Funny website about bad crafts for sale

Hobbies and Animals : Funny website about bad crafts for sale

I know there's a bunch of crafty people on here, so here's a website that should probably amuse you... it's Regretsy.com - regrettable craft items on Etsy.com.

They're not making fun of the crafters themselves, they're just making fun of awful crap that some of them seem expect to actually be able to sell, for real money.

I think probably the worst offender is a poorly rendered painting of what appears to be a limbless individual in a hospital bed... and they have a giant kitten head. What's worse, they priced this monstrosity at $99,000 dollars.

Some of the items are baffling, but amusing, like the uterus pillows, and some are just baffling, like a rock with U.S.A. painted on it, and they apparently take two weeks to make, for some reason.

Anyway, the humorous commentary on Regretsy is entertaining, it's kinda like What Not To Crochet and What Not To Knit, but they're taking aim at EVERYBODY who makes weird rubbish and tries to sell it. I mean really, who actually wants a molded polymer clay vulva on a chain?

Stats : 19 Replies

Sure, timon in the movie Lion King did you remember? was one loveable meerkat. But there is somuch more to these creatures than what you've seen in disney animation. For one did you know that meerkats are immune to venom?

Stats : 10 Replies

Hobbies and Animals : Puppy Vs. Kitten

For me, it would be SO Hard to choose, but in the end I believe that the puppy would win, I am a sucker for dogs...

Beer Brewing

Hobbies and Animals : Beer Brewing

Well, I have only been brewing for a little under a year now and I am in love with it. I can make the kind of beer that I want to drink at minimal cost. And frankly, it tastes better than most I can buy. My only issue is the "waiting." When you have that stagnant time where you weren't able to start a brew or you were too low on funds to get supplies, and you have to kick off that "first batch". I noticed that without a rotation process, there's more waiting than brewing or drinking. These are the sad moments.

Anyway, any other brewers out there? If so, what's your favorite to brew, cost aside? I say "cost aside" because my favorite is probably IPAs, but due to the high cost of hops, they can get a little pricey to make. I have yet to successfully do a lager due to the lack of environment/temperature control (they're a little picky).

Also, has anyone made sake, mead, wine, etc.? ...

Stats : 31 Replies

What do you think about animal interaction programs?

Hobbies and Animals : What do you think about animal interaction programs?

I love animals, of all kind, size and shape. I am a biologist and I work with animals for my research as well. I have always had mixed feelings about zoos and aquariums (including sea world like places) because on the one hand I love to go to those places to see the animals and learn about them, also to take my son and hopefully help him learn how respect all forms of life. But on the other hand i feel bad for the animals because they are prisoners or slaves, most of them anyway.

Last weekend I went to Sea world and participated in one of their Beluga interaction programs, where you get in the water with the Beluga and give it a few signals so the beluga performs something. I was doubtful about doing it, but I just couldn't resist it. And here is what I think now....

Many animals work for humans, not only in Zoos and Aquariums but also in farms, laboratories and sports as well. I think now I regard these animals as "working animals" and as long as their are treated well and with respect I think it's OK to have them work "with" humans.

What I noticed with the beluga interaction program is that they don't let you do whatever you want, or bother the beluga, they just guide you and tell you which hand signals to give the Beluga and at the same time the beluga practices these cues. I thought the whole thing was very balanced, I got to see the beluga up close and even interact with it and I noticed that the Beluga never showed signs of stress.

So, after feeling so bad/happy about all this...I turn on the TV and their are advertising this show of bull riding...and the poor bull is kicking and jumping and I am PRETTY sure that bull was no happy and was VERY stressed...

That's why I came to the conclusion that I will support any human group that uses animals for work or entertainment as long as they respect the animal and use positive methods to train and communicate with it.

What do you think? ...

Stats : 3 Replies

Where can I find a real small dog?

Hobbies and Animals : Where can I find a real small dog?

I saw a picture of a dog that was less than twenty centimeters long. Real cute! I found out in Google that some dogs of that race don't grow much, but it seems that it is not guaranteed that the animal will remain small. I don't know the name of the race in English. In Portuguese is "MATÊS". The Google search didn't help me much to find people who would sell them (it's taking too long to find relevant sites). I would like to buy one for my kids.

I would appreciate if anybody could help.

Thanks.

Stats : 18 Replies

Palm Oil Plantations

Hobbies and Animals : Palm Oil Plantations

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure what the standards are in other countries but in Australia palm oil can be (and usually is) labelled on all food products as Vegetable Oil. If you don't know about palm oil manufacturing it is definetely something that you should look into.

Essentially large scale deforestation in areas such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea is occuring so that palm trees can be planted for palm oil production. This is greatly affecting wild populations of Orangutans, Tigers, Elephants and many many other animals. In Sumatra alone an area larger than the American state of Maryland (over 40,000 square Km) will be deforested over the next 20 years.

What I can't get over is the fact that they are removing one the most fertile biomes in existence to harvest a product that has been directly linked with heart disease. If you want to help, it can be as simple as opening a new tab/window and clicking to sign a petition, please do. The following are some links you can take to help fight the good fight.
Well there are definetely more that are out there if your interested. But mainly pay attention when you shop, it doesn't take long to read the ingredients but it does take a while to regrow a rainforest.

Stats : 6 Replies

Fellow lovers of botanical oddities... (~image intensive~)

Hobbies and Animals : Fellow lovers of botanical oddities... (~image intensive~)

...I present you with a few of Earth's unique flora.

Lets start of with a couple ant plants. In nature, ants inhabit the cavernous caudex of these plants and provide it not only with protection, but also fertilization through droppings.

Here's
Hydnophytum moseleyanum
(papuanum)

and
Myrmecodia beccarii
.

Now for the plant that inspired this post. I got it in the mail a few days ago and it's my first Ant fern. This is
Lecanopteris luzonensis
.

A close up of its beautiful, hollow rhizome:

Finally, we get to a few carnivorous sundews from Australia. These plants belong to the
Petiolaris Complex
and are some of my favorite
Drosera
.

Drosera paradoxa
- Mt. Bomford, Kimberley, WA

Drosera dilatato-petiolaris
"TAHBWG3 clone"

This one I grew from seed;
Drosera (lanata x broomensis) x ordensis

and last but not least;
Drosera falconeri

<a href="http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-109869.html" title="Fellow lovers of botanical oddities...
Collecting or hoarding?

Hobbies and Animals : Collecting or hoarding?

They do find the most embarrassing foibles and mental defects to put on TV these days.

http://gawker.com/5385836/the-war-on-hoarding

Some people collect stuff until it becomes a health / safety hazard, and now A&E has a show about it? I'll take a pass on that one.

My mother was a hoarder. The old term for it is "pack rat" but either way, my mom suffered from it. I had a hell of a time clearing out the house after she died - it was full of newspapers, plastic containers like butter tubs, and old clothes and shoes she got from god only knows where, and all manner of other odd items just because "they might come in handy someday".

I partly understand the mentality, because she was raised during the Great Depression, and back then you never threw away ANYTHING that could possibly be used for something else later, because you never knew if you would have money to buy new things when you needed them... but you'd think that when the piles and boxes stacked up in my old bedroom got taller than her she would have maybe thought to get rid of some stuff.

Anybody else have this problem, or have to deal with a family member who has it?

Stats : 9 Replies

Gardening in difficult places

Hobbies and Animals : Gardening in difficult places

Trying to figure out how to make low maintenance garden in very dry deep shade under maple trees, z5b-6a. Bullet proof plants, recommended for such places, died first. Even invasive species, goutweed and pachysandra, are just static, for a couple of years already. They were watered for establishing and soil was improved before planting.

No big plants, this is narrow long space behind townhouse.
Hardscaping, gravel or bark mulch will be last option.

What you are using in such conditions?

Stats : 14 Replies

Hobbies and Animals : Fashion Shoot - Youthworks

Youthworks are in the midst of launching a complete new look to their fashion range. I was hired to photograph some of these new items on location at various city spots and in the store against a wall for background removal later.

In the store itself I shot one 580EX II through an umbrella against the largest wall we could find. Ambient light from the shop lights was enough to create enough contrast for the removal process.

On location I took my flash off camera, set a shutter of 1/160 (being as close to the max sync speed on the 580EX II as I'd like to go without having to activate HSS) with an ISO of 100. I could then adjust aperture willy nilly depending on how much ambient was available – ranged between f/4.0 to f/6.3.

The entire day was a blast – all the models were super fun to work with, the MUA's did a stunning job and Charlotte ran the day without a hiccup – a testament to her skills not only in the studio but on location also.

Nightclub shoot - Zhivago (photography)

Hobbies and Animals : Nightclub shoot - Zhivago (photography)

Zhivago is a brilliant club to shoot in. Take a look at the available ambient light!! A whole lot of care has been taken to decorate this club in beautiful murals and colours. It's a pleasure to drag that shutter here!!

Next time I shoot here I am gonna rock with two flashes and try to go even lower with the shutter. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am thinking the more light i throw at the same time (ie two 580EX II's) will negate any chance of motion blur, even more so than with one flash? I've also just bought the 16-35 f/2.8 and on a full frame baby, this width will be PERFECT for tight packed clubs like Zhivago.

Hobbies and Animals : brand new hamsters--how to tame them, and other issues

Ok, so we ended up with these hamsters that we never meant to have. My partner's a grade school teacher...these things happen.

They're dwarf hamsters. Russian...Campbell...I'm not sure which. There are two boys and three girls. We didn't want them to breed, so we separated them into different cages as soon as we figured out their genders. The boys are sweet. One of them already lets me hold him. THe other male is smaller and even though he nips me a little, I can barely feel it.

THe girls...they're a different story. One of them is crazy aggressive. ...

Stats : 6 Replies

Putting up shelving on plaster walls

Hobbies and Animals : Putting up shelving on plaster walls

Hi,

I am trying to add a few shelving units that anchor with regular wood screws on my walls. The problem is that there are no studs to anchor the screws. The wall (as far as I know) is just plaster material. Does anyone know the best way to anchor a shelf that will take considerable weight with these types of walls, if I have no wood under the wall to anchor with?

Thanks!

Stats : 9 Replies

Animal Blessing

Hobbies and Animals : Animal Blessing

Well I found it pretty neat to find out that a local church was doing something different called "Animal Blessings" one Sunday and I learned a little more about it. What they did was took a bunch of fold out chairs to their parking lot and set them up like they would for a normal service and had an alter for the pastor to speak at in the front. They invited everyone to bring there animals scaling from small mice to large horses to come and be blessed. This was also another way to try to get others to come to a church service and see what things were like in that church. They did a small service and then started to bless each animal. During some of the time everyone got to walk around and meet each other and allow the pets to do the same. Here is a good picture of our Great Dane being blessed by the pastor.
Electronics as a Hobby:

Hobbies and Animals : Electronics as a Hobby:

From the year 2000 I started to work with various electronics projects like radio transmitters, audio amplifiers, sound processing kits, digital logic circuits, microprocessor based device, etc. But that time I had very poor knowledge about it. After I increased my knowledge it became a serious hobby to me. I like songs very much and like to sing. When I entered to voice conference at any chat, I tried to use a voice effect with my microphone to surprise my friends. I simply use an ECHO and Delay attaching device. Recently I build a single chip circuit for Echo & Delay. At the same times I am working with High watt long range FM transmitters and trying to get permission from our “Tele Regularity Commission”.
Friends, if you are interested about this hobby or any other electronics project, I will add my projects here.

Stats : 12 Replies

Hobbies and Animals : Scooter XMAX performance upgrade

If you have an XMAX 125 CC you can gain performance easily for cheap by changing two pieces :

- variator rolls : put some Malossi variator rolls 9g
- clutch springs : get a set of Malossi springs for maxi scooter and put the white set on your scooter clutch.

I did that on mine and it was amazing.

enjoy

Gardens-how to keep them safe from cats

Hobbies and Animals : Gardens-how to keep them safe from cats

Despite the fact that I love cats, they can wreak havoc on a garden...especially if they're the neighbor's cats! In my case, I live in a fairly big city, and my garden is on the roof. Anyone familiar with city living knows that most roofs are connected in dense places, and stray cats live on roofs...sometimes just to avoid the dogs that may be in the street.

Two cats terrorized my garden at first, but then I did two things. I took a mature catnip plant (the thing was HUGE!) and put it in a hard-to-reach niche. Then I planted Rue in pots, and set them amongst my plants.

Cats HATE Rue. It smells terrible to them, though humans can't smell it much. The leaves are an irritant to the eyes, skin and nose...even for humans! So don't eat it, and avoid rubbing against it. For me, the pots are out-of-the-way just enough that I don't brush against them.

Rue is also a beautiful plant. It has darling yellow blossoms during the warm season.

SO...now the cats purr as close as they can get to the catnip, and ignore me completely. ...

Stats : 5 Replies

What NOT to blog about

Hobbies and Animals : What NOT to blog about

I have something of a dilemma lately, and I'm betting I'm not the only one with this problem. Some of the topics I most want to write about on my blog are things I don't dare publish for fear of having them read by friends/family/co-workers etc.

It's paradoxical that I'm perfectly willing to spew my woes, frustrations and conflicts about my relationships, my finances, and battles with my inner demons for perfect strangers to read. I have a lot to say, a good deal of which other people can probably identify and sympathize with... but friends and family might read it.

For example, I don't want my ex-husband (or even worse, his new girlfriend) reading the posts (some humorous, some heart-rending) about the despair his leaving plunged me into. I
really
don't want the new guy I'm becoming interested in to read the funny post about how stupid I feel around him because my frustrated sex drive starts eating my brain whenever I see him.

Yes, I actually wrote these things, and more besides; several of them are quite good (so sayeth the one person I allowed to see them), but I just don't dare hit the PUBLISH button, for fear of repercussions.

Hobbies and Animals : additional day driving light for my car

Hello,
I would like to insert an additional day driving light for my car.
I think it makes sense.
Does somebody have experience with it?
Has somebody already built an additional day driving light on his car?

Greeting tdossi

Stats : 7 Replies

How to give a cat ear mite medicine

Hobbies and Animals : How to give a cat ear mite medicine

How To Give a Cat Ear Mite Medicine

You will need:

The cat's favorite food, in gut busting quantities
Ear mite medicine
A large bath towel
A friend who loves you and/or your cat
Disinfectant
Antibiotic ointment
Bandages

Optional:

Leather gloves
Hockey masks
Tourniquets
Rites of exorcism

Your primary objective is to temporarily immobilize the cat, by wrapping her up like a mummy, because most cats hate ear drops.

1. Stuff the cat with her favorite food until she's happy and lethargic.
2. Spread out a big towel, preferably on a soft surface like a bed or sofa.
3. Place the cat in the middle of the towel, on her side, with her head sticking out at the top. The cat will immediately become suspicious and try to escape. Do not allow this.
3. While you keep the cat in place, have your assistant gently fold kitty's front legs down to her abdomen and hold them in place. At this point, you must spring into swift, decisive action, or kitty will rip your face off and scamper away, hissing promises of future revenge.
4. Once the front paws are properly aligned with the torso, quickly flip one end of the towel over the cat, and roll her up like an angry burrito with filling that wants to kill you.
5. Quickly put the ear mite medicine in the kitty's ears. ...

Stats : 2 Replies

Birth of a Butterfly

Hobbies and Animals : Birth of a Butterfly

Birth of a Butterfly

(can be sung to the tune of Hush Little Baby, Don’t Say a Word)

A mama butterfly lays all her eggs,
Out pops a caterpillar, crawling on its legs.

The caterpillar first is rather thin,
But then it eats till it bursts through its skin.

After growing nice and big,
The caterpillar climbs on a leaf or twig.

It makes a shell where it hangs insiede.
The shell then cracks, and teh parts divide.

Inside the shell, a change was going on,
The form of the caterpillar now is gone.

When the shell opens, what comes out?
A beautiful butterfly fluttering about!

Stats : 2 Replies
