Employment, Entrepreneurship, getting busy

It's been a busy couple months.
I haven't mentioned it due to some red tape involved in applying for some government support, but, I've been working on building a company with a friend. My partner and I both applied for provincially funded Self-Employment Benefits, which would provide some money to keep us afloat while we develop our business plan and get the company off the ground... part of the application involved us NOT being in business, and not doing anything that might be construed as advertising, so we've been pretty tight lipped. Another stipulation is that we can't be working another job more than 20hr/wk while on the program. Wednesday, we got notification of approval on our applications, and can start in on working on the business on Sunday!

Fortunately/Unfortunately for me, on Tuesday, I was offered a short contract working full time (37.5hr/wk) with Parks Canada again for about 3 months. This is great, because, well, a job! This sucks because it invalidates MY SEB application. We went in on Wednesday and my partner signed her contracts and I just sat in and got information, since my application was no longer valid. Unfortunately, once my short contract is over, I'm going to be a little screwed unless we get the business up and running by the end of September and have some profits (unlikely). Oh well Razz

On the lucky side of things, this short contract with Parks could lead to permanent (though 6month seasonal) employment this time. A coworker had retired this spring, which means his position is now open to be staffed, and I'll be able to apply for it, since I'll be a current employee within Parks... and if I don't get that, it will likely open up another position, since it will likely be staffed by one of the other people at my pay scale, opening their position for me to take.

Working full time with Parks will limit my availability for working on our business, but I'll be able to work on both; working with Parks Mon-Fri day time, working the business weekday evenings and on weekends. Looks like I'm going to have a busy couple months... Ive been unemployed since August 2012, and my partner and I have been held back by red tape trying to set up our business since May; I've been spinning my wheels for months. All of a sudden the red tape gets cut, I get a job, and a few other life events occur... lots to do all at once.

When it rains, it pours, I suppose.

That sounds awesome Ankhanu. Congratulations with the job with Parks. That sounds fantastic. Business sounds great too. I'd imagine if the Parks job is going to be seasonal that the business would be a great for making both happen. The one supporting the other.

Yeah, it would sound that way Wink
Unfortunately, the monitoring job is primarily through the summer months...
The business we're putting together is primarily centered around biological control of pest flies in agriculture... which is also primarily through the summer months.
Sadly, the busy periods of both jobs are concurrent. That said, I can certainly make it work, it just means being REALLY busy May-Sept.
