A global warming cure?

Earth : A global warming cure?

I just had the most wonderful idea for a cure to global warming!
Microorganisms!
A small, airborne cell that gets its energy from photosynthesis, lives high up in the atmosphere, and uses airborne pollutants for food!
Set some of these loose high up, and let them multiply. They will reduce pollution, reduce CO2, produce oxygen, and if they multiply enough, have a small, but (over time) significant sun-blocking effect.

Stats : 46 Replies

Earth : how dinosaurs disappared from the world?

Dinosaurs disappeared million years ago and some said due to a meteorite (comet) or climate change.

I would go for due to climate change.

What is your opinion?

Stats : 115 Replies
Are they really becoming much more frequent lately, or is it just a result of better monitoring catching quakes that would have been unnoticed in the past?

If it is a real trend, what could possibly cause it?

Stats : 3 Replies

Global Warming Proof (Secrets Unveiled)

Earth : Global Warming Proof (Secrets Unveiled)

Quote:

Graphic images that reveal the devastating impact of global warming in the Arctic have been released by the US military. The photographs, taken by spy satellites over the past decade, confirm that in recent years vast areas in high latitudes have lost their ice cover in summer months.

The pictures, kept secret by Washington during the presidency of George W Bush, were declassified by the White House last week.

Earth : The moon moving too close to the Earth?....

Okay, I will say I have no clue what the hell this is, or what its called. I heard that when the moon gets to close to the Earth, the Earth will start "Acting Up".Huge waves would be come common, Winter could last for years, and Electronic devices will be disturbed? I don't really know what this is all about, but I would like someone to explain this for me? Will this even ever happen? And is there a book or Movie about this?(By the way, I'm sorry if this has been talked about already, but I really would like to learn about this.

Stats : 10 Replies

Earth : Google Earth

Have any of you seen the new features of Google Earth? Pretty cool - if you ask me.

You can:

- See ocean terrain imagery from the world's most advanced sub
- Be among the first human entities to explore the deep sea
- Use a toggle switch to view change in imagery over time

http://earth.google.com

The only issue for me is the 3D ocean. I have trouble diving into the water to see underneath. Anyone have tips?

Thanks,
Warning about copy-paste

Earth : Warning about copy-paste

I've noticed quite a few 'copy-paste' postings appearing in the science forums. This won't do at all. Simply copying a chunk of text from another site and posting it here as your own is not within the TOS. Use quote tags, acknowledge the site the material comes from, and add something of your own. Otherwise I will simply delete any such posting and issue a warning to repeat offenders.

If you don't know how to quote third-party material properly:

enclose
QUOTE
in square brackets at the start of the copied passage
enclose
/QUOTE
in square brackets at the end of the copied passage

Be sure to add your source as an http reference at the end of the posting or passage.

Here is how it should look (thanks to James007 for the visual aid).

Earth : Water Shortage

The monsoons this year although came earlier for relief but could not sustain.

So far it has rained scanty in all western ghats and now there are declarations from the Municipal Corporation that the water storage in lakes and other reservoirs is to sustain for 100 - 150 days.

This is very panic situation and already BMC (Bombay Municipal Corporation) has started the water cut off of 15%. So the water will come alternate days and soon thrice a week.

Now every one is dependent on rain god. They say only if it rains very heavy for about 10-15 days the situation can be overcome.

Dear nature, please do not delay us to please... rain heavily....

Stats : 15 Replies

Universal mandatory birth control.

Earth : Universal mandatory birth control.

So, I'm thinking: the root cause behind nearly all our environmental problems, from global warming to overfishing is simply human overpopulation. Overpopulation also makes the spread of disease faster and more thorough, and it's a large contributing factor to starvation and lack of drinkable water.

This overpopulation MUST eventually decrease the population back to a sustainable amount, one way or another.

If we do nothing, it will do this by causing billions of deaths.

But, there is another option. If we could instate birth control, and force each pair of parents to produce only 1 birth (and then when the population is sustainable again 2 births each), then we could reduce the population
without
the billions of deaths. This birth control policy must be universal (applied to everyone in all countries) and mandatory (nobody can opt out) in order to work.

Notice I said limit births, not children. I'm counting on the occurrence of twins and triplets (which count as only 1 birth) to balance out children who die before reproducing. Also, I'm counting on couples who decide not to have children to balance out those who disobey the rule.

Since we do have the problem that children are not always had by couples, I'd say we'd have to limit the pregnancies of each woman, not each couple. (So that single mothers and re-marrying couples don't mess up the system.) The rule would not be retroactive: women would be able to give birth one more time after the rule went into effect, no matter how many times they had before.

So, institute a worldwide ban on a woman giving birth more than once (having twins counts as one birth). Keep that in effect until the world population drops to, say, 3.5 billion. At that point, raise the limit to 2 times per woman, which should hold the population at a more or less steady number.
Would it work? Is it needed? ...

Stats : 25 Replies

21 December 2012, End of the world?

Earth : 21 December 2012, End of the world?

Quote:

One of the time periods of the Long Count of the Maya is the baktun, which lasts 144,000 days. In some texts of the Maya a new period of the Long Count is said to begin after 13 baktuns (exactly 1,872,000 days). Such a new period in the Long Count of the Maya will probably begin on 21 December 2012, when the Long Count returns to 0.0.0.0.0 (see the Historical Calendar Page), and some people expect to see special things in the sky or on Earth then that would not otherwise be expected.

The interest for 21 December 2012 seems to have been spurred by publications by John Major Jenkins, who (if I understand correctly) is of the opinion that the Maya designed their Long Count in order that the coming special date 0.0.0.0.0 corresponds to a southern solstice (when the winter begins in the northern hemisphere) when the Sun stands in the Milky Way in the sky. Mr. Jenkins reached this opinion based on extensive research of Maya texts and other traces.

As far as I know, no text by the Maya has been found in which they explain (unambiguously) how they chose the day on which their Long Count should start (or on which the special date of 0.0.0.0.0 should return), so we cannot be sure why the Maya designed their calendar in that way. We can form opinions about this, based on other knowledge we have of the Maya culture and of other calendars, and depending on how much weight we assign to each fact and each opinion. Different people can form different opinions about this.

I see everyday something about 2012... ...

Stats : 53 Replies

Earth : what is the largest port on the world

The Port of Shanghai, located in the vicinity of Shanghai, comprises a deep-sea port and a river port. In 2006, with a total of 537 million tons of cargo transported, it became the world's busiest port by cargo tonnage for the first time.

The Port of Shanghai faces the East China Sea to the east, and Hangzhou Bay to the south. It includes the heads of the Yangtze River, Huangpu River (which enters the Yangtze River), and Qiantang River.

Stats : 14 Replies

The Global Warming Scam

Earth : The Global Warming Scam

It is good to see that scientific views on this are changing...there is no credible evidence to support the global warming theory.

Many organisations and people have profited by the global warming theories - in fact there is an entire world industry which has grown around it.

Remember the panic over the supposed Y2K bug? A huge inustry was built around that too, millions of dollars of profit made - again on ridiculous and unfounded theories...

Al Gore is certainly profitting from it all - not to mention carbon footprints???? All that private jet travel?????

Ridiculous!

Take care and all the best

Fossil Energy

Earth : Fossil Energy

Oil investments are going to be on every investors mind, in coming years. All thanks to the rising oil prices and its shrinking supply. Investing in Oil has always been a wise thing to do. It is calculated that oil and energy investment offers a high potential for returns, upwards of 650%, or even greater showing no limitations. Infact, the investors can expect to see returns as soon as 60 days of a well hitting, a rapid pace for an investment offering such high projected returns.

Fossil fuels are the key sources of energy from long periods of time and still remain so. Because of this, oil and energy investments have performed extraordinarily well in the past few years and can be expected to continue doing so in an upward trend.

Today the oil industry is stronger as compared to the past 150 years. This is reinforced by the fact that the natural gas market is booming along with the growing global demand for energy. The supply for oil and gas is shrinking. As such the market presents an invigorating and secure opportunity for investors. ...

Stats : 2 Replies

Renewable energy at community level

Earth : Renewable energy at community level

Community based waste recycler in The Gambia, West Africa, seeks short term assistance.

Established in 2001, the Paper Recycling Skills Project (PRSP) has been involved in recycling paper into value added craft items and donating any net profits to assist in the education sector. As our products – craft paper, note books, albums, cards etc. – are aimed at the volatile and seasonal tourism market our income potential is limited and extremely seasonal. However, we are totally self supporting on a day-to-day basis and we have been able to donate over 45,000 exercise books free to needy students over the years and conduct countless workshops in paper making and environmental awareness building.

I moved to The Gambia in November 2003 and joined the Association of Small Scale Enterprises in Tourism (ASSET) in March 2004. Due to a continued delay in my own business activities I became a virtual full time volunteer. I acted as Chair of the Product Development & Marketing committee, helped to co-ordinate the member's trade fairs for 3 years and was elected as treasurer from March 2006 to June 2007.

I joined PRSP as a volunteer in mid 2004 and in February 2006 was elected as a board member, assisting the charity in business development and financial management. In March 2007 I was charged with the task of exploring funding possibilities to establish the first Craft Village in The Gambia as acting General Manager and project developer.

Since November 2007 I have researched and developed a number of additional and complimentary projects based on PRSP's core activities – recycling, environmental care and assisting the education sector. All my desk and field based research activities have been self financed and we have now 3 separate project proposals ready for funding and implementation.

1.	Expansion of community based waste recycling and introducing compressed bio-fuel briquettes.
2.	Fuel efficient stoves research and pilot demonstration project.
3.	Building capacity on environmental awareness through children to their families using education with the use of literature, books and media.
All 3 proposals can be found here in PDF format: http://www.hedon.info/1329/news.htm

In April 2009 we were awarded a small grant of ca. US$ 3,700.00 by the British High Commission under their local Bilateral Programme Budget funding. This grant will give us access to secure water for our compound and a basic range of equipment to start manufacturing our compressed bio-fuel briquettes. ...

Stats : 1 Post

Heat-tolerant Coral Reefs Discovered: May Survive Global War

Earth : Heat-tolerant Coral Reefs Discovered: May Survive Global War

Experts say that more than half of the world's coral reefs could disappear in the next 50 years, in large part because of higher ocean temperatures caused by climate change. But now Stanford University scientists have found evidence that some coral reefs are adapting and may actually survive global warming.
"Corals are certainly threatened by environmental change, but this research has really sparked the notion that corals may be tougher than we thought," said Stephen Palumbi, a professor of biology and a senior fellow at Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment.

Palumbi and his Stanford colleagues began studying the resiliency of coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean in 2006 with the support of a Woods Institute Environmental Venture Project grant. The project has expanded and is now being funded by Conservation International and the Bio-X program at Stanford.

"The most exciting thing was discovering live, healthy corals on reefs already as hot as the ocean is likely to get 100 years from now," said Palumbi, director of Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station.this is how they survive global war...
Has global warming.....cooled?

Earth : Has global warming.....cooled?

Global warming might not the so hot after all, if you believe Dr. Lindzen, a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at MIT. Follow this link to his graph of global mean surface temperatures:

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/03/11/a-note-from-richard-lindzen-on-statistically-significant-warming/

Look at the last five years, global warming has slowed to a crawl at best. The fuzzy areas are the uncertainties. Notice that upper limit of 1995 is the same at the lower limit of 2008. This indicates that the temperature differences are either within or very close the the amount of uncertainty in the measurements.

Stats : 19 Replies

Global Warming article - critique and pointers

Earth : Global Warming article - critique and pointers

I'm writing an article about global warming to submit on another site, and I'd like some opinions about it. Did I make my point? was my point clear enough? Did I ramble too much? Are there any flaws in my reasoning?
I haven't written anything quite like this since college and I'm a little rusty. Please be honest... I can't make it better unless I know what's wrong with it.

I have to make my point in under 1500 words, and this is pushing the limit, so if I need more explanation somewhere I'll have to decide what to cut out.

Here it is:

Some Facts About Global Warming

Last night I was flipping through radio channels and I paused to hear a political pundit going on about how there is no global warming, and that it's all a lie to keep us afraid and to make money for the Liberal Green Machine. His sole piece of evidence for his claim was that it snowed in New Orleans. I nearly fell out of my seat. Here is a well known radio personality, formerly a politician and an FBI agent, presumably an intelligent person, and he's spreading this idea based on a single point of data that shows an abysmal lack of understanding of the scientific process in general and the phenomenon of climate change in particular.

I had thought that the debate over the existence of Global Warming had been decided. ...

Stats : 30 Replies

Ocean wave speed

Earth : Ocean wave speed

A simple question...

Do all ocean waves (and most other waves in water) travel at the same speed? Or does the speed change?

Earth : Environmental Problem

This is a very serious problem.
It's called Global Warming.

Anyways, I think that nitrogen powered cars should be released in the world. People could pack cool features into these cars that would make em switch over. This way, we could fight it.
Humans and Future Climate Change

Earth : Humans and Future Climate Change

With the current global warming trend being a hot topic these days, a hypothetical question came to my mind that prompted me to post my first survey. “How do you think humans will react to the next global cooling period or even Ice Age?”

Ocean front property will become inland property. Hotels that once looked down upon beaches will look down upon land. People and entire towns will be forced to migrate south as advancing glaciers scour the land and destroy the homes they and their forefathers knew for centuries. Ecosystems will change dramatically. Habitats will be destroyed. Animals will be forced to migrate as climates change. Fauna will be altered. Plants that once thrived in northern latitudes will die off and/or become more common in southern latitudes. Human death tolls from cold weather will increase greatly. ...

Stats : 16 Replies

Why is the sea salty?

Earth : Why is the sea salty?

Okay this is the question and I don't know the answer? The text books tell me that it's part of the precipitation cycle - rain fails - gets washed into the water and carries minerals? Is this so? Another explanation is the constant rising and falling of the water in the sea - through heating and cooling - which has no place to go and therefore builds up concentrations of minerals such as salt.

My hypothesis or guess - and please you are invited to throw stones at this!

First: there is a word issue - of the top of my head I don't know a "Sea" which is not salty (if you do I'd like to know- equally does anyone know a lake which is salty?) therefore all seas are salty anyway and doesn't matter about the processes.
Second: Bodies of water operate differently when they have varying amounts in, including the type and amount of life it can support- a puddle is different from a pond, lake, sea etc.
Third: I think it is this amount of life in the water that creates the salt by decay and then the heating and cooling effect as mentioned above.

I'm sure somebody out there has some thoughts on the subject - that's thoughts! - not simply replying using stock answers from text books!

SO come on....throw some stones!

PS. what is the difference between a sea and an ocean?

Stats : 13 Replies

Earth : An earth without humans

A question which has been troubling me for some time. What would have happened to the earth had there been no humans? Would it remain all these years as it did before humans came; green and full of life?

Or would there have been another species of animal emerging as the "new" humans? Like...would there have been a bunch of highly intelligent cats sitting in our place and posting on forums on their versions of computer and internet?

Stats : 48 Replies

Earth : Winter Solstice

Looks as though we missed the Winter Solstice in the forum (or did I miss it)? Psychologically has always been a good day for me, especially in Vancouver, Canada where the nights in winter are REALLY long and it gets dark around 4:30 p.m. and when it is raining it just looks drizzley, grey and gloomy. So at least from 21 December I could visualize longer days coming. Winter days are waning

Here in the UAE we have relatively longer days, slightly cooler ones (ideal ones actually), sort of Goldilocks Weather. But for me the day is much shorter and I like to have them longer, so 21 December for me is also a kick-off day here for looking forward to longer days.

Stats : 3 Replies

LEED certification

Earth : LEED certification

Does anyone here have LEED certification experience and would you be willing to offer some advice?

Im living abroad in Hungary, and my office is working on one of the only two registered projects for LEED certification in the country.

Im not really involved in this project, but I would like to get my certification, and now Im seeing this as a really big opportunity because the program is not very big here.

I would like some tips about studying for the LEED accredidation test.

ALSO, if you are interested in architectural topics, I offered a suggestion in the SUGGESTIONS forum : http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-103983.html .

It needs a showing of interest to become a topic, so please show it if you think you would contribute or benefit.

Stats : 2 Replies

I can't recommend it enough.
I work for a biomass gasification energy company. If anyone has any questions about how green of a technology it is and why it's going to become more and more a common-knowledge piece of equipment, reply to this thread and I'll do my best to answer!

It´depends on the moon phases and the ammount of clouds.

So does anyone know a software or website from where i could find those data or if you just got a

name of that software.

Preferable i would like to use it in my N95 telephone, but any suggestions would be great.

Earth : Blankets over glaciers?

Dr. Jason Box has proposed that he can put blankets over glaciers that reflect sunlight and prevent melting. It seems a little far-fetched, but it might work. It also seems a little unpractical. How much money would it be to wrap of Greenland (and the rest of the arctic)? It's pretty interesting, though. Check out the full article.

What is the sink for Carbon Dioxide

Earth : What is the sink for Carbon Dioxide

Here is a new finding I have just come across
Researchers in China, studying the Gubatonggut Desert, have discovered that the desert land absorbs CO2. The research has been confirmed by studies of CO2 absorption in California's Mohave Desert. The oceans and the green forests at night are not the only absorbers of atmospheric CO2. Research over the past several years indicates that the absorption of CO2 into desert land is so great that, if extrapolated to the globe's arid lands as a whole, desert absorption could be pulling in fully half of all CO2 created by fossil fuel burning. The absorption would imply, I think, that most emitted CO2 from fossil fuels is not available to generate, indirectly, global warming; so there can be no one-to-one correlation between increased emission of CO2 from fossil fuel burning and atmospheric warming. (Richard Stone, "Have Desert Researchers Discovered A Hidden Loop in the Carbon Cycle?", Science 320, 12 June 2008, 1409.)
What do you all think I want to know can desserts be sinks for CO2 meaning can they absorb green house gases
your opinions are awaited

Stats : 14 Replies

Tidal Waves Harnessed as Green Energy

Earth : Tidal Waves Harnessed as Green Energy

Today, when the effects of global warming can be seen in all corners of the world, climate change has become a major concern for everyone, and the burning of fossil fuels such as coal to generate electricity is a major contributor to the environmental crisis. Coal-fired power generators produce vast amounts of carbon dioxide gas. In the US alone, 40 percent of total carbon emissions come from these plants. However, numerous green, sustainable power sources that do not harm the Earth are currently available. One such sustainable technology is “Tidal-kinetic power,” a process that some countries are already developing or using.

For example, the Finnish company AW-Energy recently developed a tidal-energy device called the WaveRoller, which relies on the energy of underwater sea waves to generate electricity. The inspiration for this green technology came in 1993 when the company's founder and professional diver Rauno Koivusaari was diving in the Baltic Sea at the site of a shipwreck. As he explored the ship, he was nearly hit by a door on the vessel that was opening and closing due to the movement of the underwater waves. Viewing this phenomenon led Mr. Koivusaari to wonder if energy produced by the force of underwater ocean waves could be harnessed, and his curiosity led to the creation of AW-Energy. ...

Stats : 3 Replies
