At what point can the US trillions of debt be called in?

Economics and Marketing : At what point can the US trillions of debt be called in?

A discussion started in a different thread in the Politics Forum:
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-110081-4.html
on at what point the US debts can be called in by China for example? Do you have any views on this? The part that I cannot understand is that there is no clear picture of what point those loans become due, or whether they would ever become due? So perhaps theoretically, the US citizens' indebtedness is not limited to the US, but it is making debtors of the whole world? The financial system is not only in a rut in the US, but the whole world is in a rut, and by the list of people that the US owe so much debt to, possibly those are the people who are living within their means, but they are catching up fast. What would happen if everyone owes everyone, what would the collateral be at that stage? Would that be the point where everything collapses?

deanhills wrote:

I've always wondered about this, and maybe you can comment on this, the US debt is owned by the rest of the world. China owns about 25% of that debt. If I were to owe someone that amount of debt, I would not be able to sleep at night, especially if their Government policies are in conflict of mine. ...

...

Stats : 24 Replies

Swindler's List - Munir Khan

Economics and Marketing : Swindler's List - Munir Khan

Quote:

The doors are locked and sealed. Three policemen guard the premises day and night. TV news channels have been streaming detailed reports of this multi-crore fraud everyday at primetime. The mastermind is on the run. Still, there is no let up in desperate patients queuing up at conman Munir Khan's Health Reactive clinic at Versova in Andheri.

Even today, at least 200 unsuspecting patients hailing from places as far as a small town in Bihar to Saudi Arabia, come to the clinic everyday enquiring about Khan and his magic potion, Body Revival - the one medicine that Khan claims can cure all diseases, ranging from simple itching to heart diseases and cancer.

We had to sell our jewellery to buy the expensive medicine. However, after having the medicine my conditioned not only worsened but I also developed skin disease - Anju Menda, victim
If ever there was an international contest on gullibility, Indians would beat the world hands down. Nothing else could explain the exponential rise of a middle-class economics graduate from Kota, Rajasthan, who until a few years ago was allegedly working as a compounder for an Ayurvedic doctor in Jogeshwari, solely on the shoulders of a 100 ml solution that primarily had nothing but honey and sugar syrup.

A multi-millionaire

Today, Khan is a multi-millionaire, with several properties in Mumbai and Rajasthan. He roams around in cars no less than Mercedes Benz and has three of them apart from other cars. Only last year, Khan declared an income that computed his tax to Rs 125 crore. He obviously didn't pay, following which there was an IT raid at his clinic and home. ...

...

Stats : 1 Post

Cash for clunkers!

Economics and Marketing : Cash for clunkers!

I think the cash for clunkers program in the US is great way to come out of the economic situation, for both businesses and individuals.
What cash for clunkers is - is that you exchange your old gas guzzling car for a new hybrid one, or even get money for it.
I'm not sure how much money was involved, but its still a good deal, to save on fuel, and also for companies like ford to sell their hybrid cars, so that the company doesn't go down!

Anybody choose to comment?

Stats : 14 Replies

Economics and Marketing : Can we really make money online?

I have heard a lot of myths especially from those emails especially from affiliate programs.
Google vs Microsoft

Economics and Marketing : Google vs Microsoft

I was reading something the other day in a marketing magazine where there tends to be a moving shift into consumers interest into business that have an ethical basis. It was saying that fast becoming some of the more common questions before "how much can you do it for?" are questions like: "is it environmentally friendly", "Is your business affiliated with any sort of charity". I have always felt that the way Microsoft has been developed has been one of "all is fair in business" by kicking down anybody who might want to share the spotlight. However the Google brand to me has always come across to me to being more ethical and cooperative with the broader community... I dont have much to back this up but by the general feeling of the bran I have gotten seeing it grow over the years.

Does anybody else have an opinion on this sort form of marketing (does it influence you) and how do you think these to companies stand up (from an ethical stand point at least)?

Stats : 58 Replies

Marketing Strategies

Economics and Marketing : Marketing Strategies

Which current marketing and promoting strategies are you currently pushing...

I am particularly for the BIGGER PICTURE Theory to which the top of the pyramid is the goal and you work backwards with the steps for marketing snowballing and creating buzz along the way... this theory and practice, depends on networking speed, keeping momentum and creating deadlines...

Are you a fan of this strategy? Do you have any tips or modifications for this particular strategy, or do you not like it?

Im just interested to know what YOU think

Stats : 10 Replies

An unusual (recession-proof) investment.

Economics and Marketing : An unusual (recession-proof) investment.

I've been looking for an investment that can weather
any
economic storm, and I think I may have finally found it.

Guns.

I know, I know, "what, guns, an investment?" It sounds like salesman talk, but it actually makes sense when you look at it.

Guns have been rising in value a lot lately, and the great thing is that
the worse things get, the more valuable the guns will be
. (The worse shape the world gets in, the more people who will want guns.) Nearly everything else would decrease in value if society collapses, but not this, a collapse would cause the gun prices to skyrocket. And if things don't get any worse, they'll still hold their value well, so I won't loose any money.

Another nice thing about them is that they are intrinsically useful. A gun can increase in value
and
be used at the same time. Things like gold, on the other hand, are useless until you sell them.

So, what do you think of my idea of firearms (and ammunition) as a rainy-day savings fund?

They certainly beat gold, which has actually been going down in value recently, and is useless while you have it.
They also beat a stash of cash, which is also useless until you spend it, and is very vulnerable to inflation.
A bank account has all the problems of cash,
and
it could be lost in a serious banking crisis.
An investment in stocks or bonds, domestic or international, could also easily loose value in an economic crash.

Stats : 24 Replies

Energy....

Economics and Marketing : Energy....

With the seemingly ever increasing fuel prices, what are people doing about this ?

It is possible to change providers, however most of them are putting up their prices... so there isn't much of a saving from one to the other....

Obviously we can cut down on the energy used in order to reduce the outgoings... but again... how much can we do...

- boiler insulation
- roof and cavity wall insulation

will help... but what about the other option...

Generating electricity... and ideally selling any excess to the energy companies...

As I understand it, in order to generate sufficient electricity I need to look into Photo Voltaic solar panels... as the regular panels don't generate enough... but there is also the option of wind turbines.

Does anyone out there have any experience in this ? And any idea on cost ?

I'd like to think that any initial outlay would be showing some sort of return (or at least a balance) within 5 or so years....

Thanks for any input,

Have you visited an Emergency Room (ER) for care?

Economics and Marketing : Have you visited an Emergency Room (ER) for care?

Hi--

I am interested in running a short poll as to what would motivate people to choose a different hospital for something like stitches.

A couple of years back I was in a triathlon, but went through a corner too fast and split my elbow open. It just split the skin, but it was pretty bad, so I was driven to a hospital to get some stitches.

Recently, I was wondering why I went to the hospital I went to. Since I had insurance, I just went to the closest big hospital, although there were a couple more in the area.

My question is this: "How much would you have to save to go to a hospital other than your usual one for a $200 stitches job?"

Thanks!

Tax Lien Certificates - How many Canadians purchase them?

Economics and Marketing : Tax Lien Certificates - How many Canadians purchase them?

I am working on a project (School). I am interested in knowing where I can find data (statistical) about how many Canadians purchase Tax Lien Certificates in the US.

I am not sure where to start. I tried Googling it and found many topics about tax lien certificates, but nothing about statistics such as how many Canadians purchase them in the US.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Stats : 1 Post
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Vangelakos' southwest Florida condominium has marble floors, a large pool overlooking a river and modern furnishings that speak of affluence and luxury. What they don't have in the 32-story building is a single neighbor.

Perfect example of how bad real estate can get during tough economic times. At first it may seem cool to have a 32-story building all to yourself... but it does get lonely pretty quickly. You would get lots of pranks and security problems though, as stated in the article.

Stats : 3 Replies

World Economy Status - Why is it so bad?

Economics and Marketing : World Economy Status - Why is it so bad?

The current recession around the world is impacting a lot of people. Many are losing jobs. The cause of this recession has been traced back to the status of the US economy in particular.

I came across this opinion piece in the New York Times website:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/24/opinion/24friedman.html?_r=1&ref=opinion

It opines that money is being invested to churn out management guys, those who are in the business of making money out of money, rather than in actual innovation. What is the opinion of fellow Frihosters? Do you all think that these money managing middlemen need to be gotten rid of? In the area of layoffs, do you think it is the innovating / implementing engineers who need to go, or is it the endless chain of money managing people who need to be booted out? These are questions which are not directly answered in the opinion piece linked above, but are ones which I am thinking out loud on. Inputs for discussion would be really great!

PS: I am no authority on economics, and haven't even done any basic course in it! My status is that of a layman, and my approach to the issue is the same. I guess people here have some sort of 'professional' / 'semi-professional' attitude to economics, and I would love to hear their voice on this issue. ...

Stats : 44 Replies

Economics and Marketing : What is a dollar (euro) bill worth to you?

What value do you attach to paper money notes or currency in general?

I don't only mean the buying power of a bill but the very essential quality of it. When you look at the coloured paper or coin what do you feel? What does it mean to you?

Interested to know where this goes.

Economics and Marketing : NFL Playoffs Fixed ?

How can so many playoff games be blowouts. Is it a coincidence or are they doing some point shaving or something. I think the league needs to take a closer look. Either that or the coaches need to be fired for poor performances. I also question some of the officiated. Phantom calls and flopping go hand and hand.

Stats : 2 Replies

Finland proves high taxes + socialism = happiness?

Economics and Marketing : Finland proves high taxes + socialism = happiness?

There's a lot of support for this formula, if you model it on northern Europe. Here is just one analysis from a pundit in the USA:

Quote:

Finland! Land of the world's no.-1 education and health care systems. You get what you pay for and Finland's 60-percent tax levy gets a lot. Almost no crime. Or the expensive prisons that are necessary for failing to fund excellent education and health care for the poor. Because properly educated and nurtured, the poor become middle class and middle class people generally don't commit crime.

Gallup just put out a study showing that citizens of countries with the highest tax rates are also the world's happiest people.
Honest truth. Folks in the Netherlands, Finland and Norway pay the world's highest tax tabs, but also rank as the least stressed, happiest, most contented humans. The Land of Liberty pays much less tax, but only lands at the No. 11 spot on the happiness scale. ...

...

Stats : 11 Replies
