I'm getting to the internet through a wifi hot spot, and it was working "well enough" before, but all at one time, my e-mail program (thunderbird) and my torrent downloaders (FDM and bittorrent) stop working entirely. The torrents simply fail to connect to the trackers, and the e-mail gives me an error message saying "connecting to the server failed: server replied: ". My best theory is that the wifi hot spot I'm using has blocked additional ports on their firewall. Does anybody here know some software I could use to determine what the hot spot will allow and not allow for incoming/outgoing traffic?

I'm going to try a completely different hot spot in 3 days, to see if that solves the problem, in which case I'll complain to the people who run this hot spot (and charge me for it).

BGoogle has launched a Linux version of Google Desktop. The beta of Google Desktop for Linux -- the application, designed for indexing and finding data in PCs, as well as for searching the web comes three years after the product's launch for the Windows operating system.

Google Desktop allows people to search the Web while also searching the full text of all the information on their PC, including Gmail and their Web search history. Since the index is stored locally on the computer, users can access Gmail and Web history while offline as well. The version can also find previous versions of files or recover those that have been accidentally deleted.

Presently, Google Desktop for Linux does not feature the Sidebar and Gadget features which are there in the Windows version. Gadgets are mini-applications that display things such as e-mail, weather data, photos and news on the desktop, while Sidebar is a vertical panel where the Gadgets can be organised.

According to company spokesperson, Google Desktop for Linux uses Google's own desktop search algorithms, instead of the existing Linux search applications such as Beagle.

Only computers with x86 processors can use the software. It supports the Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, Novell Suse 10.1 and Red Flag 5 versions of Linux, and uses either the KDE or GNOME graphical user interfaces.

Although Google has released other projects as open-source software, where they can be freely modified and redistributed by anyone, Google Desktop for Linux is proprietary. The software was developed by the company's Beijing engineering team and is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese.

Google also offers Linux versions of its Picasa photo-editing software, as well as Google Earth and Google Toolbar for Firefox.

Google has not given a release date for the final version of the software.

Okay, maybe sync isn't the correct term but bare with me here.

I have a folder (folder A_) on my c drive and the same folder (folder B_) on my usb. Whenever I make a slight change to folder 'A' I have to make that same slight change to folder 'B' (it's a folder of all the typed up documents so it's constantly changed btw).

I want it so that once I make a change on folder 'A', folder 'B' will do the same change. I also want it so that even if my usb is not attached to the comp, it will make that slight change when I plug it in automatically.

Is something like that possible? A program? A marco perhaps?

It will be best to be freeware or low cost.

Capture some video at 1280x720 (720p) format, but using the supplied Video editor ULead only produce output of lower pixel output.

So if you have tried some video editors that is able to support all the HD format, please let me know.

Does it? I'd assume it would if something new pops up which wasn't there previously. For example, an ad or a post/reply. I'm using opera at the moment (just downloaded it a couple hours ago) and there's a function where you can choose it to reload a page every 5 seconds/10 seconds etc etc.

I have run into problems where I have lot all of my emails in the past and I really regret not backing them up so I thought I would let everyone here know how to do it because its a big life saver if anything ever does happen.

Copy Mail Files to a Backup Folder
To make a backup copy of your Outlook Express e-mail message files:

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
Select the folder location, and then press CTRL+C to copy the location.
Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.
Right-click any empty space on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
Type mail backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.
Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
On the Edit menu, click Paste.
Close the Mail Backup window.
Export Your Outlook Express Address

On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address .
Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
Click Browse.
Locate the Mail Backup folder that you created.
In the File Name box, type address backup, and then click Save.
Click Next.
Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
Click OK and then click Close.

Export the Mail Setting Account to a File
To make a backup copy of your Outlook Express mail account:

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On the Mail tab, click the mail account that you want to export, and then click Export.
In the Save In box, locate the Mail Backup folder on your desktop, and then click Save.
Repeat these steps for each mail account that you want to export.
Click Close.

Export the Newsgroup Settings Account to a File
To make a backup copy of your Outlook Express news accounts:

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On the News tab, click the news account that you want to export, and then click Export.
In the Save In box, use locate the Mail Backup folder on your desktop, and then click Save.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the Save In box, change the location to your desktop.

A few months ago I read an article stating that it is known that three malware programs managed to get installed in Macs.

I don't know about that story that there's no serious virus threats for Mac, but my kids computer, running MacOS Leopard, is behaving funny. One of their accounts simply disapeared. I tried to recreate it, but it doesn't show up. And they are complaining about it is being slower than it used to be.

I beleive that phishing also attacs Mac computers, but it's impossible to control every site my kids will click on. They have school research to do and I can't block search sites (like Google) and can't possibly know all the risky sites around.

I know a few paid antivirus, but would like to try out a good free one, if available.

So, I'm considering buying a copy of rosetta stone, since I want to learn another language. Possibly Japanese , Russian , German or maybe even Latin... However;

I want to know, has anyone had the opportunity to try it, and had success with it? Or, alternatively,
has anyone learned a second language WITHOUT Rosetta, and have some strategies that they could share with me? I've heard I should make an effort to learn alot of verbs. Also, one of my history teachers (who also teaches martial arts.), said that in order to learn languages, you should try to think in the language you're trying to learn. In other words, don't spend your time trying to translate word for word.
Another thing my french teacher told me 3 years ago, is that you shouldn't translate word for word, but translate "ideas", which I interpret as paraphrasing to some extent.

Typically , how long does it take to learn a language with Rosetta Stone.
Also On a sidenote, the exchange students at my school who come, with little or no english vocabulary, seem to learn english within a few months of being here.

So, my next question was if it'd be better to find someone who natively speaks the language ( I have a few online friends that know 2 of the languages i mentioned , and could probably teach me )
or if Rosetta is really worth the money.

Uhm, as far as the content I want to learn goes, I'm looking to learn stuff that would be for conversational type stuff, or just enough so I could read websites/books with the language.
(Though with japanese I'd probably make the effort to learn Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji as well... actually I already know alot of the katakana symbols)

Which brings me to my last and final question, Is there another FREE, or even cheap software, that would provide me with the skills I listed?

Hi everyone.

Are there any free calendar sharing applications/servicesthat can be used by small businesses?

Basically, I'm going to be part of a small business and can't afford Microsoft Exchange server (or similar) for managing our email, calendar, global contacts etc.

We can all have IMAP email accounts, and can setup an easy database to store our contacts in. But we also need a shared calendar that can be accessed by anyone on the local network, and ideally via the internet also on laptops, mobile phones etc.

Is anybody aware of a free, or cheap solution for this?

I have acquired a Sony Ericsson Walkman W518a cellphone. I have been able to get all my contacts transferred from my Motorola RAZR V3 to my Sony Walkman. However, it uses Sony Ericsson PC Suite software to synchronize contacts, which is a Microsoft Outlook based software. I have a 2007 Hewlett Packard DV9000T with Windows Vista and Office Home and Student 2007 that does not include Outlook. Is there is a way to install only the trial version of Outlook. So I gave up with that, I uninstalled it and tried to install Apache, Php, and Mysql by myself. I got Apache and PHP running after hours of trying, but I COULD NOT get Mysql running! There is a new version of Mozilla's Thunderbird which is now available from www.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/

Version 3 - the advertised enhancements are tabs, better search and mail archiving.

I only installed it yesterday, and whilst it is different, it generally seems quite good. Especially if you have multiple e-mail accounts.

I've found one small bug... but apparently that is solved, and due to be fixed with the release of 3.01 (mid-end of January).

Do you use Thunderbird ? and how do you find this upgrade ?

Bobthebuilder here, wondering if any1 could help me with a problem ive been having. i sometimes use a program called HWinPlus, or hidewindowplus, for hiding... shifty programs... from the screen and taskbar. the only problem is that each time i use it at school, i have to open it and type into a few option bars, things like to hide program, Alt z or to reveal Alt x etc... i was wondering if it was possible to create a batch file that automatically enters these options as well as opening one or two other files at the same time..

I have links to some important pages for my website on my desktop so they are quickly and easily accessible. If i already have a firefox window open then the link on the desktop will open on a new tab in the current window.

Is there a way to make it open in a new window instead? Or be able to have the option when i select it?

Maybe even to be able to click on a tab and switch it to a new window would be good but i cant seem to find any extensions to do this.

Most of the files we download from the Internet are in Zip or Rar format.
We wouldn't like if we download an archive to find that the file we are looking for is not there. It is also such a waste of bandwidth and time to download a whole archive just for a single file.

Archview is a Firefox addon that lets you preview the contents of an Archive before downloading. You can even download a single file from the archive. Currently it supports only RAR, ZIP and ISO format but that should be enough as they are the 2 most popular and common formats being used today.

Archview adds itself to the stats bar and becomes active when the user clicks on a zip or rar link. It displays the contents almost instantly and presents the files of the archive in an XML or HTML interface.
And what's more, it even lets you download individual files for an archive, now no need to download a 10 MB archive for a file of 100 Kb that is inside.

1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
(C:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\.. whatever)

2. Move all the files and folders from the "plugins" directory to the "Optional" directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).

Also make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and not allow you to move the files).

Now your acrobat reader will load very fast and almost as good as notepad..

Note: I am assuming that you've installed Acrobat Reader in C Drive
