it up out of curiosity. I don't own a car myself, I just bus everywhere but there are many places public t ran sit just can't go.
