I am using Windows XP. Last time when my computer got hanged and did not boot from next time, I thought of reinstalling Windows XP again.

I formated my C drive and installed Windows XP. Only after I successfully installed Windows, I came to know that I had insatlled it on D drive which is now formatted. I had lots of important documents and images all stored in D drive.

What to do now? Can I get those documents and images back? is there any way? Please help me

I'm not sure if there is actually a solution to this problem, but I figure it's worth asking.

So I moved files from a PC with Windows XP onto an external harddrive, this computer has since been formatted and pawned. Now the files are encrypted with no site of EFS or NTFS keys of any sort(I've been looking around for what's wrong with the files but I'm unfamiliar with the terms and how it works.) When trying to move the files onto my laptop (Vista) it says I do not have administrator privledges and cannot move them. I tried this with User Account Control on and off, I tried unchecking the "read only" property, I tried changing the security settings so I had full control, but it constantly goes back to "read only" The files won't open, delete, move, anything. The file name is also in green...I'm not sure what that means.

That's the situation so my question is: Does anyone have any idea if there is a way to decrypt files without the EFS/NTFS/keys etc?

PS ElcomSoft's "Advanced EFS Data Recovery" program did not find any keys in ANY of the drives either on my computer or the external drive.

Many of you are using Windows XP as your server's operating system, which is a good choice since it is rather stable and easy to use. Recently, Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP which includes a firewall for security purposes. This guide will show you how to configure the Windows XP firewall to run server programs.

You should only run one firewall on your server to avoid software conflicts and configuration confusion. If you already have an existing software firewall installed such as ZoneAlarm, then it is best if you go ahead and uninstall it. The Windows firewall is pretty good and can replace ZoneAlarm. Or conversely, if you choose to keep ZoneAlarm, you can simply not use the Windows firewall. It's your choice.

The goal of this guide is to open up ports so that your programs can talk to the Internet. In the Windows firewall, you can do this by either opening up specific ports or you can grant programs access. There are reasons to use either method. We'll cover both in this guide

Let's get started.

Start --> Settings --> Network Connections

when i turn on my computer, on desktop i couldn't find my task bar and any other icons which are supposed to present.
to enter into MY COMPUTER, the only thing i could do is through task manager-->run-->....................ofcourse by this way
i could do my normal work.
even i tried in control panel in which ""taskbar and start menu"" not opening there also.
i think there is something to do with regedit.
plzzzzzzzz give me some suggestions.

I've two different headsets which work, but on my newer PC, the mic doesn't work.

I've looked in the sounds, and seen the test where you read. I read, but it's like the mic isn't even connected. The headphones work on the other connection.

Realtek AC97 is the audio card which came with the box.

Hi, wonder if anyone can help me with my prob do not know what has caused it??? My com is a dell dimension desktop and I am running Windows XP home. The com is working fine other than the fact than when go to my computer and I right click on my local disk (C and go to properties the box that appears is now fully covered in blue and plus signs all over the box so that I cannot read the text properly (don't know how else to explain this,lol). Have done searches on the internet for answers but cannot find anything relating to this problem. It is very annoying as i cannot see for example how much disk space I have or anything else for that matter. I click the boxes on top e.g. tools, hardware, sharing etc and they all have the same problem. Please can someone help me out and put me out of my misery, Cheers!!!

I have a question I do know this has been discussed before, but I am having trouble with it.
here is what I have on my boot menu.
Vista.
XP
Mac OS
Vista works. I go to XP and get some crazy error. So. I want a smaller partition for vista.
(I do want to keep vista)
I want XP to be installed over the current vista installation.
I want it to be default. I want the XP's boot handler to be default.
I installed windows XP on a different partition and it messed everything up and it wouldn't even show up.
I'm really confused here.
I had to put my vista disk in and repair it to get the boot selection up.

I just want my system to be way faster. Vista runs surprisingly well. I just want it faster.
I have 2GB of ram and a duo core AMD Turion 64X 1.90Ghz.

worst ISP ever!

How can i file a complaint to the my ISP so they can maybe try to do something about this problem?
my internet messes up almost every day.
by messes up I don't mean has a major slow down i mean completely stop working.
my dad has college work he has to do... and it's online.
I will be looking for stuff about college or talking to people or posting on this forum.
then BAM all the sudden. this page cannot be displayed.
it happens every night different times.
sometimes it goes hours without working...
i haven't ever had an ISP with service this awful.
i looked at the bill just to see the rates were raised just for 1.5MB internet. no hosting or anything just high speed cable.
60$ a month.
for that price it shouldn't mess up all the time really.
I am only posting right now because I picked up someone elses wifi i have no idea whose it is.
how could I go about filing a complaint though?
I hate to do it... but something has to be done.

bad thing is.... I live in a really small town =[
nothing else is available here.... it sucks.

When I want to turn of my laptop via Alt + F4 it always comes by default on selection sleep mode.
Isn't it possible to have this come by default on Turn off so i just have to do Alt + F4 and press enter to turn of the laptop.

I am having problems with my scheduled task on Server 2003. It is a disc cleanup, and it is supposed to run everyday at 2 AM in the morning. The task was running fine until I added more tasks, but at different days at different times.

Here is some information:

Run: C:\WINDOWS.1\system32\cleanmgr.exe /d D: /sagerun:50
Start in: C:\WINDOWS.1\system32
Run as: HOTELMARIO\SilverdaleA (password set)

Task will stop after 10 minutes if something fails. Under security I have:

Administrator (HOTELMARIO\Administrator)
Administrators (HOTELMARIO\Administrators)
Keith Black (SilverdaleA@hotelmario.info)
SYSTEM

Everybody has "full" control. SilverdaleA is a under the Administrator group. Why do you think that Disc Cleanup has failed to start, and failed to delete temp files as well as recycling bin items?

I installed apache on my computer. When I set it up, and typed "http://localhost" in my browser url location bar, I got a message saying apache was set up correctly.

But, when I typed in my IP address, I got a "server not found" error.
I tried setting up a subdomain on DynDns with it pointing to my IP for the heck of it, and it doesn't work either.

I started using SUSE 10.2 and realised that in GNOME, there is no PDF virtual printer.

Is there a place I can get some rpm download to install a PDF printer?

As I move along, I started to realised how rich a freeware supply of tools are there on the Internet for WIn XP/2000/2003 but so limited for Linux.

Yes, I do wish to go fully Linux, but with such limited set of tools available on the Internet, I do have to consider carefully how I can live without Windows OS.

Anyway - can someone help me out with a pdf printer for SUSE?

A strange thing has been happening recently with Excel 2007 on my PC (Windows XP SP2).

If I open Excel and then double-click on an Excel document in Windows Explorer, both the program and the document open instantaneously.

However, if I double-click on an Excel document

opening Excel, then it takes a whole minute for the document to appear!

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here, and how to fix it?

Hello All

I have this PC which often boots with a blank screen. This problem has been around on and off ever since the PC was bought (over 2 years ago!). I took it back to the supplier on a number of occasions whilst it was under guarantee. Practically everything has been replaced, most notably the TFT display, the display adapter and (most recently) the motherboard.

After this last repair the machine worked fine for a few months, but now the problem is back again!

I've noticed two curious features related to this problem;
- The noise of the fan reduces a few seconds after switching on when the PC starts OK (with the screen working), but not when the screen remains blank.
- When the PC starts up with a blank screen, the PC often emits a series of beeps a few moments after being switched on.

Some Technical details about the PC:
Motherboard: Intel D915GAV
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 540 3.2 GHz, 800MHz, 1MB, Socket 775
Video adapter: Chaintech SE6600 256MB DDR PCI-Express (Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT)
OS: MS Windows XP SP2
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 710V (TFT Monitor) ()

I would be really grateful for any ideas on how to solve this one.

I've been trying to install vmware tools on a virtual open suse 10.3 machine with kde, but I have a problem. I need to run the vmware-tools.pl script to finish the installation. When I go to it with a file manager, I only get the option to edit it, not to run it. When I go to the appropriate folder with the terminal and type in the file name, it just tells me 'command not found', even though that is exactly how I ran a similar script in suse 9... What's up with that?

The two theories I have:
1: I need to install something in order to run perl scripts
2: I need to use a special command in the terminal and give the file name as an argument to that command in order to execute the script.

Either way, I don't know precisely what to install/use.
(And yes, I am trying to run it as root)

I have many old desktop computers around my house. It's starting to get to a point where I really need to start doing something with them, as they're just sitting around here doing nothing, and taking up so much room.

What options do I have with these machines ? I'd like to keep all of my modern computers (preferrably Pentium 3 and above) but I got an array of Pentium 2 and older computers, with monitors, keyboards, mice, and other sort of equipment to go along with them.

From what I've gathered, I have these choices :

- Donate them to the Salvation Army thrift stores, where they can be resold.
- Sell them on Craigslist (as older computers don't seem to be highly priced on eBay).
- Give them away for free on Craigslist to someone who really needs a computer to use.
- Since I'm in the Chicagoland area, they have something here called "Free Geek Chicago". I can donate to them, but I'll have to pay a fee because they have to process it to give their donated machines away to volunteers. I might consider doing that, but it's like $15.00 to donate a monitor or a tower. I would donate to them if it didn't cost.

I'd prefer not to give them to the Salvation Army, because I want these machines to be put to good use and given a second life. I've gotten most of my older computers by picking them out of the garabage, I didn't really buy them. Of course, my modern computers I have bought.

The reason on why I'd prefer not to give them to the Salvation Army is because they trash a lot of the older stuff, they don't even recycle it, and only consider selling the ones that are at least "modern". I want these things to be reused and not trashed or recycled, if you can get what I mean.

Can anyone else gather any other suggestions ? Much thanks ahead of time.

(I do have a couple of my modern machines, mostly Pentium 2's and above doing work for Seti@Home, for research. ...

Linux XviD DVD Encoding Guide

This is one of many things people do not know how to do with Linux, and most revert to Windows or use virtualization software with reduced performance. There is alot of software to choose from, but finding the easiest/quickest is the aim here.

Please do NOT be frightened to use the tovid command-line over the GUI.

To begin, you'll need this tovid-0.30.tar.gz tarball, it contains everything you need to run tovid.
You may also want to install avimerge so you can merge 2CD XviD's into one file.

Assuming the saved item is located on the desktop you can install with the following commands:

tar -xzvf tovid-0.30.tar.gz
cd tovid-0.30
./configure
su -c "make install" (Ubuntu users use: sudo make install)

Now that we have tovid installed everything onwards is quite simple and user-specific.
The following explains the most popular tovid parameters, you can view all parameters by typing "man tovid" in the terminal.

-ffmpeg - Use ffmpeg for encoding, instead of mplayer/mpeg2enc. Quicker encoding than mpeg2enc.

TV Standards:
-ntsc - NTSC format video (USA, America) (default if not specified)

-ntscfilm - NTSC-film format video

-pal - PAL format video (Europe and others)

Output Formats:
-dvd (720x480 NTSC, 720x576 PAL) DVD-compatible output (default if not specified)

-svcd (480x480 NTSC, 480x576 PAL) Super VideoCD-compatible output

-vcd (352x240 NTSC, 352x288 PAL) VideoCD-compatible output

Aspect Ratio:
tovid automatically determines aspect ratio of the input video by playing it in mplayer.
You can force AR with this parameters:

-full - Same as -aspect 4:3

-wide - Same as -aspect 16:9

-panavision - Same as -aspect 235:100

-aspect WIDTH:HEIGHT - Custom aspect ratio.

Quality:
Affects both output bitrate and quantization. Default is 8 (Personally I use 10)

-quality # - Output quality on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 giving the best quality at the expense of a larger output file.

-vbitrate <amount> - Maximum bitrate to use for video in kbits/sec. Ignored for VCD. (Must be constant)

-abitrate <amount> - Encode audio at <amount> kbits/sec. Ignored for VCD. (must be 224)

Subtitles:
-autosubs - Automatically include subtitle files with the same name as the input video.

-subtitles <file> - Hard-codes the subtitles into the video. (Subs cannot be disabled)

This is an example of basic DVD creation:

This will encode the file1.avi in the working directory (Desktop) and convert it to dvd-compliant video.

This creates an xml file to author the disc.

makedvd "DVD1"

This reads data from the XML file and creates the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, with IFO's BUP's, VOB's etc located in the VIDEO_TS folder. You can then burn this to disc!

For batch conversions:

tovid-batch -pal -ffmpeg -autosubs -vbitrate 6000 -abitrate 448 -quality 10 -dvd -infiles *.avi -out *.mpg

This will take any avi files in the working directory and convert them to mpeg video files.
You can then repeat the makexml & makedvd steps above for each video file.

Hello! I think this is my third post about the problems I am experiencing with Vista but this time, I searching EVERYWHERE and I'm sick of this ******* crap.

So let's start, I got a pretty good computer at xmas and it was coming with Vista installed on it. I got 3GB of RAM and a 2.2 Dual Core processor from Intel. So there's my problem : My computer is lagging every 30 seconds (this is the average time, it could be every 1 minute, it's always different). It's lagging everything, if I list a song, the song will play in "slow motion" for 0.5 second, same with videos and etc. I am also a big gamer, I love online shooters and I normaly play everyday. Since I have Vista, I can't play anymore, I still have a great ping (9 in most us server and I'm from Canada!) but every 30 seconds, I lag, my game freeze, simple as that. Every 30 seconds I die, I play a zombie game? I won't freeze if it's clear, I will freeze WHEN I will meet the damn zombie! Vista makes me sick, I searched everywhere on the web and I found dozen of problems like me but nothing is helping. ...

recently ive been having an issue in regards to ejecting my flash drives. whenever i'd go to remove storage safely i will always get a message telling me that it cant do it and somethings accessing it. is there some freeware that i can use to determine what is accessing my thumb drives so i can stop it and in turn safely remove my thumbdrives from my computer

First of all go to

1)Navigate to START → Settings → Control Panel.
2)Double click on Regional and Language Options, if you are in Classic View. click on Language and Regional Options, then click on Regional Options.

3)Click on the Customize
4)Click on the time tab

5)Replace the AM and PM with your first name.
6)Click on Apply.
7)Click on OK.
8)Close the Regional and Language Options window.

Ok.. here's the issue. We have a Dell D600 that we are going to send with my mother while she's in Spokane for a week. This is a weird one, so bear with me:

If the Dell shuts down, you can not restart it...

unless

... you hold the Reset button and hit the Power button at the precise moment. You have to be exact on this or it won't start. This is repeatable everytime you have to restart the laptop. It is not acting like a short in any way.

Once it starts, it's fine and happy.

EDIT:
I should add that it works fine on restart. It's ONLY when it's power off that this issue occurs. ...

Hi i have the "HP Media Center m7160n Desktop PC" and currently i just reformatted my system. After i reformatted i tried connecting to the internet and i kept on getting an error. So i went to device manager and noticed that my ethernet controller is not recognized and that the driver needs to be updated. but to do that i need to connect to the internet. So if anyone can help me out with what to do that would be very helpful. (and i bought my system almost 2 years ago so i don't have the recovery disk anymore).

okay so today i bought a new geforce 7300 AGP with built in heat sink fan, and its idle temp is 80c and when im running a game it shoots up to 119c does anyone know what i can do, my old geforce 6200 used to idle at 45c and that had a plain no fan aluminium heat sink.

I'm using win xp. If this kind of problem happened : I can start the laptop, click on my user icon, type in my password, and that's it. It says "loading personal settings" and it just stops there. My mouse doesn't freeze or anything.

Other info: It can load into safe mode environment.

My other laptop and desktop computer have the same settings as the problematic laptop.
Any suggestions what might be the problem?

I am trying to set up a wiki. I have tried a couple of times to set phpwiki up manually, but I am unable to get everything right at the same time. Would someone be nice enough to enlighten me?

How do I set up mysql correctly, and then how do I call the database within my config.ini?

I have tried to fiind information in the forums, but it is either dependent on fantasico, which as far as I can tell is not supported on server 2 or it is treated flippantly. I am caught in between. I want to set it up. I would love to know how to do it manually, but will power alone has not been enough... any resources, comments, or guidance would be most welcome.

my pdf document has a problem. It doesn't appear like a pdf document although Acrobat reader 5.0 is installed on my computer. And wen i want to print it, i click on it, windows ask me which progrm to use. I select adobe, it opens the document. All the document is visible, but when i want to print now, it stops at page 15. I even wanted to print from 15 to the end but with no success. Help me to print it please.

Hello,

I actually have four cathodes lights and 1 LED fan to do some tuning with my computer and I was wondering if my power supply would support them. My Psu is only 320w and I have a 400GB Sata HD, 3GB of RAM, 2.2gHz dual core Intel (processor) and a 8500 GT (nvidia, graphic card). I asked some of my friends and they said that 320w was already not enought to run what I already have in my computer but I wanted to get the opinion of more person so please reply if you have some knowledge with computer tuning/Power Supply, etc.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 3070MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
Total Space: 381.6 GB

Ok here's one for you...

My brother has a fujitsu siemens SCALEO P. The problem is it won't boot from cd...

I have already tried the following to solve this but with no luck...

1. Cleaned Windows Xp disk
2. Checked Bios setting to ensure Boot Piority setting is on 'First Boot Device' = CD Drive
3. Checked DVD Drive connecting strap for doggy connection
4. Replaced connecting strap
5. Replaced DVD Drive
6. Reset Bios to 'Fail Safe Defaults' then checked first boot device = cd drive
7. Cleared Cmos, checked first boot device = cd drive

I had brought my DVD drive from back home and installed it in a computer that I'm workig on right now. Its a Celeron 500Mhz machine. Now whenever I start my computer I get the msg

"Primary slave drive - ATAPI incompatible"

. Can anyone please let me know what does it mean and how to get around it. Right now the DVD drive is the only one that is connected. No other CD ROM. ANd the DVD drive is workig fine too.
Btw my DVD drive is a Sony DVD RW, if its of any importance.

I've googled this problem and found some help that hasn't worked yet:
uninstall software
download & run a software cleaner (not for 750 tho),
install driver again (not just 750 tho, something more generic)

HP printer still says scanner failure and usually doesn't print.

Help would be appreciated.

I have a Samsung X60+ notebook which i perchased about 12 months ago, its a great machine but for some reason recently when i try to burn a DVD using nero or any other app it seems to take for ever. For example burnt 4.4GB to a DVD the other day nero's estimated time was 8 mins, nero's counter counted down and reached "0 mins remaining" yet the progress bar was only a quarter complete! it took around 40 mins in total!!! I have tried re-installing nero, i have flashed the firmware in the drive to the newest version, but still SLOOOOOWWWWW!
The other interesting thing is that i have duel boot with linux on the same machine, using K3B (a CD/DVD burning tool for unix based systems) i have no problems at all, which is not suprising because linux is a great OS.
It all seems to point to a problem with Windows.

Any ideas anyone?
