In an unusual twist, I've been playing Magic the Gathering the past couple weeks with coworkers... I don't think MtG is really something that comes to mind when someone thinks of Parks Canada employees All the same, it's been fun teaching people to play and building decks with them.
I decided to try building a themed deck, rather than going for some function or random collection like usual, going for a Vampire theme. The idea was based around my Stromkirk Captain, a red/black vampire with first strike and provides other vampires I control First Strike and +1/+1. I don't have many red vampires, so the deck is black heavy.
Chosen of Markov
Wall of Shadows
Child of Night x2
Barony Vampire x2
Visara the Dreadful
Sengir Vampire x2
Taste of Blood
Wall of Torches
Talons of Falkenrath
Wrack with Madness
Great Furnace x3
I've played this deck three times.
First draft had more red mana, less black, but the balance didn't work, and I was struggling to draw Swamps all game. I swapped out 5 Mountains for Swamps, but otherwise left the deck.
The next two games were better, with better mana ratios... The second game ran ok, other than being afflicted with multiple Pacifisms; the end result was being milled to death, though. Third game I drew only mana, and was targeted by the other players and killed with only one creature on the table. This was something of a tactical error on their part, though, as I then checked the top of my library and it was going to be about 10 turns or so before I could get any creatures on the table. Their efforts would have been better set against an actual threat in the game
I'm gonna need to make some more adjustments, I think, but I'm liking the theme.
