I use Dreamweaver 3 and, during design, have trouble with the 'testing' previews for Internet Explorer.

From time to time as I develop a website I use DW's preview to make sure my code is working. This works just fine in Firefox preview, but is problematic with Internet Explorer previews.

For example, I have "Add To Cart" button icons that often don't load when previewing in IE. The rest of the page previews fine but IE stalls when it tries to load the button icons. This does NOT happen with FF.

However, when I load the same web page onto a host server, and then access the page with Internet Explorer, the button icons load and appear jut fine.

Has anyone else seen this preview problem?

Im building a site for a tattooist and I want to make his gallery somewhat similar to how myspace is, where you have a bunch of thumbnails at the bottom and when you click them it opens a large version of the picture to view. Does anyone have any simple advice or links to some type of tutorial for this type of gallery? Thanks in advance.

My home-page has two bugs and I am at witts end trying to figure out what is wrong.

1. A header table at the top of my home page page has a background image in the 1st row. This image appears OK in design mode and OK in FireFox. The image does NOT appear in Internet Explorer. I'm at a loss to understand why.

2. In both FireFox and Internet Explorer, when

to this home page from other pages, only the header table appears (without the table background image in IE). The rest of the page does not appear ..... only meaningless icons where the page content should be. External page links to my home page are correct and the home page header table appears when clicking the home page line, but the content does not.

My desire to have a website has waned over the last few years. Since I do web related work all day, the last thing I want to do at home is more of it. Usually I change the design of my site evey 1-2 years, as I get bored with it and want to try something new. I haven't changed it in almost 3 years, and haven't posted an update in almost 2 years. I had started a new layout about 2 years ago, but I have yet to finish it, and am not too keen on working on it again. Though I might, since I don't like how the current one looks anymore. though after this change, I don't think I will be changing it again.

Even coming on here to comment has been hard since I don't really have much to say on most topics. I used to stay on top of things and have at least 440 points constantly, but now I can barely keep myself about 10 points.

So how do you keep the desire to keep your site up an running, especially with all the other things that are around for you to do? I get much more enjoyment out of doing many other things, and would rather spend time on those things. ...

OK, here's the situation.

I have a simple (Dreamweaver) web page with a page background image (the image is a colorful photo of a mountain range) that covers the entire page.

I want to add a simple single color semi transparent rectangle on this page so that you can still see the page background showing through the rectangle.

I created the 'transparent' rectangle in

FireWorks 3

, but after exporting it (GIF format) the rectangle image completely blocks the page background. I tried adjusting the rectangle image opacity but it's never semi transparent and always blocks the page background beneath the rectangle.

This should be so simple! How do I do this?

Any help would be appreciated.

How can I learn to make good designs?
When I look at other people's work, whether it is a website, a logo, a banner, a graphic, or just plain creative things, I get the feeling that I'm never going to be able to make something that good.

So can someone who is at the lowest point can get good enough to come up with great ideas like what I see here? I just want to get good at the design process. It could be anything, making a website, or graphic design, or drawing, but just design itself.

Also some tips on the thought process would help too.

Can someone please illustrate some CSS code that will allow me to place a small image on top of another much larger image on one page? I want to use CSS positioning and index styles to do this, NOT layers.

Image1 will cover the entire page (I have reasons NOT to use image1 as a page background). Then, I want to place image2, and perhaps some text on top of image1.

I know this can be done using CSS (class styles) positioning by setting image1 to a low (0?) Z-index and image2 and other stuff to a higher (1?) Z-index. But I just can't seem to pull it off. Both image1 and image2 wind up as separate images in tandem instead of one on top of the other.

I'm using Dreamweaver3. Some example code would be useful. I think I should be using CSS class styles.

There is more to an effective Website than great looking graphics. In fact there are seven crucial elements every site needs to maximize profits.

1. Balanced Visual Appeal Of course your site needs to have a clean, attractive design. The Web is a visual medium and an ugly website is often the kiss of death.

But your graphics should not distract attention from your marketing message. If your site is an online video game or movie promotion of course it's ok to have a full-blown flash intro and loads of cutting-edge animations, but if you are marketing a more traditional product or service you should avoid going overboard on the visual presentation.
Also a visitor should not have side scroll to view your entire page. This adds a sluggish feel to the browsing experience and should be avoided if at all possible.

2. Awareness of the 60 Second Rule It's safe to assume the average Web surfer will give your site a maximum of 60 seconds of their time unless you actively compel them to stay longer. The truth is statistics vary from market to market, and in many cases your window for first impression can be as short as 8 seconds!

For this reason, the area above the fold is the most important part of any page your visitor might land on. When I say above the fold I am referring to anything that is visible before your prospect has to scroll down the page.

You should use this area to relay your most important message. You might leverage a well-crafted header graphic, a killer headline, or an audio greeting that plays as soon as the page is loaded to pull your visitor into your marketing message.
