Windows date

Operating Systems : Windows date

Hi,

The DOS/Windows "date" command returns results in different formats depending on the location of the user. A French version of Windows will show the date in the "French" format and a US version will format the date according to US standards.

Is there any way to force the use of the US format in the "date" command ? I need to use the date within a batch file (.bat) and a unique date format would make things much easier.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Background Processes in Windows XP

Operating Systems : Background Processes in Windows XP

I recently posted a topic on building a new system. Thanks to everyone who gave their advice.
Unfortunately, I wussed out, and bought a Dell XPS 400. I'm not overly dissappointed though. It's leaps and bounds above what I had before.
Anyway, my question is about all those things running in the background. I've always heard about preinstalled Dell junk and I'm not that familiar with XP yet. So I really don't know what needs to be running and what doesn't.
Could someone enlighten me on what needs to be turned off?
By the way, you could also tell me just HOW to turn it off to.
Like I said, I'm still feeling out XP.

Stats : 10 Replies

But before buying a usb drive I want to make it sure that my motherboard is capable of booting from the usb drive.
How can I find out that my motherboard is capable of booting from the usb drive ?

Finally biting the bullet and getting rid of Windows

Operating Systems : Finally biting the bullet and getting rid of Windows

After relying on Windows forever, I am so close to making the switching to Linux.

My laptop has been playing up, and I think a complete re-install of windows is necessary. Unfortunately, I don't know if I have the energy for a windows re-install... they are so painful. The last time I tried to re install my (legitimate) key did not work with the

I have already decided on Ubuntu Linux, since I've played around with it before and it seems to me to be the most user friendly and reliable i've come across.

I would've liked to have ran a dual boot system for a while to get used to Linux before completely making the switch, but I just don't have space on my 40 gig hard drive, and no external drive big enough to free up some space.

It's going to be a big a change for me, software wise, but my biggest worry is not being able to find drivers for all my hardware.

So does anybody know a good source linux hardware drivers? I know for example that my Dlink Wireless card doesn't have any official drivers, so I need to make sure that I have some working drivers before I install linux, otherwise I won't be able to get online to find any other drivers.

I'm also wondering if anybody knows if there are any mail clients for Linux that can import emails from an Outlook .pst file?

Stats : 18 Replies

Operating Systems : To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?

Lately I've been thikning about upgrading to Windows Vista. Though I have some fears. I use my computer mainly play games, development games and software, and other normal day-to-day stuff. So basically I'm asking is Vista worth the upgrade or not?

I'm mainly concerned about security (viruses, malaware, spyware, etc..). I use Avast and AVG for anti-virus and adaware and spybot for spyware and what not.

Stats : 2 Replies

CD/USB installation of Grub to MBR

Operating Systems : CD/USB installation of Grub to MBR

I do wish to find a suitable means to configure and install grub on the 1st track of my Notebook HDD (The MBR and sectors after it - for Bootloader).

I must always install a Linux OS to have this done.

How can I install GRUB on MBR without having to have a LINUX OS.

I normally do install the Linux after I have gotten used to the NB.

Can anyone suggest a CD, Floppy of USB flash drive, or USB HDD approach?

I read about GRUB4DOS, but needs a DOS partition and I don't wish this to be on my NB HDD.

Will it work with DOS on my USB HDD?

Help much appreciated, as I am trying to get rid of my MRBOOTER (which is not a freeware).

With regards.

Stats : 5 Replies

OpenSolaris Live CD Review

Operating Systems : OpenSolaris Live CD Review

I just got my OpenSolaris Live CD and I must say that I'm impressed. For a supposedly server OS, Solaris certainly seems to deliver a powerful and attractive user experience. The default theme is just lovely (it kind of looks like a more elegant take on Vista) and the hardware support is quite good: it found and set up all my computer´s hardware including sound, my Nvidia 3D card (which it supports with full 3D support out of the box) and even detected and set up my wireless card...

Of course, nothing´s perfect: the network can be a bit slow, the USB key detection doesn´t QUITE work yet (it find the keys when I insert them, but wont mount them) and I really miss the availablity of multiple virtual full-screen consoles from Linux, but overall, itś a nice showing and quite fast (for a live CD) making OpenSolaris a good choice for a ¨take it with you ¨Unix environment¨

Stats : 9 Replies

Evil Microsoft .... New Laptops only come with Vista ...

Operating Systems : Evil Microsoft .... New Laptops only come with Vista ...

I find it almost unethical that I am forced to use Vista because almost 100% of new laptops come with Vista operating software without the choice of Windows XP. Since there is an ENORMOUS jump from Windows XP to Windows Vista I would have wanted to wait at least another year until they have tweaked all the bugs. I also want my operating software to be the same going from work to my desktop at home and laptop. I believe Sony Viao Laptops have the option of Windows XP, but where I am it is one of the most expensive laptops versus any of the others. I was given an excuse by one of the sales agents that Windows XP cannot utilize some of the more up to date features of the new laptops, which makes it worse for me, as it would seem that Microsoft has completely abandoned Windows XP in order to coerce people to use the new Vista instead of fixing Windows XP to work with the new hardware. And maybe the hardware manufacturers are in cahoots as if you are to use Vista (which Microsoft is now forcing you to do if you are to buy new hardware), you definitely need to upgrade your hardware in a great leap.

I also get this general feedback from sales agents that the poor manufacturers are completely helpless as far as Microsoft is concerned and are like victims, and I do not understand that. If hardware manufacturers have enough ethics to stand up to Microsoft, they will get what they want, but who is to say that they do not get a quid pro quo deal that we of course do not know the details off.

I genuinely wish there could be some good competition in operating systems. Microsoft seems to be too much of a dictator.

<a href="http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-94051.html" title="Evil Microsoft ....

Operating Systems : Windows Vista - Official Thread

I got it from my MSDN subscription, what did all of you think of it if you seen it? I thought it was actually quite sad.....it still has some errors but the longhorn alpha version was even worser, you couldn't even load the internet without it rebooting....lol......It would be awesome if win vista like joins win xp media center 2005 then the speeds and the converting of movies would be fantastic....but I doubt they will ever do that, 2.4gb is the full size of win vista, and I think it's a waste of space, it can't do much. lol so what are your views on this new invenstion by the win team....is it crap or is it good?

Stats : 539 Replies

I have Windows Vista, and it is nice if you have a new computer.

Operating Systems : online games/programs on vista

Because directx10 has changed the name of many dll's, some programs/games doesnt work with online connection.

Like gamemaker can not use the mplay(multiplayer) functions on vista, so no gamemaker online games works without importing some old dll's +++ on vista.

Have anyone of you got into this problems before, and know how to solve it?

I could need some help...

Stats : 2 Replies

Operating Systems : Fedora Core 9

What do you guys think of fedora core 9 as compared to any earlier releseases of Fedora Core?
I find that it is very slow as compared to earlier releases. Perhaps it is because of KDE 4 as I use mainly kde rather than gnome.
Does anyone else here has the same issue with me?

Very frequent, i find that things load really slowly especially when I use fedora. I am not quite sure what problem it might be so please give me your view.

Stats : 6 Replies

Operating Systems : Why people hate Mac-OS (users)?

I actually not hate mac but the users, hmm what can i say, they become fanatic after using it, they treated other os (windows or even linux) as trash.
After they buy a mac product they just can't stop buying another mac device (iPod, iPhone etc. ), even if mac product is expensive (w/ poor feature compared to another product w/ same price range).

Stats : 37 Replies

Operating Systems : going back to XP

I've been using windows vista for about a year, on a dell insipron 6000 that I bought late 2005-ish (it originally came with XP media centre edition).

I thought vista was cool and all, but I kind of want to switch back to XP. Vista takes up a bit more resources, but the performance is mostly fine. Do you recommend that I go through the hassle to switch back to XP, or should I just keep Vista, because future software etc etc would work better on Vista?

I know its also a personal preference issue, but I wanted to know if there were other advantages in keeping Vista.

Stats : 28 Replies

There are a couple programs that i have my eye on. However, i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which program to use.

i have my eye on the following:

virtual box (free)
Xen (free)

Operating Systems : XP SP 3

I went ahead and installed XP service pack 3 on my regular windows update.
It was a 66meg download.
Even after downloading it took at least half an hour for installation.
The installation rebuilt my driver database and registry.
At the end of the install it did something pretty cool,
it went through a 'cleanup' routine that lasted 5 - 10 minutes.

So far I've ran into any problems from it.
In fact the machine seems to be running a bit faster and smoother.
Uh oh windows problem

Operating Systems : Uh oh windows problem

I'm having an issue with Windows XP, and this is the first time I've seen this happen:

While booting up the computer (I have a Dell desktop), it will come to the windows loading screen (black background, with the little scrolling green bar at the bottom), then the screen will blank out, and the computer will restart again. This process repeats itself ad infinitum. It never actually proceeds to the "select user" screen, but just up to the first windows loading screen, then the computer restarts.

I have to boot up safe mode in order to use the computer.

The above mentioned Windows XP is a copy that I had just installed yesterday morning. It worked fine for that entire day, even after shutting down the comp and restarting it. Now, (circa 10 minutes ago), I discovered this problem. I'm confused, because I have never seen this happen before, and I have no clue what's causing the "infinitely repeating boot screen".

Thanks.

Stats : 4 Replies

Operating Systems : Reinstalling vista

Hello, I am facing a problem when I reinstall my PC with Vista Home edition for the second time. There is a interface each time I boot my PC showing two options in which one of it is "Run earlier version of window". When I choose this option, the system show me that the window is no longer available. I have deleted all the window.old folder. How can I remove the window boot manager interface show that it can detect correctly that I have actually only one window?

Stats : 5 Replies

Windows XP Vs. Vista

Operating Systems : Windows XP Vs. Vista

what's everyone's opinion? I think that XP's actually better for a number of reasons. Anyways, here's a list of pro's and con's.

Vista Pros.
1. Has a 64 bit version-4 gigs of ram ftw
2. um...anything else? o_O
3. Works with lots of programs (windows in general does that)

Vista Cons.
1. Compatibility issues with some programs
2. Numerous other issues with lots of stuff
3. It's windows.

XP Pros.
1.Less compatibility issues
2.More familiar to most people
3. ...

Stats : 7 Replies

Operating Systems : Motherboard Linux...

ASUS has announced that they're going to be including an in-BIOS mini Linux good enough to surf the web and even chat over Skype with on every single motherboard they ship... This has to have Microsoft pretty worried as it could lead to a massive downfall in their marketshare...

Stats : 14 Replies

Ubuntu 8.04

Operating Systems : Ubuntu 8.04

Ubuntu 8.04 is being released tomorrow, April 24th.
Who else is stoked? Cause I sure am.

Code named Hardy Heron, Ubuntu 8.04 sports Linux kernel 2.6.24, Gnome 2.22, Xorg 7.3, and Firefox 3 beta 5. A special mention about this release is that it is their Long Term Support (LTS) release, meaning instead of the usual 18 months security support on normal releases, it gets 3 years for desktop, and 5 years for servers.

I was tempted to download the Release Candidate (RC) and give the LiveCD a go, but then I realized I was on a limited bandwidth and would have to choose between RC and the full release.

Read more about it on the Ubuntu site.

Those of you who can't download large files or don't have a burner can always request CDs from their shipit site free of charge. (shipit however does take upto 10 weeks for the CDs to arrive, and therefore you may want to consider buying the CD from any linux distro site for about 2-3 dollars + shipping)

Stats : 30 Replies

Operating Systems : Cool OS to try on older hardware

I'm a big fan of smaller "super alternative" OSes and I've just found a great one. It's called AROS and is basically AmigaOS for PC, but much prettier looking. Has anyone here ever tried it besides me? If so, I'd be happy to hear what YOU think.

Stats : 21 Replies

Why did not I remember earlier!

Operating Systems : Why did not I remember earlier!

I happened to double click an icon that looked like folder but with an .exe icon when I was cleaning my pen drive removing all unnecessary files. Immediately, I realized that I made a mistake. I activated a virus. Then I started to find .exe files with the same name as that of my windows folder name. This gave a lot of problem.

I was almost about to format my computer and install everything fresh again. I was more than lucky that I found an article about the Windows Restore option. You can find this option in Programs >> Accessories >> System Tool >> System Recovery.

Just select a check point before your problem started and restore your computer back to that date. I did not lose any files nor my emails or web links. Only the problem was solved. I guess other operating systems too provide similar solutions.

Thanks to the system restore tool in Microsoft Windows! ...

Stats : 5 Replies
