Entered my first Warhammer tournament

The local game shop is hosting a small 40k tournament this weekend, and I decided to enter. It's $10, and I doubt my army is competitive, but, I'm hoping it'll be fun, and it'll be a couple more games under my belt.
I'm not as far into getting my stuff painted as planned, but I've got the week. I'm going to focus on getting my Deathwing lookin' decent, I think.

This is the 1500pt list I put together for it. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Getting into a game sounds cool. I clearly need to read up on Warhammer 40k to understand what you're doing, but it sounds cool! Good luck!

Ditto. Good luck from me too! Sounds like an interesting hobby and curious to hear how it has turned out for you.

It's likely to turn out poorly, but, it should still be fun all the same Wink

This is what the list looks like (mostly) assembled -

I don't own a rhino, but will be borrowing a friend's. They're a dedicated transport, and will be attached to the Tactical squad in the back; they'll ride inside for extra defense, but it won't have weapons. They look like this:

Well, my first tournament got postponed; last time none of my friends were entered, and childcare fell through, so, rather than go through effort to go pay money to play with a group of all strangers, I just withdrew.
However, there's another one tomorrow, and I'm entered Razz This time, it's 1700pt, so a little bigger than last time. I was thinking of going for an all plasma list, but plasma can't damage heavy armour, nor shoot flying enemies; as such, I took two non-plasma options in the devastator squad: a lascannon (to damage heavy armour) and a missile launcher with flakk missiles (to shoot flyers). Every other option where I could take plasma, I did. In order to make my list WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get), I borrowed a few units/parts from friends: 2x plasma guns (to attach to my bikes with bolt pistols), marines with a plasma gun, a plasma cannon, and an arm with a plasma pistol, and a terminator with a plasma cannon and power fist, terminator with plasma cannon and chainfist, two terminators with stormbolters and power fists, and a Rhino.
This is what 1700pts spent looks like:

We played a test game on Wednesday; I played against a friend running Space Wolves with Imperial Guard allies. Though I lost the game, I largely managed to hold my own, which is pretty cool, because he was playing one of the strongest combinations of armies in the game. We'll see how well I remember all the rules tomorrow, and how I fare in the tournament. Should be interesting.

The tournament went pretty well. There were 11 of us registered (one, the shop owner bowed out after two games, though he was doing well; he needed time for some other things), and the day was divided into three ~2hr games.

Game 1 - Dark Angels vs Necrons

My opponent was pretty young, maybe 13-15, and, like me, pretty new to the game. With neither of us being very seasoned players, there were some rules mistakes (that I realized later), several of which I think worked in his favour. This game was based on capturing and holding objectives, of which there were 5 on the board. With the rules mistakes made, and the fact that Necrons are kinda tough anyway, we were somewhat gridlocked, with first blood (first unit to be destroyed) not being scored until the bottom of turn 2… we couldn't effectively hurt one another. In the end, by reaching one objective with no one else around, holding one since the beginning of the game and killing one of his units off of another, I ended up winning the game 10 points to 0.

Side note, one of his models had broken, so he modified it; it had lost its weapons, so he added two more arms and used green and blue resins to make blades, making it look like General Greivous Smile

Game 2 - Dark Angels vs Ultramarines

This was a relatively evenly matched battle, though I think my opponent was a bit stronger. He was also a seasoned player, so knew the rules and tactics better. The goal here was to kill as many enemy units as possible. Space Marines vs Space Marines tends to be a fair bit of *hit, *no damage sort of exchanges, and this was no different. In 5 rounds, though, he had certainly won the game, with 10 points to my 7.

Game 3 - Dark Angels vs Eldar

This was a "Relic" game; there's a single objective in the center of the board, we each are trying to take it back to our side of the board. His Eldar army just ripped my space marines to shreds. With the exception of the terminators I was able to bring in really close to his side from off the board, I didn't really get anyone any closer than ~20", all in long range of most of my guys' weapons. The terrain also meant my heavy weapon devastator squad couldn't get line of sight on a lot of his guys. In the end, he was the clear winner, and my army was a shambles. He won 6-0.

All my opponents were pretty swell fellas, and over the 8 hours I was at the shop, I enjoyed myself. In the end, I was at 1 win/2 loss, but, I did win "Best Painted Army" for the day, which gave me $18 store credit. I used that to buy 4 more pots of paint Wink

So, for $12.50 ($10 entry, $18 winning, $20.50 in paint purchase), I got 8 hours of gaming practice and experience playing against a couple armies that my friends don't play… all in all a win, I'd say Wink
