My new truck! I got my chevy! (pics)

Vehicles and Transportation : My new truck! I got my chevy! (pics)

So, I finally got my chevy: a 04 avalanche with 53000 miles and some nice options on it.
4x4 of course, and some nice interior options to go with it.

This one won't see serious off-road use because of its size and its lack of rollover protection.
It will handle the snow and ice here just fine though.

Whaddya think?

Stats : 9 Replies

Costliest Car of the World

Vehicles and Transportation : Costliest Car of the World

1. Bugatti Veyron $1,700,000. This is by far the most expensive street legal car available on the market today. It is the fastest accelerating car reaching 0-60 in 2.6 seconds. It claims to be the fastest car with a top speed of 253 mph+. However, the title for the fastest car goes to the SSC Ultimate Aero which exceed 253 mph pushing this car to 2nd place for the fastest car.

2. Lamborghini Reventon $1,600,000. The most powerful and the most expensive Lamborghini ever built is the second on the list. It takes 3.3 seconds to reach 60 mph and it has a top speed of 211 mph. Its rarity (limited to 20) and slick design are the reasons why it is so expensive and costly to own.

3. ...

Stats : 2 Replies

GM's OnStar: Pulling the plug on Big Brother.

Vehicles and Transportation : GM's OnStar: Pulling the plug on Big Brother.

So, recently two facts came to my attention:

1: GM's OnStar system, which my truck has, can not only track your movements and speed, but also can remotely slow down or shut off the vehicle.
And
it could be used to listen in on any conversation inside the vehicle. (Even if you're not subscribed to the service.)

2: The government owns a large portion of GM.

I invite you to accuse me of paranoia, but his made me somewhat uneasy. So, I went in search of a solution. I decided that OnStar had to go.
After looking around online, I was able to find out where in my truck the module is located: behind the glove compartment's back-plate. Luckily, from underneath the dash, with my head on the passenger floorboard, I could see the module from below,
and
I could see where the antenna was plugged into the system. I wiggled my arm in behind the dash, and unscrewed the connector, disconnecting the antenna, and moving the cable off to the side.
(A lot of the truck's electronics run through this module (as if to discourage its removal), but removing the antenna just greatly reduces the signal strength, making the OnStar system always think that is it just out of signal range temporarily, so there are no side effects.)

Then, of course, I had to test it. I cranked up the truck, and tried to activate the OnStar system. I was very gratified to hear "sorry, but I cannot connect right now, please try again."
Now, it is impossible for anyone to track my truck's movements, or remotely disable it. (Which makes me feel a lot better.)

(So, in 98-06 suburbans, avalanches, and silverados (and GMC and Cadillac versions), the OnStar module can easily be disconnected from the antenna by reaching up through the dash from the passenger floorboard. ...

Stats : 5 Replies

Red pill / blue pill in a London tube

Vehicles and Transportation : Red pill / blue pill in a London tube

I had a dream last night ...

What if, instead of windows, some trams, metros and buses would have LCD screens?
You are in a tube, in underground, but on the window you can see images from other cities... as you would be in a Paris tram (or a Prague bus).
Images will be filmed from a bus/tram and aired in a NY tube (or Bucharest tube).

How you will feel? Confused?

[When these things will appear on the market, do not forget who had the idea. ]

Stats : 8 Replies

Vehicles and Transportation : 2006 Pontiac Pursuit/Cheverolet Cobalt

I find my self in need of a new car within a month and have started looking around for something new (to me). I'm on a budget so I'm basically looking at $10k and less. Many of the cars that I've come across in my price range are 2006 Pontiac Pursuits (a Canadian Pontiac version of the Chevy Cobalt). I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this car, and what your thoughts are?

I'm currently driving a 1999 VW Jetta TDI that's not going to pass it's safety inspection and will be pretty expensive to get up to code :/

Stats : 7 Replies

Vehicles and Transportation : Favorite Subway/Metro System?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious to any world-travellers out there who have experienced many Subways and Metros, which they believe to be their favorite Subway/Metro?

I've personally fond of New York, largely because of its size. I've heard good things about London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Budapest and Moscow.

Please offer us your favorites, any insights you might have and why they are your favorite.

Stats : 1 Post

Vehicles and Transportation : My first car

Last month, for my birthday, I recieved a 1988 pontiac 6000. I think it's not a bad car, but I'd like some opinions. It also failed the emissions test (because my grandpa didn't read the directions on the guaranteed emissions test pass kit) and the only thing it failed was the HC.

Who has a car like this, and any tips for a kid's first car?

Stats : 47 Replies

Flying Car

Vehicles and Transportation : Flying Car

"Terrafugia, a start-up created by Lemelson-MIT Student Prize winner Carl Dietrich and colleagues at MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, is aiming to show off what it calls the Transition "personal air vehicle," a vehicle resembling an SUV with retractable wings, to the EAA AirVenture Conference in Oshkosh, Wis., at the end of July.
The Transition is designed for 100- to 500-mile jumps. It will carry two people and luggage on a single tank of premium unleaded gas. It will also come with an electric calculator (to help fine-tune weight distribution), airbags, aerodynamic bumpers and of course a GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation unit.

The company hopes to eventually have the vehicle classified so that it can be piloted with a light sport aircraft license."

I think a flying car would be awesome. I would love to drive one.

Stats : 7 Replies

Vegetable Oil in diesel powered cars

Vehicles and Transportation : Vegetable Oil in diesel powered cars

I recently bought a car in which the previous owner had been using a mixture of vegetable oil and diesel. I have continued to do this and had no problems. I can buy vegetable oil at wholesale prices which saves a considerable amount on our extremely expensive (and highly taxed) UK diesel. The Car is a Ford Galaxy. Has anyone else had any experience with vegetable oil as fuel?

Stats : 22 Replies

Top Gear

Vehicles and Transportation : Top Gear

Hello,

I don't like cars, I don't drive, I don't have a license, I don't want a car at this point of my life.
I truly HATE the "gas guzzlers" guys and I hope that public transportation will help in the future NOT to buy a car.

Now, I have a question: What's wrong with the "Top Gear" guys? When my remote control stop on this kind of TV program, I watch.
I think is the third or fourth time in the last time when these guys are comparing the English cars with German cars. And ALL THE TIME they find better the English cars.
Today they compared a Vauxhall with BMW, Audi, Mercedes... and guess what? Vauxall worth it more!
They say that is better to buy a Vauxhall because is cheaper and do the same thing: drive.
And the only reason for BMW to be more expensive is because it have BMW logo on it.

What's wrong with these guys??

You compare BMW, Audi, Mercedes with Vauxhall and this Vauxhall beat them up!!!?
What the f... ??

You know, this name, Vauxhall, is not even recognized by the Firefox spelling!!!

Stats : 9 Replies

A trip to Whitby over the hills.

Vehicles and Transportation : A trip to Whitby over the hills.

....on todays spin out to Whitby.
5 of us left Wakey, one turned back after 5 miles (apparently hasn't regained radio contact with his frozen gonads yet!) & Joicey joined us on the A64 to make it 5 again.
Headed north past York & all roads seemed slippy, so it was a steady pace. 5 miles or so before Helmsley I stopped to take a pic & setting off again snapped a gear cable....Joicey replaced it from his kit (MUST get some spares of my own!) & we set off again, only for it to slip & fail again. I sent them on to meet up with others at Helmsley, but took longer than anticipated to fix it, so by the time I met the rest 45 mins or so had been lost.
The bulk of the pack decided on the direct route to Whitby, but I'd set my heart on the scenic route, so I set off over moors alone & found some stunning scootering terrain....up hill, down dale....exhilarating stuff indeed, and definitely a route to re-visit.
Sad thing was I missed the lads in Whitby, so rode home myself the 85 miles or so.
A fantastic day out, spoiled by the timing of the cable going slightly though.
Thanks to all for making the effort.

The only snap of all the Wakey contingent...Molibdimum's telling me he takes 2 sugars, I think.

We were in such remote areas that BT haven't noticed they've left a "proper" phone box in place instead of one of those poxy silver things....and HEY! the vandals haven't found it either!
A real taste of how things used to be.

Hutton-Le-Hole, N. Yorkshire - beautiful.

So many sheep...so little time.

Just about to ride off the edge of the earth !

Half way down...I'd to turn the scooter round as it kept falling forwards off the stand downhill ! Above Rosedale Abbey

High up on the moor, t'other side of Rosedale....only Landrovers, the odd car, and errmmm.....me for miles !

Down the other side after a long, slippery descent....I was relieved to see the ford was (almost) dry, as I'd have had to have retraced many miles had it not been. Footbridge too narrow for anything but feet.

Same place

Finally in Whitby....Dracula was hiding, as were my cohorts, in a cafe unbeknown to me!

So I rode north along the cliff-top road & enjoyed the sunshine over my picnic. Never got right down to my undies though.

Maybe they hid to avoid the leftover mince pies?

And finally, over the tops towards Pickering is the majestic Hole Of Horcum....can't beat Yorkshire.

Stats : 12 Replies

Vehicles and Transportation : Honda CBR 125

Hi =] I'm in a 2 months I am eligible to obtain my motorcycle Ls and I've decided to get myself a Honda CBR 125. I've heard it's a good beginner's bike so I just wanted to know if I'm physically able to ride it... I'm not the tallest, in fact I'm quite short roughly 166cm – 168cm, any thoughts? Oh and also I was curious how much would a 2007 model would be? I checked it out on a couple sites and it ranged from 3.5 - 4.2. I don't want to buy a brand new one, first bike after all.
How to winterize my jeep?

Vehicles and Transportation : How to winterize my jeep?

I'm a Florida raised boy, so I don't know anything about this, but I'm going to have to learn. This
November
I'm driving my jeep from either Mississippi or Florida all the way to South Dakota, where I hear that temperatures go sub-zero, though snow doesn't really start until the spring.

So, what should I do to make my jeep ready for very cold temperatures? I know I need to change the hot-temperature optimized oil out for stuff made for the cold, but do I need to exchange any other fluids? Add more antifreeze? Do something to windshield washer fluid? Would it be a good idea to get an engine block heater? I have the highest power rating battery that my jeep can use, so I shouldn't have to change that, I think, though I know that batteries give less power and need more power when starting very cold. Should I take any precautions against snow and road salt causing rust?

Are the tires I have now aggressive enough for snow, or do I need to get snow chains? (Keeping in mind that I might like to go off-road in the winter if possible.)

If I do need chains, what kind should I get (I hear that there are actually rope-based ones that are better), and when should I use them?

Are there any tricks to driving in snow or ice that I wouldn't have already learned by driving in sand and mud? I already know that it is actually fine to use four wheel drive
on
paved roads if there is any water, ice, or snow on the road. ...

Stats : 7 Replies
