Sports : Thierry Henry Hand Ball....

If you follow soccer (football to everyone outside the US), then you have heard and seen the controversial score by France due to the blatant handball by Thierry Henry in the France/Ireland game on 18 November 2009. I don't think there is any question that Henry handled the ball on the play in question but I think this brings up a topic for discussion: official review.

For those that follow American football, you will have noticed the increased presence of official review of a play and the overturning of a ruling on the field. During the 2009 NFL season, I've noticed an increased usage of this option by the officials. While I get very excited when a ruling is overturned in my teams favor, I find myself frustrated with the disturbance this causes to the flow of a game. This incident with Henry could start a movement for official review of replays in international soccer. No doubt the officials were unable to see the hand ball but isn't that just part of playing a sport. Sometimes calls go in your favor and sometimes they don't. If you play sports long enough, eventually it all balances out.

I'm sure there will be some of you out there that demand justice and I'm all for it (especially in this case because justice would be against France ), but I think we should all keep in mind the possibility of instant replay becoming more common place in professional sports.

Sports : Chelsea v Manchester United

Manchester United will travel to Stamford Bridge this afternoon seeking their first win there in 6 years in row. As we know Chelsea is the EPL leaders while Man United is chasing them with Chelsea 2 points ahead.

The 3rd placed team is Arsenal, who won yesterday and is sitting just 2 points behind Chelsea.

Logically, Chelsea look strong and despite their loss to minnows, they conceded the least goals in the EPL, 8 goals so far.

Meanwhile, Man United are the defending Champions and are looking a good result there in London.

So, what do you think? Who do you think will win today?

As an Arsenal fan, I would like both of them to lose points. A draw would be cool so Arsenal (with a game on hand) would close the gab...

The Great 8, Alexander Ovechkin has now missed 4 games with an upper body injury, but the rest of the Capitals seem to have picked up the slack and they have almost not missed their superstar.

At the end of the day, a couple of weeks off might be just benefit him as an 82 game season can take its toll on the players bodies.

However, I suspect that the NHL itself misses his presence, perhaps more than the Capitals, certainly I feel sorry for teams who are visited only once this season by Washington who miss their one chance to see him play.

Personally, being based in the UK, I don't get to see live games.... but ESPN America appears to have a lot of Washington games on at the moment... presumably to highlight Ovechkin.

So... who do you think misses him most?

The 2009 alpine rally recently passed thru my area of the world (east gippsland, victoria, australia)

Great race to watch on some awesome bush tracks

Race was won by Geoff Portman in a VH Commodore , 2nd was Brad Goldsbrough in a Datsun 1600 and 3rd was Jeff David in a Porsche 911...Thats right, a Datsun beat the porsche, GO THE DATTO!

Penn is a great grappler, but his striking is underrated, and his all-around skills are the reason why he's the favorite in your offshore sportsbook.

Kenny Florian (11-3)
Florian has won his last six fights, four of which came by submission. Florian defeated former champion Joe Stevenson with a rear-naked choke at UFC 91 to become the No.1 contender for the lightweight crown. This is his second shot at the belt, as he lost to Sean Sherk back at UFC 64, but he hasn't lost since. Florian has admitted that he looks up to Penn, who is one of the top lightweights in the world, but he also realizes that to be the best, you have to be the best.

What Will Happen: UFC 101 odds have Penn as a -220 favorite in this main event, and this will be a matchup featuring two fighters who are well versed in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The difference could be in their strikes, as Penn has a boxing background to go with his excellent takedowns, while Florian is known to have some of the sharpest elbows in all of MMA once he gets his opponents down to the ground. Australia won a one-day series 4-2 on their previous visit two years ago.
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has said that the hosts (India) are a difficult side to beat at home.
As for Indians, batsman Yuvraj Singh, who missed the Champions Trophy with a broken finger, was named in the 15-player squad with the hope that he would be fit to start the seven-match series.
Indian will also miss pacer Zaheer Khan.
It is going to be a very interesting match.

Well, I wanted to post this several weeks ago, but I was keeping holding my horses because I was looking how the transfer market was going for Manchester United, and now it seems as though United is going to be uninterested by the big players.

As an Arsenal fan, I always disliked Manchester United more than I hate any other EPL club but Chelsea and Spurs. Not because they were keeping winning three years in raw, but because the way they play football and the way they still call their style of play

. And because they stopped us winning stuff...

But it seems they are going to struggle next year. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was (as everybody else knows) the key of their success who scored more than half of the goals that led Man United see great winnings in the least 4 years. He is off now to Real Madrid. Out of the EPL, and thats a great news.

Carlos Tevez, who was known as equalizer. Who used to bring Man United back into the game every time they were some goals behind is out, too. I hope he will end up in Man Citeh. He was great player, and I honestly liked him to see at Arsenal, but Arsenal has plenty of strikers and doesn't need him, I hope he will earn some of the huge money at Burj El-Manchester City.

Still in United's issue, having tons of EUROS earned from Ronaldo, they tracked a lot of great players including Benzema, Robin van Persie, Frank Ribery, Huntelaar and Pato, but none of them is interested in playing for Man United despite they won a lot of stuff, because nobody wants to play crap counter-attack based football.

What do you think?

So, what will Micheal Owen, Gabriel Obertan and Ontinio Valencia will do for United? I hope they will end up struggling for the Champions League position next year. ...

Bandy is played on ice, using a single round ball. Two teams of eleven players each compete to get the ball into the other team's goal using sticks, thereby scoring a goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game is the winner; if both teams have scored an equal number of goals, then the game is a draw. There are exceptions to this rule, however.

The primary rule is that the players (other than the goalkeepers) may not intentionally touch the ball with their heads, hands or arms during play. Although players usually use their sticks to move the ball around, they may use any part of their bodies other than their heads, hands or arms and may use their skates in a limited manner. Heading the ball will result in a five-minute penalty.

In typical game play, players attempt to propel the ball toward their opponents' goal through individual control of the ball, such as by dribbling, passing the ball to a team-mate, and by taking shots at the goal, which is guarded by the opposing goalkeeper. If the ball has left the field along the sidelines, the referee must decide which team touched the ball last, and award a restart stroke to the opposing team, just like football's throw-in.

In the first few years after college, I traveled a lot for my job and was blessed with the opportunity to spend several months in Europe on my employer's bill. While there I began discussing sports with my colleagues from the UK and we began creating a list of rules in defining a "Sport" vs a "Game".

A Sport vs a Game:

Our initial analysis (typically performed after work in a local pub) quickly ruled that to be a sport the event could not be classified as a board game. This quality quickly allowed us to agree that things like Chess or Monopoly were games not sports.

Being from the US and my colleagues being from the UK, we found that our primary disagreement usually involved cricket and baseball. These 2 events always caused us to argue extensively. My argument was that it couldn't be a sport because the players wore sweaters and the rules made no sense what-so-ever to me. They argued that baseball... well I don't remember their argument because they were wrong and I was typically drunk by then.

Anyway, I pose the question to you out there, what criteria do you use to determine if something is a game or a sport?

I'm very shocked with the news about Agassi.

I'm a very big fan of him and such a confession is certainly surprising. Among tennis players doping is considered such a wrong practice that I find it hard to believe that he's actually ruining he's reputation after such a successful career. I used to be an aspiring tennis player and he was an icon to me and most of the players my age.

What's even more surprising to me is the alternate hypothesis that's being rumored which states that all of this is just meant to generate fuzz around his (soon to be published?) autobiography. That would be even more shocking, I mean, is it worth to wreck your public image?

Some might say no publicity is bad publicity, but I can't help thinking they're wrong, at least when it comes to this particular case.

I'm surprised not many players moved teams. I especially thought that star pitcher Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays would be traded.

Jake Peavy went from the San Diego Padres to the Chicago White Sox.

Victor Martinez was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Boston Red Sox.

Scott Rollen was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays up the the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cleveland Indians traded their star pitcher Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jarrod Washburn went from the Seattle Mariners to the Detriot Tigers.

Orlando Cabrera was dealt from Oakland Athletics to the Minnesota Twins.
