Dreamweaver easy to use?

Design Tips : Dreamweaver easy to use?

I use Microsoft Publisher for my web building which seems to be very uncommon here.

I am thinking about buying Dreamweaver 8 because I hear it is easy to use and you can have webpages centered, and it comes with alot of nice tools, but when I got a Demo Version it seems very frustrating to use as when I post images in the page and they have to be in a certain area and not just drug anywhere like in Publisher. Many people say it is pretty easy to make nice pages so I want your opinions.

I am pretty good with coding but I generally use Design view and then edit the code to my liking to make it center and whatnot, so I am looking for a good website builder, that allows me to see what I am doing.

Would you recommend Dreamweaver or is there a better program that allows me to see what I am doing? (I have Frontpage 2003 but I hear that teaches people the wrong way of coding.)

Stats : 16 Replies

Design Tips : Can it be possible?

Hello,
I want to insert on my website a guest book but I don't know/want to use MySQL... can I do it only with HTML, CSS? I am not interested in "registered users" to write or to store names and addresses... just simple comments... well?
Thanks!

Stats : 5 Replies

Website design for multiple screen resolutions

Design Tips : Website design for multiple screen resolutions

I learned something yesterday. Possibly this is elementary for most of you, but it gave me a great thrill when it succeeded in the end. I am not a professional Web designer. It is just a hobby for me. So for lack of anybody else with the know-how I designed a Website for our Department at work in 2002 using FrontPage 2000 (I now use FrontPage 2003). At that time all of us had 14 or 15 inch monitors and it looked quite OK. Then a year ago when we were given new hardware those who qualified for new hardware were given 19 inch HP LCD monitors which was like jumping from the archaic to modern. I then received complaints from people who still had the smaller resolution screens that they could not see the shortcuts in the title bar of the Website, i.e. like the ones of Frihost above. Some of the shortcuts folded in or disappeared on their screens.

I then had to puzzle about this, and after working it out over a month or so came up with a solution. ...

Stats : 5 Replies

What would you like to see more of?

Design Tips : What would you like to see more of?

I am quite bored and need a summer project to work on. I was wondering what you, as viewers, would like to see more of. Currently, I only have two ideas:

1. "ShareYW" - Share Your Web, a free online directory tool that allows users to manage their sites with stats and such.

2. "YourFTP" - A free online FTP client where users can manage files and such over the internet instead of with a client.

So what is your suggestion? Thanks!

EDIT: If you have an idea for your own, feel free to post it and I'll include it in my post!

Stats : 2 Replies

I bought this program called CoffeeCup Visual Site Designer. I found it really easy to use, but when I try to connect and setup my internet connection it doesn't work. Anybody use this program and have information about how to set this up. I bought a website on godaddy.com and tried to host with it, and am now hosting on here. Does anybody what information I need to put into the boxes to setup the connection to get my website online.

Stats : 1 Post

Who have many websites - just curious

Design Tips : Who have many websites - just curious

Who has many websites, can you give me a general idea how is it possible? I have only one and it takes a lot of time to select information, illustrations, select the better story line, actually write, edit and so on (aquarium hobby related). No time for another one at all.

What makes it possible:
- different type of website, like based on self expression and fast typing,
- different software, speeding the process,
- different format, like php instead of html with css,
- just work faster?

No offense meant with my assumptions, really. Just curious, how is it possible for some to make and maintain ten websites, while my one takes all the time.

Stats : 6 Replies

Design Tips : Using Video on a Website

Hi everyone, I'd like to know how I can shoot a video and add it to my site. Is anyone familiar with adding video to their site?

I'd like some information from others on how to shoot a video to post because I have never done it before.

Upon searching, here are some tips that I found but I'm not sure if others who are experienced in posting/uploading video here agree with them.

http://www.ojr.org/ojr/wiki/video/

Does a website have to be 'from scratch' to be 'your work'?

Design Tips : Does a website have to be 'from scratch' to be 'your work'?

What's the opinion of people on frih? To what extet does a wesite have to be 100% from-scratch (i.e. using a CMS, but with no templates on which you ase your work) to qualify as 'your site'? A pretty big professional developer I knew sold a slightly-customised Wordpress install as 'his site', but in the past I've been told that calling a site 'my work' when it was based on an heavily-customised non-default e107 template (with work done to the e107 code as well) was dishonest.

So, Frihost developers, how much work does a site need before it's "yours"? Or is it something different that lets you make that claim?

Stats : 7 Replies

Website Software - A Tool

Design Tips : Website Software - A Tool

I think what helped me when I started to learn how to do a Website was that I had materials that I wanted to publish on the Internet. I was completely gung-ho and driven, and that does make learning that much more focussed and motivated. All I needed were the tools to publish the Website. It was the content that spurred me on. I learned by doing. I tried various software programmes, including writing my own HTML, however, found FrontPage the easiest package with just the right amount of sophistication for me, as well as familiarty of MS-Word style editing including Undo, spell check, cut and paste from Word, etc. When I first started using FrontPage 98, it had its own photo editor, but I preferred a light version of Adobe Photoshop LE that had been bundled in with Adobe PageMill 3.0. I had purchased the latter Website software while I was experimenting, however FrontPage came out more practical for me. Very recently I had cause to download GIMP for photo editing and am getting to the stage where I prefer it over Adobe Photoshop LE. I am not big on bells and whistles for Websites, however do want to learn more about publishing Videos on a Website but in the most economical way from a file size point of view. ...

Stats : 2 Replies

Design Tips : Gimp to create blind effects

Hi,

Im using GIMP to design my banner and lots of stuff and I'm a newbie using this.
Can someone help me how to accomplish a blind effect + fading on my banner?
I've seen some sample on the internet and I paste the link here for example.

http://www.hitguru.net/cyber-blue-website-template/images/banner_main.jpg

I want to have that same effect also with a cloud background.

Hope someone could respond to this.

thanks,

Vickriz
PS: I cant find some good step-by-step tutorial for GIMP on the internet. Do you know one?

Stats : 2 Replies

Designing an estore

Design Tips : Designing an estore

I'm working on a website for my eshop. As this is my first, I've been doing some research. I'm surprised at the number of tables used for layout. I thought that tables were frowned on for page layout. As a dyslexic I've worked hard to learn how use divs and css or layout and I feel that by using tables I would be taking a step backward.

Can anyone tell me if it's normal to use tables when designing websites for eshops

Stats : 7 Replies

Design Tips : Photoshop CS3 Flash and GIF

Hi!
I decided to star new topic about Photoshop Cs3. You can make your website look very animated for example logo. You make logo animation and for browsers with flash you output animation file to flash and for html browsers you output it to GIF (compuserve). I make websites graphics only with Photoshop and with nothing else. The code I make with Dreamweaver CS3 and sometimes with Microsoft Expression. Those are best programs to make websites. I think..
Review Crew needed

Design Tips : Review Crew needed

w/ the topic post of www.frihost.com/forums/vt-86620.html
i would like to c if anyone is interested in the scene of judging websites but here are some of the requirements:

rvec wrote:

People who want to be in this group have to put at least 5 links in their post to comments they made in the advertise your website forum.

The idea is to review a request to see what is good about there site & what can be upgraded. People who request a website review must write a essay-ish on what there sites aimed for, what there site is about, who its aimed for, etc. Sounds long but if you get going on some of these facts, explain it and back it up, you'll end up with pages even! This is so the panel can get a real look into what you're seeking into.

Anyone want to be involved in being the panel, reply it.

Stats : 3 Replies

Design Tips : How many people have heard of SVG?

The "VG" stands for vector graphics and is available for all browsers.
This is the equivalent of "Open Source" software that can deliver "Rich Web Content"

When you build websites a critical aspect has always been the prettier the better. Of course every year these standards get harder and harder to achieve especially using open source (HTML, CSS etc)

Did you know that you can write an equivalent to your HTML page?

Stats : 10 Replies

Design Tips : A portfolio site

What are the best tips for designing a site, that would be your portfolio? I am going to have a website that will display all of the websites I have designed, plus Graphics and photography. What do you think would be a good color scheme? I have experience creating the drop shadow effect on the back of the content area of a web page as in www.markverkler.org but I don't know if that's the approach i should go for. I have seen many web sites where they have a flash portfolio, do I want that? Or should I go for a different approach.

Stats : 8 Replies

YourNet - Design Check/Tips

Design Tips : YourNet - Design Check/Tips

Hey, couple friends and I are working on starting this forum with the name YourNet we have gone threw a couple names such as Social Payment Network but we settled on this more web 2.0 name.

The site is similar to Frihost in it is a forum based site and run by ads. Basically how it works; you get points for posting then at a certain point you can buy stuff with these points such as domain names or maybe just exchange them for real money sent to your Paypal.

So far this is just a first version template modified subsilver template. Tell what you think of it maybe give me suggestions on category's or forum's. I am at a loss for what I should do for the navigation.

http://www.yournet.frih.net/phpBB2

Were hoping to launch it this coming weekend we all need to have a meeting and work out the details and crap but ya.

Throw me all your suggestions no matter how far fetched they may be.

Thanks,
ImageReady secret

Design Tips : ImageReady secret

Alot of people do not know this. Imageready can also be used to edit a graphic into a web interface. You can edit the image into layer based slices and use those layer based slices as the buttons. You can even add a roll over state and make one image turn into another image on mouse over. Seriously i think Imageready has the most web potintial for highly graphic and rare looking webdesigns.

Stats : 2 Replies

My first website project

Design Tips : My first website project

Okay guys, well I am completely new to working with making webpages. I can program in java decent enough, but I do not know any html or php. I want to make a website that has 3 pages in it. Me and my buddies are going to have a madden tournament, and I wish to make this website in order to help coordinate when the games should be played and all that good stuff.

Page 1:
Main page
include rules of the league.

Page 2:
Stats page.
will show the stats of players who their next game is and all the good crap.

I believe I can make both of these pages quite easy with microsoft frontpage and upload them.

the one I would like suggestions for is page 3.

the Chat page.

I want to make a simple page that they could all log in and post messages on the webpage itself.
I really don't know where to begin with this. I've never worked with cookies or sessions.

It doesnt have to look pretty. I just want the username to appear next to the message and have it added to the top of the page pushing the last 19 things said or so down one line. After that messages will get bumped off...

Does anyone have any ideas where I can learn the code that I will need to use?

Stats : 4 Replies

Finally, some good advice.

Design Tips : Finally, some good advice.

Hi folks.

I frequently watch the advertise your web site forum, and so often see the same thing. People talking about how they are going to have the greatest forum or chat room, without designing a real web site. I usually lambaste them with some sort of witt, but I finally feel vindicated.

I found this great series of writing for the web on a blog here

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/01/how-to-build-a-high-traffic-web-site-or-blog/

It really is good content, and the message is clear... FOCUS on good content... that is what truly is important.

I need a few weeks to dig through the rest of this guy's content.. because it is awesome!

Stats : 9 Replies

Design Tips : submit email to an email address

I need to design a text box into which a user can type in their email address, click the "submit" button, and the email address will be forwarded on to my pal Bob, who will be adding the email addresses to a listserv. I know how to write the html, but what's the simplest scripting language to execute the data transfer? Bob would like to receive this information in the form of an email.

Stats : 9 Replies

I am a real rookie - I need help

Design Tips : I am a real rookie - I need help

Hello all,

I made a website based on a free template. I am a rookie, I don't know to much about webdesign.
My website is www.rofreelance.net
I think that the first page should be modified. I have an idea about what I want but I don't know how to do it.
OK, If you are looking on the first page you see that are a lot of cubes... pictured in different way.
I want to make a column with the menus: art; 3d - cad; dtp; photo; translation and when my mouse is pointing one, the cube to change... I want that cube just in one place... but to change appearance...
I am not sure if I was clear (that's happen when you are talking with a rookie )... I think the operation is called "rollover"? or not?

Please don't laugh and try to help me.
THANKS!

Stats : 4 Replies

Looking for Feedback on Re-design

Design Tips : Looking for Feedback on Re-design

I finally worked up the gumption to take a hack at re-doing the style of my site, and some feedback would be muchly appreciated.

The new style is at: http://www.teachbabel.com

The old style is now at: http://www.teachbabel.com/old_index.html

Overall, I think it's an improvement. The biggest changes you'll notice are the new header and a different color scheme. The old one seemed kind of dingy and outdated.

I'm still not entirely happy with it, though. The h2 tags don't seem quite right, and I'm thinking of changing around the layout of the content on the front page.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
- Walkere

Stats : 13 Replies
