NYC's Mayor Bloomberg and Term Limits

I don’t know how widely this has been reported/followed, but NYC’s current mayor has been trying to get term limits “suspended’ so that he can run for a third term. The voters of NYC voted for term limits twice in the past.

I’m against term limits myself because I think voters should always get to decide and imposing term limits curtails that freedom, but something about how this has gone down has a “dirt” feel to it. Initially most of the city council was against removing the restrictions, but Bloomberg has offered some positions in return for changing their votes and has threatened others.

Has anyone been following this?

I totally agree with you. Term limits are bad, as they are against freedom of choice.

Bloomberg is an idiot though. How this man ever got elected, and then re-elected as Mayor of NYC, especially after closing down fire stations after 9/11.

It's funny because when I speak to some people about this, their position is that since Bloomberg is a "finance guy" he's somehow well-suited to guide the city through the next few years. But my stance is wasn't it exactly these "finance guys" who created this mess (or at least had a big part in it)? I would think it would be a disincentive to vote for him.

I too agree that the method that Bloomberg went about all of this has a dirty feeling to it, but I agree with term limits, so maybe I'm not the best judge. Plus I have some pretty low opinions of Bloomberg.
