programming Language to learn

Jobs and Learning : programming Language to learn

I want to start coding again. I haven't in over 10 years. I have some familiarity with C, C++ and some Visual Basic, SQL Server. I don't remember anything aprt from general principles of programming.

The objective of learning such a language is to put up a hobby website based around content and community and hopefully if things pick then turn it into an enterprise service.

Please suggest what web oriented language I should be learning. On my shortlist are:
PHP
Perl
Python

Partly for reasons of availability of development tools and to avoid the expense of expensive OS & software choices and the general open source movement, I have chosen to stay away from proprietary platforms like .NET and J2EE.

If you think this thought process is misguided, please do mention the same.

Cheers

Cinematography

Jobs and Learning : Cinematography

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there were any people on this forum who work as cinematographers or are aspiring cinematographers like myself. I've had nearly 4 years of experience working as grip, gaffer, camera operator, and cinematographer on quite a few student film productions, and I am nearing completion of my Bachelor's of Arts in Film & Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Upon graduating, I plan to find work as an intern for a 35mm camera rental house or for a lighting studio like Mole Richardson, and eventually working my way up the ranks to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a Director of Photography for narrative film productions.

Is there anybody out there interested in the same field as me? I'd love to meet some and discuss possible paths that lead to a career in the artistic realm that is cinematography.

Stats : 4 Replies

Choosing a College and Prestige

Jobs and Learning : Choosing a College and Prestige

So I'm a senior in high school and I am choosing a college for next year. I have been accepted to the University of Michigan college of engineering and Michigan State University (honors college). I have many factors to consider before picking a school, but I was talking to my friend and have a question. He feels that U of M is better because it is more selective and "prestigious" so you can get a better job and "better" education. I feel that the difference is negligible and MSU may even offer better education at their honors college because more classes are taught by professors and in the honors college you get more small-sized classes. My question is, how much does "prestige" weigh in job searches? It seems like it can help for some employers but others don't really care. Also, for anyone in Michigan who knows about these two schools, is there really a difference in the quality (comparing U of M to MSU honors)?

I still have a lot to think about before I decide but I want some opinions on this part. Thanks.

Stats : 9 Replies

I want to change my profession

Jobs and Learning : I want to change my profession

Hello all,

I am 31 and I feel that I can do more with my life. I have a good job, I am paid well, I have a girlfriend, I saw a dozen of countries... but I am not happy enough.
I think to change my profession - to follow an University and to change the way my life is going.
I like robotics, I have studies in informatics.

Two questions:

1. Can you recommend a good University in Robotics field? (I would like Germany but any other European country is ok)
2. Do you think that my age will be a problem?

Thanks!

Stats : 4 Replies

Age for games, movie's and other stuff?!?!?!?!?

Jobs and Learning : Age for games, movie's and other stuff?!?!?!?!?

Hi,
I know this is the wrong section.
We all know that games like call of duty are always 16 or 18 years or older.

So, I'm 14 and I went to a shop to buy GTA IV a few months ago. They said to me, you are not 18, so you cannot buy this! And I became very angry, because this was GTA IV for the ps3 and I just switched from PC-Gaming to PS3-Gaming and for the PS3 you cannot download games, so I thought, I'm gonna give my money to the game-industry instead of downloading games for the PC like I did before. But then you want to buy a game, and they say you cannot buy it! This makes me really angry!!!!! All the people that say, you must buy games, otherwise you steal something! But the good games are always 16 or 18 years or older, so what do I have to do? I prefer buying, but I can't!

Stats : 15 Replies

Jobs and Learning : Intern at 16?

Well I'm really good with computers, i've taken an A+ computer repair class, and C++ development class in my highschool, and hoping to get A+ certified this summer... anyone know of any companies that could possibly hire a 16 year old with A+ certification... I'm looking into something with repairing computers, and i'm not sure anyone would take me seriously at 16.

Stats : 11 Replies

What do you you think about public vs private schools?

Jobs and Learning : What do you you think about public vs private schools?

This discussion continues from this thread:
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-107129.html

Basically the discussion is about whether there should only be one type of school available, i.e. public schools, whether there should be freedom to choose private or religious schools and/or whether private schools should receive Government subsidies. Are private and religious schools good institutions for teaching children?

Bikerman wrote:

If a private school does not pay tax then it is essentially subsidised by the tax payer (ie everyone else). Since most private schools have charitable status then that is exactly what happens.

I believe it is fair that the ruling not to pay tax should be applicable to all schools that participate in the school system. Whether the students are in private or public schools, their parents are still paying tax and the students are still part of the education system. They will all be writing the same Government exams at the end of their schooling.

Bikerman wrote:

Why is it OK for a Catholic school to teach that homosexuality is evil and that non-Catholics will burn in hell, but not OK for a racist school to teach their particular type of nastiness?

Perhaps racism is against the law? But I agree, that Catholic schools teaching homosexuality is evil or that non-Catholics will burn in hell is not good. In my experience in South Africa however, that was never really taught to students. One could say it is indirectly there as it is in the religion, but I have not seen it in the teaching. Nor did I feel any animosity from Catholic children for me being non-Catholic. ...

Stats : 36 Replies

Internship (politically correct?)

Jobs and Learning : Internship (politically correct?)

Hi,

If you're (or if you would be) a student or unemployed... will you attend to an unpaid internship?
The company will provide food (lunch, breakfast, tea and coffee) and transportation.
The period is one to three months... you will work (and learn) around 6 to 8 hours/day...

Do you think this is politically correct?

Thanks!

(I started this topic because in my country is not usual this kind of activity and people don't quite understand the difference between a job and internship - "If i work for you why you don't pay me like a regular person?")

Stats : 16 Replies

Jobs and Learning : Young Programmers apparently ignored? :(

Have any of you noticed, but young programmers (that is, children that program), are often ignored. What I mean by ignored, is that when they subscribe to a forum or something to discuss programming, if they reveal that they are children, then people just no longer to bother looking at their posts.

Alright, a social experiment:

Assume I am 13 years old.
Say whatever you want to me, but only if it relates to my (assumed) age.

Stats : 55 Replies

I want to quit my job!

Jobs and Learning : I want to quit my job!

I am fairly successful in my career i guess, cos' I work in TV/Film industry and after university graduation, I was promoted 3 times in my career within 2 years and at the age of 25, I've already a producer and have decent salaries, but as few years goes by, I found that I lost all my passion in this industry and going to work everyday is killing me. I was so passionate about films and movies making since I was 5 or even younger, but working in this field had ripped off all the passion I once had....going to work everyday is actually become torture to me but at the same time, i have to put my game face on because i need to stay at the top of the game to secure my position. So I guess you could imagine how miserable I am living like this day in and day out...

And then about 5 months ago I discovered the whole online business world and decided most of them are spams and some of them are actually profitable if i could put my effort on...i keep learning and learning and realize you would never make as much money as any internet marketing products would boldly claim, if you want a steady source of income, you need to create your own method, that's what I'm doing now and I'm making decent money online too. I constantly have different ideas on my online business which should have huge potentials but since I have my day time job, I usually couldn't complete all the projects i have started...

That's why I'm considering quitting my daytime job and focus on my online business....if you were me, what would you do?

Stats : 12 Replies

behind the rest of the US, which means the last year wasn't too bad, but this year it is starting out pretty slow. Not many jobs out there and lots of people being laid off and for us small business owners, business is slowing down.
Landscape Design as a Career: Getting the Green

Jobs and Learning : Landscape Design as a Career: Getting the Green

I didn't mean to become a business woman. Honestly.

I got into the gardening business because I, like so many other people, "like plants." I was fresh out of college and my English degree wasn't exactly raking in cash. "Besides," I told myself, "I need the sun and the fresh air." For those that are snickering at my choice, you're right. Jobs with "sun and fresh air" actually mean "exposure and blistering work."

So I started as a counter girl, ringing up plants, soil, seeds and tools, watering the thousands of specimens in stock, and answering the endless barrage of the same basic questions. I worked outside when there was ice on the ground, or rain soaking everything I was wearing, or temperature climbing over 100 degrees farenheit, and days so humid that you'd be ringing your socks out before lunch. Ah, the great outdoors. Still, I loved the information, and I had a blast with the other nursery workers.

This plant store also had a landscape design department. After only a year as a counter girl, the position of "landscape designer's assistant" opened up. Everyone working in the plant nursery was gunning for that job. I've never researched so hard. ...

Stats : 1 Post

Has Physics changed your life?

Jobs and Learning : Has Physics changed your life?

Lets talk about it.

Many people, the younger in particular, don't like Physics here in Brazil. They say it's "too dificult" and "unnecessary" for their lives. Let's not talk about the obvious things that the Physics discoveries have done for your comfort in the last century just to talk about 100 years, I mean the actuall classes you've had.

I always loved Physics. In high school specially. Then I joined UnB, University of Brasília, and started the graduation in Physics. It's a fascinating thing. My intelligence went through the roof, seriously. I learnt how to think abstractly, in situations that we cannot see in the dayle experience, I upgraded my Math capabilities and so on. ...

Stats : 33 Replies

How long does it take to settle in an Internet business?

learn driving code to pass a driving theory test?

Jobs and Learning : learn driving code to pass a driving theory test?

Today I failed a British driving theory test.

This is a bit strange considering that, to pass the test, one needs to answer correctly 44 questions out of 50. I managed only 42.

It is even more strange considering that I'm an experienced driver, and I already have a full driving license from another country since 5 years.

The truth is, I only prepared myself using the Highway Code book (which has only rules in it) and didn't practice a simulation of a test on a DVD.

I'm wondering whether the Highway Code book is not needed at all! Now I'm certain that the only way to pass the theory test is to memorise all the answers from the DVD. Test questions sometimes sound as if invented by a machine, with no common sense at all.

If you have a driving license, did you really study the driving code? Did you practice using a CD/DVD or a test book?

Stats : 8 Replies

Jobs and Learning : Parking

Hello,
I have just started domaining. Have got a few domains- 10 to be specific. Can you suggest some good parking companies to start with? Parked.com says it cannot accept domains which are not atleast 6 months old. I have come across this company called noomle. Anybody used it around here? Please suggest something.

Customer Services

Jobs and Learning : Customer Services

I work in customer services, and have done for the last 10 years or so.

Every so often we get an awkward customer.... but one of my current ones really takes the biscuit.

He's asked a question... which I have answered... he doesn't like the answer... so he re-asks the question in a different way.... with some additional information just to confuse things.... and repeat.

I know what I want to tell him... but I can't as if I tell him what I think, as the consequences would not be favourable....

It is very frustrating....
"CHORES" around the house!! How do you do yours?

Jobs and Learning : "CHORES" around the house!! How do you do yours?

I do the dishes around the house...I do the laundry....I "light a fire" under my husband and children to do their part of what needs done around the house. This is goofy...but I use a game off of Real Arcade called Fab Fashion (my girls found the game and showed it to me, of course I had to play after I saw it) as a "motivation" to do things around the house. In the game you have to do things in a sequence to make sure that you get them all done. After I play the game for a while, I put the things I need to do in a sequence and then go do them. I chain all of my chores together, and try to make it fun to do the things I need done. If I don't find a creative way to do the things that need done, I get angry because no one else is doing their part.

What does everyone else do to motivate themselves? Maybe what you do isn't as goofy as what I do, but I would REALLY like to hear what everyone else does do. I think the reason that we all read things online is because it pertains to us. This pertains to everyone. ...

<a href="http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-88650.html" title=""CHORES" around the house!!
How do employers feel if you travel a lot?

Jobs and Learning : How do employers feel if you travel a lot?

My family and I are full-time RV'ers, but not old enough to retire. We travel from place to place and pick up jobs where we go.

The question that comes to my mind is whether or not employers are not going to be very encouraged to hire someone who travels every 3-4 months regardless of their experience. The fields I apply in have been customer service related such as call centers and waiting tables.

I'm curious if anyone else has traveled and picked up jobs where they go and have had some trouble.

Stats : 3 Replies

Jobs and Learning : My Report on the Home Based Business Boom

Being in the midst of a recession you may be asking yourself, is this a good time for home based business. The answer is an astounding yes! Not just for Global Cash Flow Network but other corporations such as, McDonalds, and Wal-Mart. People have been turning to the web for more services, trying to get more bang for their buck. The reasoning people are doing this in a recession is obvious, there is less wasteful spending in times of hardship. Now that being said, how can you take advantage of the opportunities out there? Where are all the deals? How can you make money promoting products and websites? I did not have the answers until I came across this powerful affiliate program...
Hello my name is Mike. I'm going to share some information about Global Cash Flow Network, I accidently bumped into this company; I dialed the wrong number, but still inquired on what they had to offer. ...

Stats : 2 Replies
