John Peel radio collection on Soundcloud

I came across some info alerting me to the fact that a Soundcloud user (+dB) has taken the time/effort to digitize the entire broadcast career of DJ/Producer John Peel, and has made it available through a John Peel Soundcloud set... that's 900 or so hours spanning his pirate through BBC radio career!

Many great bands made their way through Peel's studios through the years, and appearing on his shows could really thrust a band into fame (He launched the career of Billy Bragg, for example). He did incredible things for the UK music industry, and brought many bands from outside to UK listeners. Among my favourite Peel Sessions were New Order, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Nirvana, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and several others.

Cheers for the heads up Smile
I used to listen to his show as a kid, discovering new music in pre-internet days, writing down artist/song/label names then scouring vinyl shops and often waiting days for a delivery to arrive!

John Peel was a legend for many, including me. It's gonna be nice to browse through that Soundcloud collection now, I bet there are some amazing recordings that can make me go wow again.
...and all from a simple click with laptop/phone plugged into my amp, I sometimes forget how different the world is to access new music these days...John Peel helped me discover lots of records that I could identify with at various stages in my life - I'm really happy that his recordings are in the digital world now Very Happy

Yeah, I hear ya on the way the digital world has changed how we find/access music; things are REALLY different, access is no longer a stumbling block, no matter what you're into.

I never heard Peel's shows as a kid, what with being Canadian and all, but I wish I could have. I was introduced to Peel through bootleg tapes and CDs in the mid to late 90s, of various post-punk, grunge, alternative, etc. bands that I was already into... it was always a treat finding a "Peel Sessions" recording, they were always superb renditions of familiar material with a new angle, or all new material I'd never heard from an artist before. Unfortunately, Peel didn't really help me find new artists, as, to know about a Peel session over here, you generally had to already know about the band, then try and find the Peel recordings.

I envy your BBC access Wink

Ah, thats such a different perspective on Peels contribution to your world, I was just lucky to be born in a place within radio transmission distance I guess ...on MW first, then wow! the clarity of FM!
Radio and record shops were the main music media for me back then, I've even hummed/sang stuff I'd heard on short wave French Radio late at night and then got hold of the track at a record shop eventually!

...Peels sessions were definitely unique though, much more honest than the mainstream media world he worked in, I think you can sense it from the artists as well.

just clicked the Soundcloud link to check it out but it says This set is empty.

*Edit - The web police have taken it down, guess the BBC want all the rights and royalties for his shows.
