#FriHost - FriHost IRC channel

I wrote this up a bit ago, but I'm not sure it ever got posted, so, here we go...

Hey everyone.
A lot of you are unaware that Fri has an IRC chat presence, and the channel's been a bit quiet as of late… so I'm giving you all a reminder or introduction!

For those who don't know it, IRC is one of the older internet chat protocols; users connect to an IRC network and can join channels (social/group chat areas) and have private chats with specific users. It is, by far, the best group chat method out there, no IM service has quite managed to do group chat right, but it's ok, 'cause IRC had been doing it for years before IMs became common.

#FriHost is active on the DALnet netork (server The channel is here for chat on pretty much anything Fri related, nothing at all, and tech support for your various projects. The same basic rules apply to #Frihost as apply to the Frihost forums!

There are many options for IRC clients, there's certainly one to suit your needs. Below are some client options for each of the major OSes, and some browser-based options you can use on any computer with a web-browser.
.: mIRC
.: LeafChat

.: Colloquy
.: X-Chat Aqua

.: X-Chat (installed by default in many distros)
.: Zircon
.: List of various Linux IRC clients

.: Dalnet's web chat
.: List of Java Applet IRC services
.: If you use Opera, or have installed Chatzilla on Firefox, just click here: irc://

Drop by, say hello… if no one responds right away, stick around and come back, you'll be sure to catch someone, and the more people around, the more likely there'll be a chat!!

I'm, well, chagrined that I hadn't included the basic connection information in the post! Silly oversight. Thanks for rectifying it Ghost Rider.

No worries Very Happy

I was once new to IRC. It took me a good while to figure out how to use the damn thing. However being such a large fan of Frihost I forced myself to figure it out. Otherwise, I would have easily given up.

I just learned of HydraIRC, which looks to be a decent Windows client, and doesn't require the same sort of registration that mIRC does:

Nice I'm going to have to check this out when I get back home.

I've had Mirc for well over a year. Every time I sign in they keep bugging me about registering/buying the actual program.

Have you tested it yourself? I like the simpleness of Mirc. I've tried things like NNS but it feels heavy and inflated.

I haven't tested it. I'm a Mac user, and when on Windows, I registered my copy of mIRC around 2002-2003, so it works without any interruption.

I haven't even had the chance to test it out yet I've been so busy. Even now I'm posting from my cell phone before I head to bed.

But I'm going to try and get around to testing it out tomorrow. It just depends on how busy I am at work. But when I test it out I'll be sure to let you know how it works on he PC.

After looking at the site and seeing the screen shots, it looks like it's a very old program so I decided not to even download it.

I suppose I will just stick with mIRC.
