Is time travel possible?

General Science : Is time travel possible?

There may be no other concept that captures the imagination more than the idea of time travel -- the ability to travel to any point in the past or future. What could be cooler? You could jump into your time machine to go back and see major events in history and talk to the people who were there! Who would you travel back to see? Julius Caesar? Leonardo da Vinci? Elvis? You could go back and meet yourself at an earlier age, go forward and see how you look in the future... It's these possibilities that have made time travel the subject of so many science fiction books and movies.

It turns out that, in some sense, we are all time travelers. As you sit at your desk, doing nothing more than clicking your mouse, time is traveling around you. ...

Stats : 17 Replies

Do you believe the evidence of your eyes?

General Science : Do you believe the evidence of your eyes?

I was recently talking to my students about how human beings are very bad at observing and remembering events, and, being 17-18 they didn't really believe me (I wouldn't at their age either - ahh, the certainty of youth )

Anyhoo, a friend emailed me a link to an optical illusion which he said was quite interesting and might make them think a bit deeper. He was right. Check this out....

Now, simple question - do you think that the squares A and B are the same colour?

I bet you don't. In fact I'm betting that nobody will accept that they are. I've already had people willing to bet BIG money that they are not and if I was so inclined I could have taken some serious money
(Even after it is demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt many people cannot accept it.)

OK - let's join the squares and see wot's wot......

Now - next time someone tells you that they are certain that such and such happened, because they saw it with their own eyes, you know what to tell them

Stats : 4 Replies

General Science : range of laser pen

Hi,

Most of us are familiar with laser pen (laser pointer) which work on 3 button cells.

Can you estimate the average distance the red beam can travel from earth to sky?

I think it can't pass out of the earth's atmosphere.

General Science : Is it possible to live forever?

Is it possible to live forever?

What does it mean to grow old and die? Can we overcome this process and hence forth live forever?
2012 and The IHC

General Science : 2012 and The IHC

Hello people

The other day I was watching T.V. and saw an ad for The IHC. It basically mentioned doomsday 2012, I thought it was an trailer for the 2012 movie coming out. I went to the site and to my surprise it seems they are taking the 2012 threat seriously.

What are your thoughts on this, are they just working off people's fear and trying to make a quick buck? Or is there actual science behind something happening in 2012?

This probably isnt the first topic in regards to the 2012 topic, but I thought it would be interesting to post about The IHC and discuss it a bit!

Start discussing!

Stats : 17 Replies

Immortal living being on our planet!

General Science : Immortal living being on our planet!

Quote:

This is a species of jellyfish called
Turritopsis Nutricula
, to which I shall call
Turrito
by practical issues. Turrito is a hydrozoans, or a marine animal from a few millimeters and almost transparent. It is the only living being that scientists believe has misled
death
.

The
Turritos
, when they reach their sexual maturity, their state to revert completely new puberty. It is as if you woke in the morning as a baby. Back almost to zero. Not just change their sexual characteristics, but which, for example, lose their tentacles and nearly 100 will have a few pairs renewed.

Most living beings are condemned to die in one way or another. But there is an animal(The Turrito) on this planet that is immortal, he can not die of old. And this does not mean that age is something very strange and fascinating: when it reaches a certain age,
rejuvenates.

It is the only known case of a metazoan animal able to completely revert to a stage of sexual immaturity, the stage of colony after having reached sexual maturity is a lonely stage. He achieves this through a process of trans-cellular.
Theoretically, this cycle can be repeated indefinitely, in setting up effective immortality.

Turrito
is not the only natural source of study to achieve immortality (or the closest thing to it):
the vegetable seeds
may remain in suspension for centuries and then animated revival of nowhere, a kind of Alamos who share the roots and DNA that can live at
least 80 thousand years
.

Not fantastic?

I hope you like it... ...

Stats : 21 Replies

General Science : DNA test at home

I've always thought that a DNA test is very complicated. Apparently not! I discovered a site on the internet called http://www.eaysdna.ie where you can order home a special kit for paternity tests. This kit has the appropriate tools for the person to take her own samples that will be sent to the laboratory for analysis. The results only take five days and they are 99.99% precise with an affordable price and a total confidentiality. I thought it was something worth sharing with all of you.

Stats : 6 Replies

Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity

General Science : Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity

Hi,

I'm working on a comparison between Particle Physics and Astrophysics but for that I need to know the basic similarities and differences between Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity.

So, is there a web site that gives a simplistic comparison between QM and GR? Even if you know of an advanced comparison, please do tell me.

If you don't know of a site but know of some comparisons, particularly differences, please could you tell me and I'll ask you to explain if I don't understand.

Thanks,
Drag force on a car

General Science : Drag force on a car

Hi all,

I was working on a project regarding the drag force experienced by automobiles. Now, I was wondering ... is there any way in which the drag force on a vehicle can be expressed in terms of the air pressure or bonnet pressure? If not, how do these two pressures (they are different right?) come into play as far as the drag force is concerned? Or is the drag force autonomous to them?

Another thing: how is the drag force related to the fuel consumption?

Thanks

Stats : 5 Replies

Why should we not re-heat some food?

General Science : Why should we not re-heat some food?

I had one of those ready-made curries the other day & in bold letters it stated "DO NOT REHEAT". Why not?

When I cook a curry, bolognese, casserole, etc I usually cook enough for 2 dinners so I re-heat the leftovers the next day. I've never had a problem with doing that. So why should some ready-made meals not be re-heated? Is it an advertising ploy to make us buy more or are there genuine health implications?

Stats : 5 Replies

Warning about copy-paste

General Science : Warning about copy-paste

I've noticed quite a few 'copy-paste' postings appearing in the science forums. This won't do at all. Simply copying a chunk of text from another site and posting it here as your own is not within the TOS. Use quote tags, acknowledge the site the material comes from, and add something of your own. Otherwise I will simply delete any such posting and issue a warning to repeat offenders.

If you don't know how to quote third-party material properly:

enclose
QUOTE
in square brackets at the start of the copied passage
enclose
/QUOTE
in square brackets at the end of the copied passage

Be sure to add your source as an http reference at the end of the posting or passage.

Here is how it should look (thanks to James007 for the visual aid).

I need to learn Multivariable Calculus and Vector Calculus ... and fast! But I am not very good with vector fields and stuff.

So, which web site would you recommend to learn from ?

I'm looking for the most basic explanations you can find.

Stats : 4 Replies

Accelerating an electron to the speed of light

General Science : Accelerating an electron to the speed of light

According to classical mechanics, I calculated that if an electron were to be accelerated through a potential difference of about 257 kV, it would breach the speed of light. Now, according to relativistic mechanics, this is obviously untrue. So, what are the mathematical corrections to be made whilst calculating the speed attained?

What I did was:

qV = (mv^2)/2 [Electrostatic potential energy = Kinetic energy]

How do I correct this using relativistic mechanics?

Stats : 4 Replies

New cell phone technology is created.....

General Science : New cell phone technology is created.....

U.S. engineers have created a technology that allows a person to write a note in the air with their cell phone and send the message to an e-mail address.

Duke University engineering researchers said their invention is designed for people who have their hands full of items -- briefcase, laptop, a coat or luggage -- who need to make a note, but don't want to stop and put down all of the items they're carrying.

The technology makes use of the accelerometers in cell phones -- devices that not only keep track of the phone's movements, but make it possible for display screens to rotate from landscape to portrait modes depending on how the phone is moved.

"By holding the phone like a pen, you can write short messages or draw simple diagrams in the air," computer engineering student said Sandip Agrawal, who, with Duke graduate student Ionut Constandache, developed the PhonePoint Pen.

"The accelerometer converts the gestures to images, which can be sent to any e-mail address for future reference," Constandache added. "The potential uses are practically limitless."

The prototype is expected to be available for download within the next few months.

Stats : 7 Replies
