Music : Magic Dirt @ the Gov

The first show back after the passing of bass player (and founding member) Dean Turner was a sombre affair for Magic Dirt. Hitting the stage with a solid 5 minutes of feedback, they slid nicely into their best track (IMHO) "Babycakes". What followed next was a set full of hits and favourites, the intensity and energy only pausing midway through proceedings for a heart felt, teary speech by Adalita and a toast of raised JD & Coke's to the late Dean Turner.

This show was billed as a tribute to Dean - a thank you from the band for his contribution and efforts as well as a thank you to the fans.

With the future of Magic Dirt not being known even to the band themselves, Adalita thanked Adelaide punters for their years of support, and in particular the last few months. Acknowledging that the loss had been massive, she delivered a message of an uncertain future: "We don't know where to from here, but thank you." Only barely holding back tears she finished with "...having said all that, now, let's rock the f*ck out!!" And rock they did.

Lighting tonight was tricky. Perhaps it was to set the tones of the evening or perhaps it was someone not doing their job, but either way I was faced with a tough one, Magic Dirt throw themselves around willy nilly and I knew I would have difficulty capturing some of that movement with such low shutters and no flash.

Not happy with what I got in the first three songs, I shot the last few as well (no 3 song rule at the Gov) partially as I knew things would get heavier towards the end of the set and if history taught me anything, more than likely Adalita would wind up on the floor.

The two previous times I have shot the Funkoars I've also lined up a publicity shot that I feel best represents what the oars are about. Those two shots (backstage at live at the zoo with alcohol tickets and mock guns to their head and the shower shot in the green room at the gov) have set the bar in my head for any future shots of the guys. At Elizapalooza I had an idea to use a photocopier with the guys all crammed over it and the bright light shooting out of it somehow symbolising something overtly sexual, but i couldn't get the copier to function with the lid open, so there goes that idea.

Opening some closed doors, I found a hallway with a bookcase containing pamphlets relating to parental guidance for teens on all manner of topics including (most importantly) sexual matters. If I could pull the bookcase forward, shove the guys heads in from behind and add some alcohol to the mix we may just have a shot...

The guys were stoked with the idea and after a quick set up and positioning of the props we were shooting. 5 or 6 shots later and we had the keeper.

Check Hons' face! Classic. The binder book on the right reads: Parents, Teens And Boundaries, How To Draw The Line - which is a song title right there!!

Gomez played the Gov for the 2nd time this year, this time delivering a bunch of new tracks from their latest album "A New Tide" plus a good mix of the old favourites to a near capacity crowd.

Was kinda bummed that Ben Ottewell wore the exact same flanno - it meant this set of photos could be confused for the other set I took earlier this year!

With a set list that would give any die-hard You Am I fan a massive stiffy (myself included) You Am I rocked the Gov like it was 1996 all over again. Tim Rogers introduced early You Am I numbers such as "Sound As Ever" & "Forever & Easy" indicating it was high time they were played again. Much to the crowds delight, even the brilliant "Embarrassed" got a running.

Opening proceedings with a rare cover of Regurgitator's (I Sucked A Lot Of Cock) To Get Where I Am, the sarcasm and wit was clearly set to full swing, more than likely spurred on by a vast quantity of alcoholic beverages consumed before the show.

Paying homage to the recently departed Magic Dirt bassplayer Dean Turner, they launched into a version of Magic Dirt's "Ice" back announcing it as for "my little sister, who has had a real fu***en sh**ter of a month"

"Gasoline For Two" from the Idiot Box soundtrack took me by surprise - not a track I've seen played live before, although "Cat's & Dogs" got a royal applause. And rightly so!

I've seen a number of You Am I shows over the years and I can easily say this show is one of, if not, the best I've ever seen. Incredible stuff.

Home shows for the Hilltop Hoods are a special occasion. There's something in the air, a unique connection between what's happening onstage and what's going on with the audience. It's almost as if the fans "own" the Hoods and this show is theirs. With families and friends also in attendance, the mood before the show was akin to a Christmas relo bash, but instead of Aunty Flo's slow cooked turkey, we were set to feast on some of the worlds best hip hop.

And feast we did.

The Hilltop Hoods have their show perfected, hitting every nail square on the head. The set didn't slow for even one song.

The lighting tonight was spot on the entire show, making my job a complete breeze. It's pretty handy having access to the lighting technician - by knowing the songs and what the lights are planning on doing I was able to set up shots based on the lights. You only get lighting like this with a well versed technician and the Hoods have their man and they travel with him everywhere. And it shows. ...

I intend to put in some time trying to learn one with decent capabilities, so I'd prefer something that didn't stick to the sheet music format.

Bathory was a viking metal band from Sweden, originally started as a black/thrash metal project by one man, Quorthon, in mid 80's, who died in 2004 from a heart failure.

Nordland I (there is also II), is a great viking metal album. The songs are about, well, vikings and Scandinavian folklore. This is also a great album for those of you who don't really like metal, but would like to try. The songs are not aggressive, at least that's my opinion, and the beautifully written lyrical theme is very interesting.
Bathory's music is a must for any metal fan out there.

Music : Can anyone give me info on an Ibanez RG w/inverted headstock

I just picked up this ibanez RG a few days ago, its a '95 and was made at fujigen, but I have no idea what model it is - Can anyone help me?

As I said before, it was made in '95 at Fujigen.
As well as this, it has:
V8, S7 and V7 ibanez pickups (H-S-H configuration)
Licensed Floyd Rose, with locking nut etc.
Inverted (upside down) headstock
Plain dot fret inlays

The paint job is a bit weird too. It is black with barbed wire graphics under the clearcoat - looks factory.
All Iv been told is that the higher RG models were made at Fujigen in japan, and that they stopped making them with the inverted headstock about 10 years ago.

I know there is no info that can be had from the serial number other than production plant, year and build number - so I wont post it.

Music : MEGADETH - Endgame!

Last week, I bought the new Megadeth album, Endgame. I bought it the day it came out, took it home, and listened to it. I must admit that I was a little nervous because Megadeth's last album, United Abominations, wasn't too great, but I still decided to get it because I'm a Megadeth fan and they're one of my favorite bands (if not my all-time favorite).

This album ended up being an incredible album. This was their best album since Rust In Peace. In my opinion, if you're a metal fan, this is an album that you must listen to. The best songs are track one and three. Track one, called Dialectic Chaos, is a two and a half minute guitar solo. Track three, called 44 Minutes, is four and a half minutes of pure epicness.

Anyways... Has anyone else heard this album? I wanted to post it here because I wanted to know if it's just me that thinks that this is nothing short of incredible or if other people think that because it really is nothing short of incredible. ...

Two of metal's biggest names on the same bill?!! Megadeth and Slayer - almost seemed too good to be true! Well, for Adelaide punters it was. With Slayer cancelled due to illness on show day, Megadeth were left with the option of a longer set and the Slayer fans who were camped out the front of the Thebby all day were left pissed!

I was bummed, but knew the photography opportunities would be great either way!

Megadeth didn't disappoint! Some classic metal poses, facials and stances presented non-stop photo opps
