Hardware and Electronics : Multiple mice

If I buy 2
wireless
mice of the same model & brand to use on 2 computers next to each other will the 2 mice "transmit" differently so one doesn't control both computers?

I want to get a wireless mouse with a tiny usb receiver, maybe two on black friday and I was wondering if that would be a problem.

Stats : 1 Post

Hardware and Electronics : Android Phones and AT&T

So I'm in the market for a new phone and I'm on AT&T. I haven't heard any news, but does anyone know if an Android phone is coming to AT&T? Not really wanting an iPhone. Otherwise I'm just looking into some of the Samsungs AT&T has cheap. I don't really want the $30/mo required charge for a smartphone (which sucks when many have wifi which would let me use the internet features for free sometimes).

Anyway, I'm guessing AT&T won't get an Android phone for a while right?

Stats : 2 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : DDR3 - dual channel vs. triple channel?

Right, so I'm really new to this DDR3 business.
Please, can somebody explain the dual channel DDR3 supported motherboards and the other ones with 6 slots?
I tried looking for a good explanation online, but didn't find any good article or something in that sense.

Stats : 16 Replies

The future of the Atom Process and Netbooks

Hardware and Electronics : The future of the Atom Process and Netbooks

Hi

I bought a eMachines EZ1601
http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=EZ1601-01

As a second computer to program on in Delphi. I'm very happy with this computer. So much that I would like to get a more powerful Atom based All-In-One processor in the future.

Do you know of any advancements in Netbooks and the Atom processor.

Are there new ones coming. Maybe with Win7 and more memory..

What is the fastest one? for instance..

Thank you..

Stats : 3 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : Original xBox

I have an original xBox that has been sitting in my basement not getting much attention recently since I got a newer gaming system. Does anyone have any fun ideas of what I can do with it? I doubt I could get much of anything by selling it so I might as well have some fun with it.

If you have any thoughts or even referrals to other websites, that would be great! Thanks for the suggestions.

Stats : 8 Replies

What kind of TV do you have?

Hardware and Electronics : What kind of TV do you have?

I have not had a TV since 2001, but am getting curious about world news again, and purchased myself an LG LCD. Amazing how light it is compared with my previous very heavy TV in 2001.

What kind of TV do you have? Is it an LCD or monitor? Do you play TV through your computer?

I find that so much has changed. I also purchased an LG VHS and DVD read and and record player and am now waiting to have a dish installed. Quite a learning curve in the Middle East. All the gadgets are there, but selection and installation can be quite a hurdle. Communication is always a challenge, but I am sure eventually it will come right. When I was in Vancouver, Canada it was effortless, and still is.

Stats : 28 Replies

CPU question: 2.0 GHz or 2.2 GHz (Dual-Core)

Hardware and Electronics : CPU question: 2.0 GHz or 2.2 GHz (Dual-Core)

Hello.
Im thinking on getting myself a new laptop, but i have a question before I do.

I have two laptops in mind, and they each have the same specs except for the CPU.

One is:
AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60 2.0GHz

the other one is:
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-64 2.2 GHz

They are both dual-core, and the only difference is that one is 2.0 GHz and the other is 2.2 Ghz.

I want to know if there is a big difference between these two, especially because they are dual-core.
Is there a big performance difference between these two?

Stats : 16 Replies

Case review: Thermaltake V9

Hardware and Electronics : Case review: Thermaltake V9

Hey all,

I had to replace my crap OEM midi tower case as it was running barely cool enough with the side off, no front fan, and filling up with dust.

So I did a small amount of research and found the Thermaltake V9 case. I found a local supplier with one available, one of the ones with a window.

The case I got has a single 23cm fan on the top, a 12cm 'turbo' fan on the front and a 12cm fan on the rear. The 12cm fans can be replaced with optional 14cm fans, and you can also get an optional fan which mounts below the CPU part of the motherboard to get more cooling going on there.

Anyway, the case has room for 4x 5.25" drive bays, 5x internal 3.5" bays and 2x external 3.5" bays. This means I was finally able to mount my floppy drive correctly instead of hanging it out the side, as I'm running 3 hard drives at the moment.

The tool-less mounting for the drives seems sturdy enough, it holds the drives in place which is obviously the most important thing but I would say that if you transport the computer it would be prudent to make sure everything is still in place afterwards.

Don't bother using the tool-less components for the card slots, it only takes three screws to remove it. It doesn't hold cards in sturdily enough for my liking, but the screw holds are threaded so you can use the standard case screws to hold your cards in.

It has 7 slots, by the way.

The case also has the PSU mounted at the bottom, rather than the top, and this has certainly made life a lot easier for me!

The only problem I had with this was the fact that my Thermaltake 430w PSU had the ATX Power cords barely long enough to reach their connections on the motherboard. I had to undo the bottom two screws on the PSU to allow it to turn slightly to get enough length. This won't be a problem with all motherboards or PSU depending on the location of the motherboard's power connections.

I'm fairly sure most high end PSUs have longer cords anyway.

Started the machine up when I was done (everything worked straight up first go, I was very pleased about that!). The computer is running significantly cooler now, which is probably mostly due to the 23cm fan in the top, as heat tends to rise it would be more likely to be drawn out that way IMO.

Unfortunately, the weather has been quite cool the last few days unlike last Tuesday when it was 36" C, so I don't know how well it holds up in hot weather, but judging by what I'm seeing so far it's going to be just fine .

It's probably the best cheap case on the market, although I will say that the steel is a bit flimsier than that of an OEM case.

I'm itching for an acrylic clear case

Hardware and Electronics : I'm itching for an acrylic clear case

I don't know why but lately all type of cases from aluminum, steel, .. plastic just not appealing to me
so now I have the itch to build a system using acrylic

this one looks like a good choice http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811166053

but with that I need to choose my hardware carefully as they need to be a bit appealing from power supply choice, to my optical drive.... unless I spray paint them before adding them up hmmm

any thoughts?

Stats : 6 Replies

Right now I'm using a self-build PC, but it's quite old:

P4 prescott @ 3Ghz (stock cooling)
Asus P4P800S-SE mobo
512 DC DDR400 memory (generic)
Maxtor 80GB (non SATA)
Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128Mb @400Mhz core,205Mhz mem
Generic 400W PSU
Generic Case
Xerox 15" LCD screen (I'm happy with it)

I'm hopefully buying a new rig next week:

Core 2 duo E6300 (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro)
G.Skill 1GB [DC] DDR2 800Mhz CL4/5 memory
GeCube x1950PRO 512MB 256Mb (very strong mid-range)

Ok. I must admit this is pretty cool. My only problem, I'm not a big fan of the dead gaps between the monitors. That would bug me.

What if I got 6, 1080P Projectors, and lined them up in two rows of 3 just right, so I get a seamless projection on my wall...

A bit on the pricey side, but is that a sweet idea or What?! I flatter myself.

Stats : 1 Post

1.2 Petabyte Hard Drive

Hardware and Electronics : 1.2 Petabyte Hard Drive

The owner of Colossal Storage, Michael Thomas, says he's the first person to solve non-contact optical spintronics which will in turn ultimately result in the creation of 3.5-inch discs with a million times the capacity of any hard drive - 1.2 petabytes of storage, to be exact

1.2 Petabyte is a hell lot of space there!
For hotse of you who don't know:
1.2Petabyte = 1 228.8Terabyte = 1 258 291.2Gigabyte

The 1.2Petabyte Hard Disk is expected to be finished around 2010-2011 and would cost approximately $750USD for 1.

Hardware and Electronics : On-stite vs. Mail-in warranty service

Mail in warranty service sucks. Hewlett Packard asked me if I want to send them $400 to repair some hinges and replace an LCD cover. Dell use to do that stuff for free when I had on-site service. I just told them to perform only in-warranty repairs and ship it back to me. I barely noticed any cracks and don't want to pay for that kind of stuff.

Stats : 6 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : Internet TV

Where can I learn more about Internet TV? I'm hearing more and more about ITV, but am confused over all the variants.

We have broadband WiFi in our home and I'm looking for a solution (Set Top Box?) that will use my WiFi as a broadband Internet link as it's input and then output video directly to my television. Such a box would NOT need a PC. An associated 'remote' (hand held) would communicate with the ST Box for control and internet TV program selection.

Is anyone following this?

I have found an Intel mobo with 2xDDR3 slots, and 4xDDR2 slots. 6 slots total. the manufacture website says the 2 DDR3's can have 8Gigs total, and the 4 DDR2's can have 16Gb total. That said, if I were to buy 2x2Gig Sticks of DDR3, and 4x2Gig sticks of DDR2, would I be able have them all in, giving me 12Gigs total of memory?? Or can I ONLY use DDR3 OR DDR2?

I am so confused. If I Can have 12Gigs, even if they all aren't DDR3, it would be an interesting solution for massive RAM in this build.

Here's the Mobo if you're wondering http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P45TS

Stats : 4 Replies

I am trying to open the disc in Windows explorer, but its properties is showing zero disc space for some reason. Thus, the disc does not open although it is appearing in explorer. Since the disc won't open, I am unable to save files to it. What can I do. I am not even able to reformat the disc. I do not know what is wrong.

Stats : 7 Replies

Help Arty build his first PC!

Hardware and Electronics : Help Arty build his first PC!

I've been researching for almost a week on building a custom computer!

I have a parts list, and I want to know if all the parts are compatible with each other. Being a complete n00b, I cannot be 100% sure: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15662408

The problem is, I've read some reviews on my motherboard on Newegg that it is very picky about RAM. I don't know if my memory will work with the motherboard, especially the one that I am getting, because a reviewer said that it didn't work with his motherboard.

Tell me what you think of it though, and if you have used my motherboard, tell me what RAM you have that worked with it.

Stats : 3 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : External Hard Drive compatibility

I have a 2007 Hewlett Packard Pavillion DV9000T laptop with two internal hard drives. I use one as the data drive and the other for programs and old files that I don't change much. I have been attempting to get an external enclosure so that when my system drive is down and I have to sen my computer back to Hewlett Packard, I will have my data available. I ordered an enclosure off of eBay and the pins don't line up with my hard drive. I have a hard drive that seems to have been manufactured by Western Digital and is model WD1200BEVS-60USTO. It also has drive parameter numbers LBA 234441648. Can I get an enclosure for this type of drive to use as an external drive.

Stats : 5 Replies

My gripe : Sony, sometimes you really suck.

Hardware and Electronics : My gripe : Sony, sometimes you really suck.

I have bit my tongue for months now and just can't do it anymore. Why in the hell is it that every time I turn on my PS3, I have to wait for 20 minutes before I can play a game. Were I 12, with little to do, I would likely give two shits less – cause, after all, I have dick to do. I on the other hand, am not 12 and usually do have shit I need to do – I usually grab a quick game or two of (INSERT GAME NAME HERE) in between doing that shit. But can I do that with my PS3? NO! Why? Cause every god-damned time I turn the fucker on it starts pulling the ever so important updates.

Really, what the fuck, Sony. I don't understand why I have to pull a 5 part update every time I put a game in your SIX-HUNDRED DOLLAR CONSOLE (ok, so I have the Drake edition and some extras, but yea, $600 smackers), the damn thing steals 20 minutes of my life… I own a 360, I own a Wii – they don't do this shit to me. So, a console ultimately made for children (Wii) and a console marketed as your direct competition to your console (360) both understand my needs as a gamer a whole shit pot more than you apparently do – wanna take a guess at what consoles get the largest percentage of my play time? ...

Stats : 10 Replies

Recommendations for a new laptop?

Hardware and Electronics : Recommendations for a new laptop?

Any recomendations from users for a person looking to invest in a new laptop?

I'm looking for a 15'' inch (15.6, 15.4 - that kind of sizes) laptop solely for work. Will install Linux straight away and will use for document editing, slideshows, e-mail, web browsing...you can sum it up by saying that i'll be using it for WORK only.

I'm capping myself at £400 - students budget. Any suggestiong what could be usefull but not too sluggish?

Stats : 12 Replies

Recommendation for a new Gaming Laptop

Hardware and Electronics : Recommendation for a new Gaming Laptop

Alright first off I don't wanna hear any "Desktops are better/cheaper" or anything of the sort. I really don't care if they're cheaper or better, because well. ANYTHING that's made past 2005 is better than what my current desktop is. (AMD Athlon 2500+ 1.8 ghz ****SINGLE CORE****, Nvidia Geforce 6800, 1gb ram, 160 gb HDD) Sucks eh?

This is going to be my laptop for College for the next 2 years, and after that Probably 3-4 years at university, so I want something that's going to last, and something that's going to be able to run what I play. And also another reason I don't want to hear the "Desktops........." is because I'm going to be taking this with me to my classes, and I can't see myself dragging a case, monitor and such to each of my classes.

Anyways, that being said, I've looked at a few myself already,
Alienware and iBuyPower , to name a few. Though I have heard alot of BAD reviews on iBuyPower, and Alienware are a bunch of Overpriced money gougers.

So, here's what I'm looking for.,

I'm looking for at LEAST a Core i7 (Don't question it, I want a core i7 )

For ram I'm looking for something between 3-4gb ddr3

For the Gpu, I really don't mind if it's ATI or NVIDIA, but if possible it should either be Crossfire/SLI enabled, or if that's not avaliable a GeForce GTX 260M 1gb would do just fine since I've been seen it on several laptop sites i checked out (including Alienware)

Harddrive ehm.... 500 gb 7200 rpm should suffice , If theres an option for Raid 0, that's preferred. No SSD's!!!

And, IF at all possible 17 inch screen is preferred, but 15 inch will do just the same.

It should also have at least a 2 year warranty, and be shippable to Canada.

So, that's pretty much what I want, any suggestions are greatly appreciated (unless you bring desktops into this ).

Right now I don't really have a specific price range. ...

Stats : 14 Replies

About the Linksys WRT120N router...

Hardware and Electronics : About the Linksys WRT120N router...

Hi all,
I post this just to aware you about a problem with a Linksys router.
I thought that maybe only I have this problem but I saw on Linksys forum that more people have the same issue (and they are from all over the world).
Because the router is new model and it's N (instead of G) you may think to buy one...
Before of that please read that topic about the disconnecting issue and consider it.

http://forums.linksysbycisco.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&message.id=149464

Quote:

I just bought a WRT120N and at different times it will randomly restart and disconnect all the computer on my network I have 4 wired devices and 4 Wireless devices. Has anyone else had similar problems or any suggestions to fix the problem.

HTC Magic

Hardware and Electronics : HTC Magic

In a few days the HTC Magic will be available in my country. I've seen some movies on youtube and read the specifications. This device seems to be great, it had all the functionality I want. But ok, reviews on the internet are not always that objective. So, I want to hear if some here has experience with the HTC Magic.
Is the Android platform good?
Is the device stable and comfortable?

I know from a previous HTC device that it was not always that easy to press the right letter on the touch screen. Many many times you press the letter next to it...
The thing why I'm afraid to buy that one, is for glass break. You don't have a extended keyboard, so your device would be for trash...
Another question that was not clear in the reviews. How well is synchronization? ...

Stats : 3 Replies

I think I found a midi tower that is really silent and dont want it wrecked by a power supply unit that sounds like a jet engine

Stats : 7 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : How does one go about with getting your own server?

I'm more curious about this, than actually starting with my own server in the immediate future, but how would one go about with getting your own server? Is it expensive? Does it take specialist IT knowledge? What kind of specifications would be needed for a server like that?

Also, what does a virtual server mean? I have looked it up in Wikipedia, but cannot understand why one would want to have a virtual server, what would you be using it for? Would people go for it because it is "cheaper" than having a dedicated server?

Stats : 9 Replies

external pc?

Hardware and Electronics : external pc?

silly title but anyways i wanted too ask what hardware on the pc can be external, the reason i ask is becasue i think i found a way too solve all my pc upgrade problems....that is too make as much of my pc external as possible for example, have a basic pc with good ram and a good motherboard then add on and external sound hard, external hard drive, external blu ray/dvd drive etc....

that way i can seperate my gaming drive (drive with all my games) and my music drive so that if i ever catch a virus i know my other drives would be ok......this also works well for me cause i have access too extermemly fast internet at a friends and would rather carry external hard drives( so i can travel with all my goodies plug em into my mini laptop etc)

i was just thinking what else can be externaly placed on a pc
sound card?
ram?
video cards?

etc
and how well they work compared too internal hard ware...and what would be best too use FIREWIRE or USB2.0

(technically all i want in my pc is amazing ram like 8 gigs and a good motherboard....)

Stats : 5 Replies

a human-friendly input device

Hardware and Electronics : a human-friendly input device

It's not always comfortable to use a standard wheely mouse with a laptop. For some applications, like software sound synthesizers or other music production software, I'd really like to use something else as an input device. A touch screen would probably be okay to play with knobs, wheels, rotary encoders or other non-standard control elements. I haven't tested that since I have no touch screen.

I'd really like to have some more or less universal input device for my laptop that would work with software synths as well as in desktop applications in general (Firefox, board games or whatever) as a replacement for mouse. Can anyone suggest me what I'm talking about?

Stats : 9 Replies

Dell S2409W 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor - Problem

Hardware and Electronics : Dell S2409W 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor - Problem

I recently got a Dell S2409W 24" Widescreen flat panel monitor and am using it as an extended desktop screen but am experiencing a problem with it. What appears to be randomly, the screen will go black, as if the monitor is being turned off, for about a second and then it will come back. There is no message that appears on screen when this happens. The following are some other stats on my system:

OS: Windows XP Professional
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 Series
Resolution setting: 1920 x 1080 (from what I can determine this is the highest setting option)
Computer: HP Compaq 6910p

For the most part this doesn't cause a problem but when it happens it usually happens frequently for about 5 minutes and then it goes away. This is the second display I've received from Dell as the first one they sent me was physically broken. I'm wondering if I need to send this one back too.

Thanks!

Stats : 5 Replies

Hardware and Electronics : Amex Warranty

I think I have asked about these before, but I do not think I got a response. I bought my 160 GB iPod classic on 9/12/07 with a two year extended Apple Care warranty and a Hewlett Packard notebook computer on 2/8/07 with a three-year extended warranty on my American Express Gold Card. Does the American Express Warranty protection apply to extended warranties?

Stats : 3 Replies

I need to buy a computer

Hardware and Electronics : I need to buy a computer

My budget is about $1000.
My parents are paying for it. I don't quite know how to "build" one myself, and my parents probably wouldn't allow me to do so, so I have to either order one or buy one retail.

I need the best that I can get for less than $1000. I don't have much money so I won't be able to replace it, so I don't want it to become "outdated" for at least 2 years.

I need it to handle some games with high graphics (good graphics card), convert stuff at a decent speed (good processor), and be able to multi task efficiently (at least 4GB ram and a dual/quad core processor).

Where should I go to order such a computer?

Stats : 14 Replies

1.8 inch 160GB Trek external HDD

Hardware and Electronics : 1.8 inch 160GB Trek external HDD

I have bought an earlier version of the 1.8" 160 GB Trek drive - smaller than a 2.5" HDD.

But I am unable to use it for Booting - the BIOS do not recognize the USB HDD as a boot media.

I bought a latest Trek external USB HDD 1.8" 160 Trek drive - much smaller - 2.4 inch width, 3 inch length and 0.5inch thick.

Good for backup use, but again cannot be use for Booting.

Anyone have use this Trek 1.8 inch external USB HDD, and manage to use it for booting any OS?

Help and advice are appreciated.

HP extended warranty

Hardware and Electronics : HP extended warranty

My laptop has a 3 year warranty expiring at the beginning of February. I have been told that Hewlett-Packard sells extended warranties. Does anyone know anything about these aftermarket extended warranties. I had good experience in a similar situation with my Dell extended warranty. I am just wondering if anyone has had experience with service from HP on this type of plan. Is the aftermarket extended warranty service the exact same as the original three year warranty service?

Stats : 1 Post

Hardware and Electronics : Light Notebook from Toshiba

I remember recently visiting one shop, offering a Toshiba Tough Book Notebook.

It is powerful enough for business use, and yet very light - using low voltage Intel processor.

Anyone knows of this notebook and care to share on your experience on it?

I am looking to replace my heavy notebook, as the backpack + notebook is giving me a fair bit of neck aches.

Thanks for all your responses. With regards.

Stats : 5 Replies
