Literature : Which is your favourite Harry Potter book amongst the seven?

Which is your favourite Harry Potter book amongst the seven? And Why?

**SPOILERS****SPOILERS****SPOILERS****SPOILERS**

My personal favourite is the sixth book
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
. I love it because of the underlying dark themes in the book. The flashes into Voldemort's life were awesome. Also the whole potions book of the half-blood prince thing. But I never understood why Rowling wanted Harry to have an ex-. I kinda liked Harry with Cho. Also the ending of the book was the start of the end of everything.

Stats : 34 Replies

[OFFICIAL] What are you currently reading?

Literature : [OFFICIAL] What are you currently reading?

I'am Reading two books right now Art of Deception and The Art of Intrusion both By Kevin D. Mitnick and William L. Simon.

The Art of Deception is about The world's most infamous hacker offers an insider's view of the low-tech threats to high-tech security
Kevin Mitnick's exploits as a cyber-desperado and fugitive form one of the most exhaustive FBI manhunts in history and have spawned dozens of articles, books, films, and documentaries. Since his release from federal prison, in 1998, Mitnick has turned his life around and established himself as one of the most sought-after computer security experts worldwide. Now, in The Art of Deception, the world's most notorious hacker gives new meaning to the old adage, "It takes a thief to catch a thief."
Focusing on the human factors involved with information security, Mitnick explains why all the firewalls and encryption protocols in the world will never be enough to stop a savvy grifter intent on rifling a corporate database or an irate employee determined to crash a system. With the help of many fascinating true stories of successful attacks on business and government, he illustrates just how susceptible even the most locked-down information systems are to a slick con artist impersonating an IRS agent. Narrating from the points of view of both the attacker and the victims, he explains why each attack was so successful and how it could have been prevented in an engaging and highly readable style reminiscent of a true-crime novel. And, perhaps most importantly, Mitnick offers advice for preventing these types of social engineering hacks through security protocols, training programs, and manuals that address the human element of security.

The Art of Intrusion is about Hacker extraordinaire Kevin Mitnick delivers the explosive encore to his bestselling The Art of Deception
Kevin Mitnick, the world's most celebrated hacker, now devotes his life to helping businesses and governments combat data thieves, cybervandals, and other malicious computer intruders. In his bestselling The Art of Deception, Mitnick presented fictionalized case studies that illustrated how savvy computer crackers use "social engineering" to compromise even the most technically secure computer systems. Now, in his new book, Mitnick goes one step further, offering hair-raising stories of real-life computer break-ins-and showing how the victims could have prevented them. ...

Stats : 365 Replies

what are the things helps you to be a good writer?????

Literature : what are the things helps you to be a good writer?????

I'm here posting a thing that has always bothers me,actually it doesn't
but my friends make it so!
here it is

I love somuch to write,so I write It's also the best way of I express my feelings
and
hell yeah
I want to be one of the best writers
but I'm not much on reading when ever and where ever I start to read I always felt asleep
I sleep where I sat before I even finish one page,
that's all the case

and my friend up here are keep telling me to giving up on writing and to look another job
that fits me before It's too late just because of their funny principle
which is

"no other but only the good reader can be a good writer" ha!
but I totally disagree with them and I'm saying
"any kind of person who knows how to use words can be a good writer"
and I deeply believe that's all it takes
besides I always watch different kind of movies
I also believe it teaches somuch, and I guess its more than reading
but the thing is I can't make them understand they're still saying "It ain't good enough"
they confirm"In writing no matter what else you do instead of reading you won't be creative,
and you will always lost"
oh please!"writing skill can only develop and be good after you write now and then"
I bet them!

what about you,who do you agree with!
I want to hear from you so post your Ideas over here!!

thank you!!!!

Stats : 10 Replies

Favorite Quote of All Time

Literature : Favorite Quote of All Time

What is your favorite quote?

I have many, many quotes that I love. I'm not talking about quotes people use like "Roses are red, violets are blue, you are sweet, and I am too". I like philosophy quotes by people you actually recognize.

My favorite one that I occasionally repeat from time to time is

"If you ain't got nothin'... then you ain't got nothin' to lose."
-Janis Joplin

I find humor, but just "life" in it too, at first I didn't like the quote. But if you think about it, it's basically true. Since then that quote stuck with me.

So what's your favorite quote?

Stats : 53 Replies

Literature : Free downloadable ebooks

Many ebooks are no longer copyright protected and so can be shared freely in any form. This thread is to share book sources like that. You are also encouraged to share your free legal ebook sources here. To start off, I'll share a couple

1. Project Gutenberg - Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related technologies today. You can download your books in plain text format. Some of the books which are illustrated can be downloaded in pdf format.

Project Gutenberg can be accessed at http://www.gutenberg.org.

2. University of Virginia Electronic Texts center - has pursued twin missions with equal seriousness of purpose since its inception in 1992:

To build and maintain an internet-accessible collection of SGML and XML-encoded texts and images

To build and maintain user communities adept at the creation and use of these materials

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/

3. ...

Stats : 21 Replies

Literature : The Zombie Survival Guide

I love The Zombie Survival Guide. It's by Max Brooks, who is the son of Mel Brooks, and sketch writer for Saturday Night Live. The book has an extremely detailed insight of how to survive a zombie apocalypse. Maybe that's what is hilarious about it. I don't know about you, but I'll be on an offshore oil rig when it hits.

Stats : 2 Replies

Harry Potter: "Dumbledore Is Gay"

Literature : Harry Potter: "Dumbledore Is Gay"

Whoa there! Before I get banned for trolling...

BBC News wrote:

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed that one of her characters, Hogwarts school headmaster Albus Dumbledore, is gay.

She made her revelation to a packed house in New York's Carnegie Hall on Friday, as part of her US book tour...

Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7053982.stm

So what do those of us who have read the books think? Does this make sense in the way you saw the character? Does this affect your interpretation of the storyline any way or is it a non-issue?

Furthermore, what do the cynics among us think of the timing of this announcement? Pre-film publicity seeking perhaps? Or now the books are finished does Rowling feel she has ideas she would like would like to tell the world?

Stats : 34 Replies

I just don't like looking at digitised text when I'm reading a novel. I like the feel, the weight and even the smell of books but I can see the sense of switching to digital text. For one thing they'd be cheaper to release, meaning the author
should
get to keep more of the royalties. There's also the forests we'd theoretically be saving. So what do you think? Will e-books ever replace hardcopy books?

Stats : 119 Replies

Literature : I've NEVER read/seen Harry Potter -- am I alone??

With this week's movie and book release, I feel completely left out of this literary and film phenomenon.

Is there anyone else on the planet who's not read or seen the HP films/books?

Check in here if so ... we should have a support group or something!

Stats : 57 Replies

Literature : weirdest book you've ever read

So, they've got a "weirdest movie you've ever seen" thread in the movies/television forum, and I realized that almost all of my "weirdest" movies were actually based on books. So I decided to ask, what's the weirdest books you've ever read, and what made them weird? Was it the writing style, the plot line, something else?

Stats : 52 Replies

The Yellow Wallpaper

Literature : The Yellow Wallpaper

Perhaps some other people here are familiar with a short story called

The Yellow Wallpaper

by
Charlotte Perkins-Gilman
. I recently had to write an essay about it because I was studying it in my Literature class...

The general plot is this; it was written and set in the late 1800's, and a couple have rented a large manor house for a while since their house is being decorated. The woman suffers from mental illness and has been prescribed a very primitive "cure" which simply states that she must do as little as possible and sleep as much as she can. I won't ruin the rest of the story for you though.

It took 2 days to write and you can read it in about an hour (that's if you're a slow reader).
If you have an hour spare... here's a link. It's no longer copyright protected.

I have to say, it's now one of my favourite stories, and by far better than anything else I've had to read for school work.

I am really fascinated by some of the underlying themes, especially the idea that the yellow of the wallpaper symbolises daylight, during which men dominate. Jane, the narrator, is liberated by night, when she awakes are tears away the paper. There are so many ideas and undertones in this story that I really wonder how Gilman wrote it in only 2 days.

Anyone else here who's read it? What undertones did you pick up on?

Stats : 2 Replies

Pop/Rock Song Lyrics

Literature : Pop/Rock Song Lyrics

Songs are poems, too! Also I can actually understand them.

This is my current favorite:

"Emotionless"
Good Charlotte

Hey dad
I'm writing to you
not to tell you, that I still hate you
just to ask you
how you feel
and how we fell apart
how this fell apart

are you happy out there in this great wide world?
do you think about your sons?
do you miss your little girl?
when you lay your head down
how do you sleep at night?
do you even wonder if we're all right?

but we're all right
we're all right

[Chorus:]
it's been a long hard road without you by my side
why weren't you there all the nights that we cried
you broke my mother's heart
you broke your children for life
it's not ok,
but we're all right
I remember the days, you were a hero in my eyes
but those were just a long lost memory of mine
I spent so many years learning how to survive
Now, I'm writing just to let you know I'm still alive

the days I spent so cold, so hungry
were full of hate
I was so angry
those scars run deep inside this tattooed body
there's things I'll take, to my grave
but I'm okay
I'm okay

[Chorus:]
it's been a long hard road without you by my side
why weren't you there all the nights that we cried
you broke my mother's heart
you broke your children for life
it's not ok,
but we're all right
I remember the days, you were a hero in my eyes
but those were just a long lost memory of mine
Now, I'm writing just to let you know I'm still alive
yeah, I'm still alive

sometimes
I forgive
yeah and this time
I'll admit
that I miss you, said I miss you

[Chorus:]
it's been a long hard road without you by my side
why weren't you there all the nights that we cried
you broke my mother's heart
you broke your children for life
it's not ok,
but we're all right
I remember the days, you were a hero in my eyes
but those were just a long lost memory of mine
Now, I'm writing just to let you know I'm still alive

and sometimes
I forgive
and this time
I'll admit, that I miss you, I miss you

Literature : Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

Has anyone read this book? I started to read it and it is so powerful and uses such diction that I gave up after the first chapter. Of course I was a lot younger then. I was going through my things and found I still had this book checked out from my high school library from years ago and wanted to start reading it again. I am 20 years old now and think I should be able to handle this book. I really want to delve into the mind of this man. No I am not nazi going to try to take over the world, I am just a normal guy who wants to read this amazingly large book. What do you guys think?

Stats : 24 Replies

Literature : The World Without Us

I just crossed paths with this book and decided it was interesting enough to buy. I haven't completely finished it yet, but it seems pretty cool -- what would happen if humanity was vanished from the earth? (and by cool I mean in a radical sense; I don't think it's cool if humanity was to be erased from existence).

The Code Book - Simon Singh

Literature : The Code Book - Simon Singh

The Code Book contains many fascinating accounts of code-breaking in action, from its use in unmasking the Man in the Iron Mask and the defeat of the Nazis to the breaking of a modern cipher system by a world-wide army of amateurs in 1994. It is especially good on the most recent developments, such as quantum cryptology and the thorny civil liberties issues raised by the advent of very secure cipher systems over the Internet. But Singh's mathematical prowess sometimes gets the better of his journalistic instincts, leading to technical descriptions that unnecessarily disrupt the narrative flow. So buy it--and have a shot at the 10,000 pound mystery cipher--but be prepared to skip.

Stats : 5 Replies

Literature : The Dresden Files

I started reading this series last summer, and not a lot of people seemed to be into it-- but over the course of the last year, I've noticed a HUGE increase in readers, and general interest.

I have no idea why, unless it's delayed popularity from the TV show or just plain old word of mouth.

:) Have any of you guys read the series? What are your thoughts?

what books do you recommend to people?

Literature : what books do you recommend to people?

My question: what books do you consistently find yourself recommending to people and why? What books do you wish you more often met people who had read them because you wish you had someone to discuss them with? Here's my list:

1) The Once and Future King, THWHite--because it's beautiful
2) The Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace--it's wordy and intelligent
3) Tale of Two Cities, Dickens--because Sydney Carton is my favorite character EVER
4) House of Leaves, Mark Z Danielewiski--it's the weirdest book I've ever read
5) Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay, Michael Chabon--it's my favorite
6) Time Traveler's Wife, by...some girl I can't remember--it's good clean fun
7) Dark TOwer Series, Stephen King--I can't even describe them

Stats : 5 Replies

The Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson

Literature : The Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson

The Diamond Age is an interesting post-cyberpunk sort of book following multiple interwoven story arcs. It's set in a future Earth where nanotechnology is cheap and prevalent, leading to the breakdown of nation states and the development of global cultural groups, no longer bound to geography. The story follows two main characters through separate arcs of an interwoven main plot, along with several other subplots.

The book begins by simply dropping you into the setting following a short-lived arc that is loosely connected to the rest of the book. It's a fairly sudden exposure to society and technology that takes a little bit of reading to figure out how things work. There are a few more chapters that seem like dead ends to help expose the setting before you really start to see the development of the story. The rest of the book bounces around through the subplots in an almost chaotic manner that, in the end, makes sense. The story is unfurled through out the world and through the psyches of the main characters; it's more of a personal journey than a temporal one revolving around social upheaval, moral obligation and the like...

The end of the book is a little abrupt and almost anti-climactic (Not so much anti-climactic, but rather, there's noafter-glow after the climax, it just kicks you out of bed). It seems like it's nicely set up for a continuing serial, but it's been a good 13 years since the book was written, and I don't think there's another, despite it receiving a fair amount of success (Apparently it's been announced as a Sci-Fi Channel mini-series in 2007). Despite this, the end is sensible, and leaves you thinking about where the world is going to go, and how the lives of the characters will pan out.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Stats : 3 Replies

Literature : Sinclair Lewis

I've read only
It Can't Happen Here
, but I think I'd be more interested in some of his other works that have more specified social commentary, although I did enjoy some of the contradictions of the self-proclaimed moral characters in the book, as they easily applied to modern times. Any thoughts on his writing style, messages/themes, life, etc.? Discuss any book of his, or just him in general.

Stats : 1 Post

Literature : My Script

Sorry is this is the wrong forum, but I wrote a script and I wanted to share it with you all and get your thoughts. Keep in mind though that it is for a machinema (Machine Cinema or video game movie) made with the video game Halo 3, so you may be unfamiliar with some of the terms. Also please keep in mind that it is episode 2 of a series so you just have to roll with it. You can watch episode one here if you want, but I didn't write it, and I don't think it's very good.

Quick Glossary:
Warthog - 3 seat jeep w/ mounted gun
UNSC - Future united earth military
Forrunners - ancient race of super technologicaly advanced aliens that are now all dead.
I'll ad more info here if you guys need it.

Here it is, I'm looking for constructive criticism:

Gray Team Transmission 2

Scene 1

[opening credits start rolling as the episode starts]
(The scene opens in the lab where A24 was created. The three androids are talking to Dr. Riser)

A21: … and then he just disappeared! One minute he was standing in front of us, and the next he was gone.

Riser: So, 21, tell me about this forerunner technology.

A21: Yes sir.

Riser: Since when do you call me sir?

A23: We are in the military.

Riser: well that's true, but, well technically, I'm not in your chain of command and... well no matter, tell me about what else you saw.

A21: We went into a forerunner structure and there was a terminal that the lieutenant said could be some sort of interface with the Halo rings. There are techs working on it, but it's badly damaged.

Riser: (babbling excitedly) My god! Do you know what this means?! ...

...

Stats : 2 Replies

Literature : Recommend me some Love...craft ;)

Right,
I read Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow over Innsmouth and The Shadow out of Time so far.
Are there any Lovecraft fans here to recommend me similar material?
In my opinion Lovecraft wrote some great psychological horror. I really enjoyed what I read until now.

Stats : 1 Post

Sinopse:

Dante's Divine Comedy

Literature : Dante's Divine Comedy

Personally, my favorite book is Dante Alighieri's
The Divine Comedy
(which is often actually sold as a set of three books:
The Inferno
,
The Purgatorio
,
The Paradiso
). It was originally written in Italian, and it has been translated many times (a lot of translators translated it differently... I personally recommend John Ciardi's translation). I guess there's nothing left to do but write a short blurb on it (specifically
The Inferno
, as it is the first book in the set).

It's the year 1300 and a single poet (Dante Alighieri) realizes that he's strayed from the road to enlightenment. After trying to begin his ascent, a lion and a leopard both attempt to prevent him from continuing, but he persists. A she-wolf finally causes him to flee to the dark wood, ruining all hope of seeing the light. Finally, the dead poet Virgil, sent by Dante's former lover (Beatrice), sends him on a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and finally Paradise (the last led by Beatrice) so to finally bring Dante out of the darkness.

Has anyone else read it?

Stats : 7 Replies

Literature : The Master and Margarita

This is a Russian novel- actually classic- by Mikhail Bulgakov. Written under state oppression (Stalin)- pokes fun at the state and tells a very touching love story beyween the master (writer) and Margarita, a housewife..
Devil and his retinue is portrayed in a funny and interesting way.. quite humane.
Enjoyed it immensely.

Stats : 2 Replies

Literature : Pratchet lovers

Can anyone recall the feeling of well being and statisfaction on finding and reading their first Pratchet book, especially from the Disc World series. They all show a facinating insight into the workings of both society and individual minds, particularly the early books. The humour is very droll and dry at times but will have you at least chuckling to your self, with outloud expetives said every now and then, totally anoying anyone in the room with you. If you want a good read then you have 20-30 books to discover about the disc of a world, supported on the backs of elephants, stood on a giant turtle "swimming" through space

Stats : 7 Replies

Gentleman Bastards series - Scott Lynch

Literature : Gentleman Bastards series - Scott Lynch

At the recommendation of a friend in November, I received
The Lies of Locke Lamora
by Scott Lynch, the first in his Gentleman Bastards series, as a Christmas gift. Between being generally busy and reading other books at the same time, it took me until early February to finish the book.

The series is set in a fantasy world with something of a Mediterranean flair to it, but isn't the typical fantasy setting involving various races and ridiculous feats of magic and giant swords... though magic is present (as well as alchemy). His descriptions of the setting are quite vivid, though not drawn out. The detail he does offer allows you to quickly develop a picture in your mind without going Tolkien and detailing everything... just enough. All in all, his setting is just mundane enough to be believable, while being mystical enough to be interesting; suspension of disbelief isn't stretched here.

The story centers around what is, in essence, a thieves guild, The Gentleman Bastards; how they came to be and how they operate. The Gentleman Bastards are basically a group of con artists, and the story goes through some of their smaller cons while centering on one major con they begin setting up from the start of the book, coming to conclusion towards the end. Throughout the tale, the author jumps back and forth through time, from the present to various points in the group's youth and back again. These shifts are expositions of the characters' development and education, usually showing some particular lesson relevant to the predicament immediately before the shift.

The book concludes on a down point, similar in feel to the end of The Empire Strikes Back, making the reader want to grab the next book to see where things go. ...

Stats : 2 Replies

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

Literature : Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

This book is one of my personal favorites. A good science fiction tale, without any heavy and hard to remember politics (well, not many anyways).
An interesting concept, with good strong characters.

Has anyone else read this book, or any of the sequels? If so, what are your views on it?

Stats : 15 Replies

The Garden of Love

Literature : The Garden of Love

A magic moment I remember:
I raised my eyes and you were there.
A fleeting vision, the quintessence
Of all that's beautiful and rare.

I pray to mute despair and anguish
To vain pursuits the world esteems,
Long did I near your soothing accents,
Long did your features haunt my dreams.

Time passed- A rebel storm-blast scattered
The reveries that once were mine
And I forgot your soothing accents,
Your features gracefully divine.

In dark days of enforced retirement
I gazed upon grey skies above
With no ideals to inspire me,
No one to cry for, live for, love.

Then came a moment of renaissance,
I looked up- you again are there,
A fleeting vision, the quintessence
Of all that`s beautiful and rare.

Stats : 8 Replies
