Announcements and Rules : Temporary suspension for Account Creation

Hi everyone,

Due to the recent problems with new accounts on our server VPS1, we were forced to suspend account creation for the time being.
You will still be able to post your request, but it will not be handled untill the suspension is lifted (an update will be posted here).
We will try and get this process back on track as soon as possible.

For already hosted users:
To avoid overlooking any account, I urge you to post on the following topic if you are having problems with your account:

Also, please state what the problem is (ex.: can't access cPanel, can't create files or folders, can't access FTP) on that topic. I know some of you already posted that problem on another thread, but it would be a lot safer for everyone if the information was on one topic only.

We will check that post and verify those accounts.

VPS 1 Datacenter/IP change

The VPS was moved to a different datacenter a few hours ago. Unfortunately the ip address also had to be changed (although ip forwarding is setup for 30 days).

The new ips are:
ns1.frihost.net: 67.219.42.79 (main server ip)
ns2.frihost.net: 67.219.42.80

For subdomains nothing needs to be changed. If you have a domain pointed to the nameservers also nothing has to be changed. If you have some special dns configuration where you point some domain name to our ip address, then that one needs to be changed to the new one: 67.219.42.79.

My apologies for any downtime and other problems this caused. Please ask support questions in the webhosting support forum.

Also note that the signature picture currently isn't working anymore for vps 1.

Server 3

I'm proud to announce that we've got a new server with the very original name

Server 3

, and main domain

frih.org

.

It's a pretty powerful server, processor dual core E6600, 2GB of RAM and a 150GB SATA2 hard disk - all running on FreeBSD. It has DirectAdmin as control panel, apache 1, php 5 and mysql 5. I'll also try to put Ruby On Rails on it.

As you might have noticed, I already transferred the frihost.com website, including these forums to the new server. The server change went way better than expected. It only took like 20 minutes to transfer the whole ~750MB database and import it in mysql 5. The dns settings changed almost immediately since I lowered the TTL to 5 seconds. I still have to change the nameservers, though, but that shouldn't have any noticeable effect. The only problem was the server faulty server time, but that was quickly changed.

New accounts are not yet scheduled on Server 3 since a lot of things still have to be setup/changed. More information about this to follow soon.

Since a lot of people have asked during the years how to support/help Frihost, here they are. Please note that this announcement is and will be under construction and will hence get a lot of additions and changes over time.

First of all, we don't accept donations and we will probably never accept them. The same for paid plans and the like.

The best way to support us, is to make this community a better and more popular place. You can do this by being very active yourself by starting good topics and posts, helping others, using our blogs and other features, ...

Apart from that, you can also refer others to Frihost, link to us, talk about us and vote/rate for us.

We appreciate every link you give us and talking about us in other forums/places is definitely appreciated (as long as it isn't spam).

There are quite a few places where you can write review about us and rate us. Most places rank websites by ratings. Please consider this if you rate us.

Please also be honest in your reviews.

ClickHereFree had quite some problems lately after being banned by Google for a while. However, they seem to be back and you can vote for us once again. The higher the ratings, the higher we appear in the top 10.

WebHostingJury also has us in their database, but they need a certain number of reviews to appear in be ranked. It seems to be pretty hard for a review to get in, so please write an honest, elaborate review.

User Pages replacing profiles

I will be replacing the current profiles with the new 'User Pages'. It's basically an extended profile, where you can add a description and where all (public) information about you will be put. Like latest posts, blog posts, ... It's currently a bit ugly and lacks some features, but it's already getting better.

I already replaced quite a few links to it, but there are a lot of links left.

An example: Bondings

You should be able to edit your description, the link is beneath it. There is also a link to the topics you posted in lately. And links to the blog (posts), of course.

There is an RSS feed for everything and one per (public) forum. The links are next to the title.

The RSS feeds include a preview of the first post in the topic. It also links to the first/main page of the topic.

Server 1 now VPS 1

I just moved all the accounts from Server 1 to VPS 1. (users with a .frihost.net subdomain)

If you have a subdomain, there is nothing that you need to do, apart from checking that everything is ok.

If you have a domain with nameservers ns1.frihost.net and ns2.frihost.net, then there is also nothing that you need to do.

If you have custom dns settings, setup somewhere else, like an A record to our (previous) ip address 216.32.68.250, then you will need to change it to 72.249.102.79, the new ip address!

Please note that the accounts will be kept for over a week on server 1. Of course all changes there are not recorded on VPS 1, the new server.

Frihost.com website transfer to different server

I'll most likely be transferring the frihost.com website, including these forums, to a different server. The forums will be disabled for logged in members during the change (since any changes to the database wouldn't be transferred). The profiles are already disabled.

If everything goes fine, the transfer will be done pretty fast.

2 year Frihost

I'm excited to announce that Frihost is now officially 2 years old. I hope you all enjoyed our services and this great community for the past 2 years.

During the last year, a lot of exciting things happened on Frihost.

The Frihost Directory was created and albeit it still lacks a lot of features, it is quite popular and lists quite some websites. We also got a lot of new forums and new staff members and finally reached half a million posts. And last but not least the report system and AWITS, making the forum management a lot easier and providing an easy way for users to report unwanted posts.

I was planning to roll out a few new features to celebrate the birthday, but due to a lack of time, they aren't finished

yet

. They are coming soon however, and a lot of other additions to this community are also planned.

I just removed most Google ads for logged in members. The only one left is the ad between the first and second post in a topic. I might add some of them back, but definitely not as much as it used to be. I will also re-arrange the Chitika ads.

I hope you'll enjoy the forums more now, with much less advertisements. And hopefully this will result in more/better posting and more members.

Just to announce that I changed the maximum amount of points/frih$ per post from 4.5 to 5 points, to encourage longer posts. This will normally be the last increase.

Other ways to earn points/frih$ will be added in the future. I might also add some kind of "buffer" points for long-time members for things like vacations. However, this won't be for the soon future.

Reporting System

I just launched the reporting system. This will provide an official way for members to report unwanted/insulting stuff on Frihost, will make our moderation job much easier and let us catch spam faster. You are free to report anything you don't like, unless you start reporting things for fun and abuse this system.

There are 3 different report sorts available.

Post: The most common report is about a post. To report a post, you need to click on the "Report" link above a post (next to the quote button).
Topic: To report a topic, you need to scroll down and to the left there is a "Report this topic" link.
User: If a spammer or troll is getting on your nerves, you can also report that user. The link is beneath the avatar/user information, also on the viewtopic page.

For each report, you need to provide a description of the problem and

optionally

select a few types that apply to your report. It is always possible that no types apply.

We will try to handle reports as fast as possible. However, we won't be giving any feedback to the people who reported the problem, because this would be taking way too much time and we do not always want to state the reason why we did something. This of course doesn't mean that we don't appreciate reports - any help is useful.

As far as Frihost is able to check, we will try and track if there's some exploit running on our servers related to this situation.

A. As of current Frihost policy, points are deducted at the rate of 1 point per day.

Server 1 downtime (15-02-2007)

Server 1 was down today for several hours. For some reason it wasn't restarted/fixed by the techs who should be monitoring it. And as I didn't have much free time, I didn't visit the forums and simply checked if server 2 wasn't down (assuming server 1 is never down ... ).

Anyway, I'll try to make sure that the monitoring will be working fine in the future so this won't happen again in the future.

Cron jobs (Server 2)

I had to remove all user cron jobs on server 2 as they were causing quite some problems and server load. A lot of them were forgotten ones, others were from exploited accounts and others were just plain too often (some users scheduled several cronjobs every minute).

Please add any important cron jobs back in your DirectAdmin. Also note that they shouldn't be executed more often than once every 10-15 minutes and that you should keep them as fast/small as possible, so they won't crash the server. (So, for your information, executing a cron job, that takes 2 minutes to be executed, every minute is not a good idea. Something similar already happened and causes a lot of problems/load up to crashing the server.)

Aspell removed, crashing server 2

I had to remove Aspell from the server because it was using gigantic amounts of memory, causing a high server load, the server to become unresponsive and the websites not to work. It was the cause of a few downtimes today/yesterday. I don't know whether this was due to someone purposely exploiting it or 'just' a bug/software glitch.

I hope that most of you won't be affected by this removal. It was really necessary to prevent more downtime.

Backups

Some important information and tricks about backups and keeping your data safe.

To start, if you have important information

you should always have some kind of copy or backup in place

. It doesn't always have to be a recent copy, though.

In our case, we do our best to protect the data and do have off-server backups but no system is perfect and always something might happen. You shouldn't place your complete trust into this - not in our case or in any other free or paid host (even the most expensive ones). You should always be sure to have a (recent/less recent) copy of your files.

If you only have html/php files and you uploaded them from your own computer to Frihost, then there is no need for a backup as you already have the files in question on your computer.

If you have some data in mysql (not just default installation of a cms/forum) then it is indeed a good idea to make a backup of it in order to restore it if the data gets lost or something happens to your website (hacked or you accidently removed something yourself).

To make a full/partial backup with DirectAdmin, go to the "

Create/Restore Backups

" link, select the items to include in the backup and click on "

Create backup

". The task will then be put in the queue and should start the next minute. Please wait till it is finished and

do not attempt to create another backup at the same time

.

Once it is finished, go to the file manager and

download it

(or with ftp). It will be stored in /backups/backup-<date>-1.tar.gz . Download it

and afterwards remove it from your account

. Please note that keeping the backup on your account is useless and takes a lot of space. Also,

do not create backups too often

as it generates a lot of server load, definately if you have a lot of data (over 100MB). ...
