Drumming? Why not?!?

I've been a bass player since about 1995 or 1996 when I bought a friend's used Profile Precision bass copy, with a 15W solid state amp, gig bag and 10' cable for $160. I've also dabbled a bit in guitar and even less in other instruments. Something I haven't had much opportunity to play around with is drums... and I've kinda wanted to for years. Though I've been playing for about half my life, I'm not much of a musician, but I do enjoy playing, which is the main thing in my mind (I'd be depressed otherwise!) Wink That said, despite playing bass, I don't have a super good sense of rhythm. I mean, I get by and play steadily enough and can create a decent enough bassline, but, when I'm trying to remember how to play a song that I'm just developing I can remember the melody (i.e. note order), but not necessarily the rhythm (pattern)... which is a very important aspect of what a song actually sounds like.

Despite my rhythmic shortcomings, I'm going to teach myself drums. My friend acquired a free drum kit last month, and we set it up in my house. I've since called in a favour to fill in a missing (to me) integral piece (a ride cymbal) to fill out the kit (5 piece), but I haven't had time to play, as I've been busy wrapping up my MSc. Now with my defense out of the way, I can spend some time on fun things (especially since my last employment contract ended 2 December).

I understand some rudiments, but am really quite poor... It's mildly surprising how difficult it is to develop independence of motion in all four limbs. I'm trying to start with simple, but interesting beats, going through my mp3s and listening to the drum patterns... it's almost unfortunate that most of what I listen to doesn't have straight forward 1-3 4/4 beats, but incorporates either different time signatures or more complex beat patterns in 4/4 time. I joked with my wife that by January I'd be playing Xanadu or Cygnus X-1, but those are rather long term goals Razz In the meantime, I'd settle for a little Just Like Heaven (the Cure), leading into some Ice Age (Joy Division) and Blue & Green (Down with the Butterfly).

Maybe I should just aim for keeping steady time for now Wink

Nice sets of drums, ankhanu. Time to drive the wife crazy! laugh I started out with drums. Moved on to guitars then found my joy in keyboards.

I also would live to get into keys. I've had my heart set on a Roland Juno-Stage and dream of a MiniMoog Voyager... bit they're so expensive!

How'd your friend get his hands on a free set? And a Yamaha no less? Pretty cool.

Good luck with your drumming.

The set was his ex-girlfriend's little brother's. Their mother wanted it gone, and he played it more than the owner did, so they gave it to him. Since he didn't have space at his current place with his current girlfriend, the kit came to live here Smile

We need to reskin the kit, and it could really use some better hardware (throne and hi-hat stand specifically), but it's definitely good enough to learn on! The cymbals are a bit dark for my taste, but getting new Paiste or Zildjains to replace the Sabians that are there would be pretty expensive.

Agreed with Standready. Time to drive the wife crazy. At least keyboards come with ear phones. But if one wants a nice work out, drums would be good for getting fit too. Very Happy

@deanhills: At least most electronic keyboards come with headphone connections. I can't say that for my piano.
@ankhanu: I still have a set of Pearl Concave drums in storage at the studio. They have the sweetest sound. Friend of mine gave them to me when Pearl gave him a new set. Endorsement contracts are nice. Wink

Ah... what I'd do to have some musician friends with endorsement deals. When your friend gets a new Pearl set, make sure to fly your old set over here in the Phils. lol
