Literature : Looking for a book to read

Well, I'm on the road a lot lately, and have hours of free time while in a bus almost every day - perfect time for a book.

I'm looking for something similar to Lovecraft's stories, psychological horror etc...
I'm not sure if there are books which can give you the same feeling like Lovecraft's work, but there must be something close to it.

Post your recommendations

Stats : 7 Replies

[OFFICIAL] What are you currently reading?

Literature : [OFFICIAL] What are you currently reading?

I'am Reading two books right now Art of Deception and The Art of Intrusion both By Kevin D. Mitnick and William L. Simon.

The Art of Deception is about The world's most infamous hacker offers an insider's view of the low-tech threats to high-tech security
Kevin Mitnick's exploits as a cyber-desperado and fugitive form one of the most exhaustive FBI manhunts in history and have spawned dozens of articles, books, films, and documentaries. Since his release from federal prison, in 1998, Mitnick has turned his life around and established himself as one of the most sought-after computer security experts worldwide. Now, in The Art of Deception, the world's most notorious hacker gives new meaning to the old adage, "It takes a thief to catch a thief."
Focusing on the human factors involved with information security, Mitnick explains why all the firewalls and encryption protocols in the world will never be enough to stop a savvy grifter intent on rifling a corporate database or an irate employee determined to crash a system. With the help of many fascinating true stories of successful attacks on business and government, he illustrates just how susceptible even the most locked-down information systems are to a slick con artist impersonating an IRS agent. Narrating from the points of view of both the attacker and the victims, he explains why each attack was so successful and how it could have been prevented in an engaging and highly readable style reminiscent of a true-crime novel. And, perhaps most importantly, Mitnick offers advice for preventing these types of social engineering hacks through security protocols, training programs, and manuals that address the human element of security.

The Art of Intrusion is about Hacker extraordinaire Kevin Mitnick delivers the explosive encore to his bestselling The Art of Deception
Kevin Mitnick, the world's most celebrated hacker, now devotes his life to helping businesses and governments combat data thieves, cybervandals, and other malicious computer intruders. In his bestselling The Art of Deception, Mitnick presented fictionalized case studies that illustrated how savvy computer crackers use "social engineering" to compromise even the most technically secure computer systems. Now, in his new book, Mitnick goes one step further, offering hair-raising stories of real-life computer break-ins-and showing how the victims could have prevented them. ...

Stats : 520 Replies

e-books vs. hardcopy

Literature : e-books vs. hardcopy

I've tried reading a few e-books but I've always given up. I just don't like looking at digitised text when I'm reading a novel. I like the feel, the weight and even the smell of books but I can see the sense of switching to digital text. For one thing they'd be cheaper to release, meaning the author
should
get to keep more of the royalties. There's also the forests we'd theoretically be saving. So what do you think? Will e-books ever replace hardcopy books?

Stats : 153 Replies

Literature : NaNoWriMo 2009!

The countdown for National Novel Writing Month 2009 starts in just a few days. Is anyone here planning on participating? Have you done so before?

Check out www.nanowrimo.org for more information on the event.

Last year was the first time I succeeded, and I have plans to do so again this year, no matter the obstacles! Nothing like being able to say you've written a novel (even if it does need a lot of work to be publicly consumable...)

Stats : 19 Replies

[OFFICIAL] Favourite Author

Literature : [OFFICIAL] Favourite Author

Dan Brown is one of the best writers I have ever seen. I liked all of his books, Angels & Demons, The DaVinci Code, Deception Point, etc. I like thrilling books like that and he writes books that really give a lot of detail and they are well researched. I also like when something is always happening, and Dan Brown is good with that too. I have read all of Dan Brown's books and I really wish he would come out with more.

Another author I really like is Joel C. Rosenberg, he writes political thrillers and things like that. I like him because his first book (The Last Jihad) was about the war in Iraq, so he's writing about stuff that is happenening now. I am just getting into the next book (The Last Days) and it is turning out to be good, even though I am not currently very far into it. I want another book he has written but havn't been able to find it.

The third and final author that I like the most, that I can think of right now, is probably one of yours. . ...

Stats : 270 Replies

Literature : Vince Flynn

Has anyone read his latest book, Pursuit of Honor? I've read all of his others and they are wonderful! Very entertaining and easy reads. If you enjoy spy/conspiracy/action novels I would recommend you try one of his. They are pretty easy to pick up in any order but are even more enjoyable when you read them in the scheduled order as each one references events in the previous books (not so much that you can't follow the story or enjoy the novel, but just enough that it makes more sense).

Stats : 1 Post

Prom Nights from Hell

Literature : Prom Nights from Hell

In this exciting collection of tales of terror, the bestselling authors Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries), Stephanie Meyer (The Twilight), Kim Harrison, Michele and Lauren Myracle Faffe gathered to show that graduation can be an event far more terrifying than you think. Problems in wardrobe and a couple dancing badly are nothing compared to discover that you're dancing with death, and she is not here to compliment your dress. Problems with vampires to a battle between angels and demons, these five stories will entertain more than any DJ in a tacky suit. Nothing limousine or evening dress: only a large dose of frightening fun.

books turning into movies- popularity

Literature : books turning into movies- popularity

I'm not sure if it's only me but does the books become more popular when they are turned into movies? Many times I have either never heard of the book or thought that it might be a good book. It could be because our library is small and don't have all the different books, or it could be that I don't bother reading all books I might find interesting.

What do you all think?

Stats : 22 Replies

What attracts you to a book?

Literature : What attracts you to a book?

Do you tend to browse a genre you enjoy? Or authors you know are similar to those you like? Do you go mainly on personal recommendations? Is it the cover? How much attention do you pay to the description on the back? And how much are we at the forum intruding on your choices?

I probably go mainly by browsing the sections of the library that appeal most. With a less organised second hand sale I'll just quickly look over everything- and unless I've heard of an author the decision will probably be based on the title, the cover, and then the blurb on the rear cover!...occasionally I have found some wonderful books this way.
The Mortal Instruments

Literature : The Mortal Instruments

After the success of the series of strident Twilight by Stephenie Meyer that basically talks about the love between a vampire and a mortal as well as involving werewolves, a new series is coming and conquering timidly many fans of Twilight, only this time the vampires come out and go angels, that's right, angels! But these angels are different, they are Nephilim (half angel and half human).
This is The Mortal Instruments Series of Cassandra Claire, the stories revolve around a world where the Nephilim (half angel/half human offspring indirect Raziel) go around the world in order to protect humans from dangers coming from demons or half demons (werewolves, vampires and others). In addition there are three deadly instruments to be protected at all costs, because if they fall into the wrong hands can cause major damage.

Cassandra Claire lives in Brooklyn, New York, and is currently writing a new series The Infernal Devices that also involve these mystical beings that inhabit our imaginations.
Is this more a lottery? Win as many fans as in Twilight? Who knows?
The series has already been to Europe and Australia and promises to reach other countries. One thing sure, if the series come to Portugal and do a good success there, the chances of the series also come to Brazil are many.

Literature : Stephanie Meyer's "The Host"

I'm listening to this on audio CD. It's a very interesting take on an alien invasion that has already happened, and we lost.

I don't want to say anymore, because I don't want to spoil stuff. It's written in a very interesting way, and you don't learn everything that happened all at once. A little here and a little there, history is revealed on what exactly happened and why we lost the invasion.

Stats : 7 Replies

Literature : Want to write a book?

Well, take part in writing a book?

I set up a website some time ago and never got around to promoting it.

Check out Globalbook project

I've posted more info on the "promote your website" but I thought this may be a more apt location as I think all the book lovers hang around here.

Suggestions for the site are greatfully received.[/url]

Stats : 10 Replies

Sherlock Homles- The story of great detective

Literature : Sherlock Homles- The story of great detective

Hello everyone,

Have you ever read any stories about Sherlock Holmes? Sherlock Holmes is among my favorite books. I read the stories very often. They are interesting and suspense.

Sherlock Holmes is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). It is about a detective and his assistant, who together solve the hardest cases of criminal activities. “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is my favorite Sherlock Holmes story.

Stats : 6 Replies

Kindle - Can those who have tried it give their take on it?

Literature : Kindle - Can those who have tried it give their take on it?

The long thread on "e-books vs. hardcopy" seems to tackle only marginally devices such as the Kindle (and competitors, existing or to come). Yet the concept is supposedly pretty different from reading on a screen, since it has to do with electronic ink, not with the type of display found on our regular computer screens.

Could people who have actually tried the Kindle give us some light here? What differences did you find with hardcopy books? With computer screens?

Stats : 3 Replies

Literature : Your favourite book (official)

There are like 4 other threads out there with this topic, and they are scattered in different forums, so I am just going to make this the offical "what is your favorite book" thread.

So...what
is
your favorite book?

Literature : I've NEVER read/seen Harry Potter -- am I alone??

With this week's movie and book release, I feel completely left out of this literary and film phenomenon.

Is there anyone else on the planet who's not read or seen the HP films/books?

Literature : Christopher Paolini

Christopher Paolini is the author of Eragon, The Eldest and other books. I find Christopher Paolini's style of writing captivating. This means that i am drawn into the books and can not stop reading until i finish it.
What are you writing about? Have you succeeded before? Do you have a plot outline or are you going in blind?

I gave it a shot once before but didn't get past 7500 words. Now that I have a had a little more experience writing short things, I figured I'd try it again, but it's only fun if you know others are suffering along with you!

Stats : 19 Replies
