Computer Problems and Support : Windows XP randomly locking up

Hello,

In the past week, my Windows XP install has been locking up randomly with the only solution being to pull the plug on the power. This has occurred twice while playing Half Life 2: Episode One, and three times while browsing the web with Firefox - even when doing mundane stuff like using Google.

I have not install anything recently, and all my virus software is up to date. I've scanned my computer using a number of different programs (Ad-Aware Pro, Spybot, Super Anti Spyware, Trend Micro) and I'm fairly sure it isn't a virus.

Hi,

For the last few days my monitor has been having some problem..when I started the computer, the monitor image was at the top (like the last image in the post). I checked all the connections, and thought the problem had gone away. It reappears when I shake the monitor, or hit on the desk, the problem reappears. Here are some screenshots :

I had brought a new Dell Studio 15 laptop with 4GB RAM and 500 GB hard disk hoping a lot and expecting a lot..!! I had thought a 4 GB RAM would give me a very good speed..!! But the system doesn't give me the speed even as much as a 1 GB system gives, which i have in my workplace..!! The most sad thing is that the CD drive is the worst and it doesn't even play some cd's and if i try to play them the system hangs and the final solution is to do hard booting..!!

Dell has cheated me and i had sent a email to their support email id and i didn't get any response till now..!! Is there any other way in which i could get support..??

If you guys know any other way please help me out..!!

I try to play Call of Duty 4 but my keyboard stops the game.
I try to look after this problem on the forums and they say that the game is stopping because my keyboard is not USB.
Well, there is a way to "convert" my PS/2 to USB?
I bought and tried some kind of cheap adapter but the keyboard (USB now) is not recognised by the computer. I plugged the mouse instead - no result.
I think I bought the cheapest piece of ***t and I ask now: Do you now a REAL adapter who can help me to get an USB keyboard from PS/2 plug?

I know there are several posting here related to improving computer performance and I've read all that I can find. I obtained a laptop from my sister that is several years old. Here are some basic specs on the machine:
Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition
AMD Turion (tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-34
1.79 Ghz - 448 MB RAM

I have performed the following steps since I obtained the machine to try and improve its performance:
- Installed and run SUPER AntiSpiware
- Installed Firefox
- Defraged the harddrive
- Installed McAfee virus protection
- Installed and run HijackThis and MSCONFIG
- Uninstalled unnecessary applications

I'd like to avoid formatting the machine and re-installing everything. Any advice would be a great help![/list][/list]

Hi all, hoping you will be able to help me out because this is driving me crazy!

I'm trying to set up Mozilla Thunderbird to send/receive my webmail, now I can receive emails coming in on port 110 but I can't send out any emails (sending on port 80).

I am assuming my router (D-Link DIR-300) is blocking port 80 and not letting any e-mails go out.

Well anyways, I have brought up the D-Link advanced config menu, selected SMTP as application type, which then puts 25~25 into the public port section and then choosing the computer name adds this computers IP address and adds 25~25 into the private port and TCP as the traffic type.

Does this sound about right, should I just change the Thunderbird settings to port 25 rather than port 80? and how safe is adding this as an exception to my router?

Computer not booting

I seem to have a very wierd problem. Searched for it quite a bit on google but didn't see anyone else with the same problem.

I simply cannot boot into any OS from my machine at all!

The BIOS seems ok, the bios is also passing over to the operating system's boot sequence allright, but as soon as the operating system takes over from the BIOS and starts loading its own files, it simply hangs there.
I'm primarily using Windows XP Pro, so it hangs on the XP splash screen. I tried booting into safe mode, but it hangs on the screen where all the XP drivers are loaded.
Even tried booting from DVDs into different OS versions on the Ultimate Boot CD, but get the same problem, so my OS installation on the hard drive is not corrupted, and neither are my harddrives or optical drives. Also tried booting into Linux from a BackTrack 3 DVD, but get the same problem. Only it hangs on the Linux/BT3 splash screen this time.

I think this is a hardware problem with either the motherboard or the processor, but cannot be sure, since otherwise the system would not even have passed POST.

I think my memory modules are allright since I ran a memcheck utility from the Ultimate Boot CD and it showd my memory to be fine.

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong here?

I have set up Cerberus FTP server on my computer. I have a wireless router (DSL-G604T). I have configured the router to forward FTP protocols to my computer. I can access my FTP Server from within my LAN connections (e.g if I connect to ftp://10.1.1.2) it works. But when I try from an external connection (e.g ftp://myserver.com/), I get the following error from IE.

Window can't access this folder.
Make sure you type in the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Please assist me.

Guys,my pc was attacked by win 32 sality virus and trojan horses..
i downloaded the avg sality virus removal tool but most of those affected files were already deleted by avg antivirus.

Every time I start my computer running Windows XP, I get the following message:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSit.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

The problem is, I have deleted WinSit.exe because my Norton Antivirus detected it as a virus or malware. Now Windows is always looking for it at startup. Anyone know how to disable this?

Anyone know what that file is for and if I need it?

I am currently using 32-bit vista and i have 4gb of memory, the problem is approx. 1gb of memory is wasted because there are 2^32=4gb unique adress space available and MMIO reserves some of the this space depending on which devices you use , I was searching a solution for this problem and i found that there is a feature called Physical Address Extension(PAE) developed by microsoft. By using this feature, 32-bit systems can use more than 4gb of memory.
For people having the same problem here is the solution.

The Operating System that supports PAE are:
Windows Server 2008 (32-bit only)
Windows Vista (32-bit only)
Windows Server 2003 (32-bit only)
Windows XP (32-bit only)
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server

if you have one of the operating systems above, you just have to enable the feature because it is disabled by default. To enable it:

click Start, click Run, type cmd
and type "BCDEdit /set PAE forceenable" in the command line

I am now running Windows 7 evaluation version and it is in a network of 40 computers..!! A HP Laserjet 1022 printer is connected to a system..!! I want to connect it from my system running Windows 7 and directly give printouts through LAN..!!

I got a new laptop with vista (I can upgrade it for little to windows 7) but right now i want to play team forttres 2. But even before the game starts it says:
"hl2.exe has stopped working"
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Of course i never get a solution kinda pissing me off, does anyone know a way to solve it?

I left my computer on overnight recently. In the morning I turned it off at the computer powerswitch. When I next turned it on it went into checkdisk mode after a minute or so, as expected (:C, Fat32). After completing this it rebooted and then asked which mode I wanted to start it in. I selected normal but after going to the XP logo startup page it soon went into checkdisk mode again. I ignored this and it rebooted again. This time I selected safe mode but it just showed a page of data (multidisk/rdisk/partition1/Windows/System32/Drivers....) and froze. I tried last good session option but it still keeps checkdisking.
How can I get it out of this vicious cycle. I do not have a windows cd.

Hi!
Since we have a lot of FileZilla Client users in here, there might be some FileZilla server users too.

I successfully setup my home wireless network, through which I can swap files from one computer to another here in my home. I just set some users in the FileZilla server interface and connect via the internal network ip address, that one that begins with 192.168.x.x.

But, what if I need to use my laptop to download, from school, some file that is in my desktop at home?

But after some time virus from my friend's pendrive and other infected cd\dvds ran into my computer and made it really slow.I have two drives and i thought of put os windows xp on d: and put a antivirus in it and remove viruses of c: so that my orginal vista remains. But on installing xp vista is gone. it does not ask any thing and starts vista automatically. So what im thinking of is changing bootini's content and that i don't have. so if you have content of boot.ini of vista would you mind posting it ?It would be of great help.

this problem with my computer has been happening for at least a year. I keep getting a blue screen of death. This happens randomly. Sometimes it's as soon as windows loads and i see the desktop, other times it's during webbrowing. it's random.

i don't think it's a virus.

the code error i get is:

0x0000008E (0xC0000005,...

the next parameter changes sometimes.

Often it is:
0x00000049 or 0x00000055

sometimes it's a random mix of numbers and letters.

All i could find on the internet was that this means that:
0x8E = KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
0xC0000005 = STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION: A memory access violation occurred.

Parameter 2 (the exception address) should pinpoint the driver or function that caused this problem.

Hi,

It's been a few days I've been noticing static coming from my speakers. Today, I saw that the left speaker is not working. I have a Creative 2.1 370 speakers. The cord from the PC comes to the subwoofer, and from there, two cords go to the left and right ones. I tried switching the two ports, and the left speaker started working, and the right one stopped, so it is not a problem with the speaker itself. Yes, I have tried changing the balance setting in Control Panel.

Another odd thing is that, if I leave the left one plugged on, with the right one not, there is sound coming from the left one (good sound, without any problems) but the volume of the sound coming is very low. And when I plug in the right one, this sound disappears.

Any idea what might have caused this problem and any way to resolve it? I guess it is some problem with the left speaker port in the subwoofer?

I'm having a problem because i don't know if i should get a new computer case or if i should just stay with my original case.

Well my problem is that i recently bought a Geforce 9600 GSO graphics card which is about 24cms and my computer case is about 37 cms long. But the thing is that when i try to replace my original graphics card (Geforce 7300) it doesn't seem to fit because my dvd drive takes about 10 cms.
So my question is should i install my graphics card without getting a new computer case? or should i just buy a new computer case?

Ok so i got a gateway gt5662 desktop pc. Came with AMD Phenom 9500 quad core processor, 500gb hd, 3gb ram, and an ATI Radeon 2400xt vid card. I wanna upgrade my video card without havin 2 dump a bunch of money on a new one. I dont need something crazy powerful just something that is better than the one I currently have and that will run the new games like Crysis and COD5 and stuff like that. I know the ATI cards are pretty expensive with the best one they have costing me more than I payed for my damn PS3. lol. Anyways does anyone have any suggestions as to a good video card that is pretty powrfull yet relatively cheap? I'm not looking to spend any more than like $150. Im so frustrated! I have a Gateway GT5662 desktop pc standard with 3gb ram, 500gb hd, AMD phenom 9500 quad core processor, ATI Radeon hd2400xt vc, and windows vista home edition 32 bit os. Anyways I decided to grab a 1g ram stick and replaced one of my 512mb modules with the 1gb module to give my system a total of 3.5 gb ram instead of the standard 3gb. Well I open up the pc swap the modules put it back together and fired it up. Well the gateway start screen pops up and then you see the little load bar "the screen right b4 it prompts you to enter your password" and then BAM! My monitor says no signal. I use my 32" hd tv as my monitor and I hook it up with a hdmi cable using an adapter that came with my video card. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all video drivers still with no luck. I have never had a problem b4 I added the extra ram. I took the ram out even and replaced all default modules with still no luck. ...

One my friend is having a transcend 2 GB pen drive, which is having some problem while connecting to my machine. It is not detecting; but in his machine it is working fine. Having been away from home for a few weeks i was not overly surprised to find my girlfriends computer had strangely gone wrong .....again this time when the system begins to boot i get the dredded 'NTLDR missing' error, i have come across this error more than once and have mamnaged to recover from this by doing copying the NTLDR file from the windows install CD and running 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' form the awful windows recovery console. however this time i seem to have hit a dead end as i am still getting the same error even after the above fix. Obviously i can reinstall windowz again but i only want to do this as a last resort. Any ideas what could be going on here?

I recently bought a new laptop. It's about a month old now.
Today, I "tripped" over my power cord, and disconnected it. Then, a popup showed up saying that I had 3% of battery left. O.o

I took the battery out, cleaned it, and put it back in.
Now the laptop can't find the battery at all.

But when I unplug the AC power, the laptop still works fine...

This is an HP Pavililon dv4-1020us
And it was an open display product, if that helps.

And on a side note, the touch button for the mute button doesn't work anymore.

I have an IBM Thinkpad laptop with XP Home SP3. I'm trying to free up disk space on the hard drive, so I recently downloaded Treesize to determine what could be removed. I got rid of some stuff, but there are two things I can't remove. One is "MSN Gaming Zone", which I don't think I even knew I had; it's 8.4MB large and located in C:\Programs. I looked on the internet and it said to remove via the "Add/Remove Programs" method, but it doesn't show up in the list of programs. I also looked through the folders associated with this program(s) but couldn't find anything named uninstall. A long time ago I did remove various $Ntuninstall...$ files from the C:\Windows directory; I thought I was being careful but did I remove one I now need? What's the best way to proceed in this case?
The other thing I want remove is called "MSN", also in C:\Programs; it's 20.7MB large. It's basically the same situation as above.

I've recently run into a problem with firefox. For some reason, it's unable to load some pages that it could before, but IE still loads them just fine. It was mainly things like gmail that I didn't use all that often, but today it's spread to the youtube login (it logged me out for some reason as well). I tried reinstalling, but that didn't do anything to help. I had a similar problem about a year ago, right before we formatted our drive and reinstalled windows, which fixed the problem temporarily. Anyone know of another fix?

I don't know much about computers so please reply in 'layman' language.

I'm not yet online (using my work station at the moment). I've had an error message a couple of times when logging onto windows but didn't know what to do so ignored it

Now on booting the computer says Prime Slave not detected (not sure if this is relevant).

When it gets to the windows welcome screen it goes blank then tells me 'no signal'.
