Hello all.

Disclaimer

Firstly: I have read the posting rules for the suggestion forum - many times - and I know I'm not really sposed to make the suggestion. But please keep reading anyway, and then make you decision.

Concept

The frihost starting page (www.frihost.com) looks awful. The design looks ten years old. Whereas I respect Bondings loads, he is no web3.0 webdesigner. This place needs a makeover.

Luckily there are many GOOD designers on frihost - in all humbleness, I consider myself one of them.

Lets redesign frihost!

With lots of advice from more than 120 posts in this topic I have produced THIS. <<<< CLICK

Ideas

I've worked on some artwork for the front page - this is the most "pressing" issue, as this is what new potential users/members see first, and what should "lure" them in. I have also designed a frihost logo.

What I would really like to see is some new Emoticons. Anyone who has ever seen any of my posts knows that I also end with "-Nick :face: :face: :face:" and it is really limited. I have seen some other forums like vBullitan that have tons of different emotes. It would be really simple to do and I am pretty sure that phpBB 2 has a feature that lets you add custom emotes. I would be up for making them too.

Is it possible to get servlets or JSP support?

The reason I ask is because servlets and jsp run in a java context and so are able to be well jail'd off from other parts of your server that you would otherwise want to keep protected.

I do all of my dynamic programming at work using JSP / servlets.

I think Bonders (or some guy) should increase the disk space to 3000 MB or more so that Frihost can compete with 3000MB. I first arrived in Frihost through ClickHereFree. Well, Frihost was third, 3000MB had 8 times more disk space than Frihost. The only reason I chose Frihost is that I wanted to remain anonymous. Now that got your attention, it's not quite that simple, please read my idea!

The ads were removed from this site for members a long time ago and there was a thread about it which basically established the income received is no longer required to run this host. Guest's take care of that enough. (Feel free to correct me on this one if I'm wrong.)

I'm always logged in, I never see ads on Frihost, therefore

I contribute nothing towards running this host

. So that makes me ask, why do I need to post at all?

I know this contradicts the community aspect of Frihost but, in a pure economic sense the model Frihost currently has would be viable without any posting requirement to maintain an account. Since the ad clicks are not at all dependent on hosted members' posting, why do hosted members' have to post, and maintain points?

Now, I see absolutely no problems with this idea on the basis that a few measures are taken. Firstly, most users join and then never get hosting as you can tell by the massive amount of members who have never even posted. To be even more through 25,182 members don't even have the 5 posts required to get a hosting account to start with (thats 67.5% of the 37,298 users we have at this point in time). So a lot of the users aren't hosted members anyway, most people make some posts, click some ads etc. and don't cost Frihost anything and Frihost effectively makes a profit off them.

Obviously if there was no posting requirement the forum would stagnate and traffic of users who aren't logged in with decrease a small amount. However, I would suggest

this forum would remain active and fresh even without forced posting, meaning the income derived from posting would continue.

I'd also say the

quality of posts would also greatly increase

because to be quite frank, most posts are rubbish. ...

I have noticed many, many, many different politcal-type dicussing that are occuring in the General Chat forum. The General Chat forum is designed for topics that don't fit anywhere else, but politics is owning it. I think adding a Political Forum would be a good idea because then if someone is really interested in politics, they would be able to just look up all the topics in one section.

It may also be a good idea to just add a whole new politics category. One for general politics, one for say, North American politics, European politics, etc. And mayber even forums for current political happenings. I know a lot of Frihosters are United Statians (see my blog post http://www.frihost.com/users/polly-gone/blog/vp-80123.html) and there is a ton of hype about the 2008 elections. There could be a forum created just on the 2008 election, then removed in mid-2009 once the new president has been in office awhile and all of the hype has died down.

Just a suggestion, but I think it is actually a very good one, but that's just my ego-filled opinion of myself.

Hi,

I'm a regular poster on the Marketplace forum and I'd like to suggest something that would be really usefull for user like me.

I think the Marketplace should be reserved to frihosters who would have atleast 30 posts. I am suggesting this because since about 1 month, we are invaded by 5 posts users who think they are the king of the world and order us to make their requests. That's why I think you should block the Marketplace forum to user who have not more than 30 posts.

Anyways, I don't think the Marketplace is made for new members since they have found (most of them) the frihost forum by trying to get a free hosting service. Also, why would you want to go buy or offer something when you have about 20 Frih$?

It would be fun if the regular frihosters who usualy post on the Marketplace could give their opinion.

It is quite a new experience for me to have to earn points for receiving free Website space. So once I have done all the hard work according to the rules and regulations, expected some form of feedback within a couple of days, or in lieu of that, perhaps right on top of the Forum Index a special section that deals with Website applications and current status of processing. I actually had to dig around in the forum for information on this and the tone in the reply to the enquiry that had been posted by someone had been "please do not bug us you are wasting precious processing time" (refer: http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-8851.html).

Remember that new applicants rarely have insights about Frihost's workings or the fact that the applications are being processed by volunteers. Perhaps there can be a backgrounder on this by way of adding a question to the FAQs page?

The suggestion is to provide more transparent information on the status of processing of applications by posting simple periodic notifications right on top of the Index of the Forum. Since this is a quid pro quo arrangement maybe timely feedback would be the courteous thing to do, as well as a practical way of avoiding enquiries.

Just a quick request; might it be possible at some point in the future to have a VCS other than CVS installed on Frihost? Any would really be fine (Hg, git, svn, bzr, mtn) in order of preference and probably ease of install too). Now you can only choose for:

MyISAM (standard)
MERGE
HEAP
MEMORY
ISAM

Why ?
Because you can't use things like foreign keys and some other keys.

I think there should be an option to "suspend" a hosting account, in which the site doesn't work when visited the admin panel cannot be accessed, and not points are taken off for the user. I don't know about other people but right now I am only developing my website and sometimes I can't work on it for a long time, so I don't need it to be "up", but all the databases and files are in the hosting, so to ask to remove the account and apply for it again is wasting a lot of time. The suspend option should be something like a link that we as users can easily switch on and off, without having to wait for a Frihost admin to do it. What do you think?

Dear admins!

I have spent days pulling my hair out, trying to find a decent wiki or cms that properly deals with LaTeX[0] (it's not just maths fonts, people...). My search came to an end wih ikiwiki[1], but it's literally the only one I could find. It doesn't have any dependencies server 1 doesn't have --- it basically just uses perl. I ask if could be installed globally more for convenience than anything else.

Every question that gets asked about the front page is shot down with "wait for the redesign" (coming out at the same time as Duke Nukem Forever, as I understand). There are some things that

, though. Doing so will take 10 minutes but will help tide people over and reducethe pressure on the redesign:

The list of features is out-dated
"Not Just Another Blog" is closed/inactive. Linking to an inactive site on the front page looks a bit bad for Frihost
The default text size is too large on linux, and makes the page look
really
scrappy.

This is just a little whimsical idea I had, but perhaps it has merit. I see that (with a few exceptions) most posts that are quoted are of the very best quality, either being very helpful, very informative, very controversial (making the topic more active), or very funny. The only exception to quoted posts being great posts is when a post is quoted just to point out how awful it is, which only happens rarely.

So, perhaps the points/frih$ system could use the number of times a post is quoted as a criteria for determining how good a post it was, and then reward the poster accordingly.

Alright. Suggestion it is, but i will ramble so please correct in any shape or form!

since this site has been around, i notice theres alot of dropies (word i use for single time users or people who are fussy and can't wait to be looked at, my first time applying for hosting was like 75posts and a week in, waited something like two weeks to get turned down bu second time around i came back with like 140 and waited less then a week and was accepted)

Alright there will be alot of

users who actually participate in this community and i think what would be fun if those who do have a host on here, such as me, but i think 250mb is alot of room for a one gig bandwith.

instead, why not create a whole site just like donating our share (lets say 50mbs each or ^ ) and either create a entire project up to a cause (Aids(not my type of java though), breast cancer, red cross, the group that wants human rights and many more) and like host a site to help them?

like heres my mathematical design of evil genius that possible cannot go wrong

one hundred uses donate 50mbs each, some volunteers code it etc and make a pretty design or a sierous topic. we post out some kind of blog or somewhat of the idea. and help spread there message

im out of ideas but there has to be someone out there who has a good thought.

why do this?
help others, donating, charity and deep down, it's just as good as money i think.

also, create some kind of way to link the site to there donation collection?

I'd say do something with the forum it looks kind of dull bit more colour and maybe a arcade bit were you can play flash games while waiting for your friends to come online or something like that. I think you should have like a download section on the forum for users to download certain files but they would have to atleast have about 200 posts before being able to download, maybe more posts its to stop people just coming on to downloading what they need then never to be seen again.

As what i have read, after being hosted, your points will be deducted 1 point each day. If it is greater than 45, lets say 50, it will undergo reset to 45 again. Logically, if your 45 points all you need is to login everday and post some post worthing 1 point to make it reset again to 45. To make a better system in measuring activity, i suggest that we have boundaries...

For

45 points to 70 - reset to 45
70 points ton 95 - reset to 70

and so on.....

in this way, we can measure the real active ones...

Suggestions : Security topic suggestion

I have a suggestion... it would be great if you guys would create a forum dedicated to computer security... I would even be willing to moderate it and post new security threats and news into this forum.... this is a growing problem as the computer age progresses and will only get worse in the years to come... we need people to be aware of vulnerabilities and issues.... let me know what you guys think.....
