# Height of a Mountain...

Hi,
this is my first post in science, wanted to share a strange argument and discussion I had with one of my friends...

We were trekking on a mountain and while coming down from 11k feet, we started discussing about the height of Mount Everest.... ya the highest peak of the world..

then a question arised, if the plated of earth are still moving, why isn't height of Mt. Everest increasing?

we tried all logic from Gravitation to Potential energy, momentum etc...

so wanted to ask u ppl, why doesn't height of a mountain increase after a certain point of time and why it keeps on decaying..?

Well, it is getting higher. I think, from memory, the figure is about 2.5cm per year...

Well... as Bikerman said, Mt. Everest is increasing in height by a few centimeters per year. To answer the rest of your questions, mountain ranges vary in height by many different factors. Plate technonics and volcanoes can form mountains, yet all mountains erobe and/or get subducted back into the mantel. Depending on the type of material that forms the mountain, it may erobe at a different pace.

actually this is why our discussion started...
the mt. Everest is not increasing its height..
its remaining between a fixed range...

that day we were also talking abt a physics law which said height of mountain can be maximum 10,000m high..

Have you got any evidence that Mt Everest is not increasing in height, because I'm pretty sure it is?
I took my figures from HERE (although I wrongly remembered the figures - it is actually growing at about 2.4 inches per year, not cm as I previously said).

That would need a lot of conditional statements added on to be anywhere near true...
Consider the taller mountains on other planets or submerged in the ocean.

Wikipedia says Everest is growing at the rate of 4mm a year (or possibly 6mm a year). Your link seems to be talking about the Himalayas in general.

Is there a maximum height for a mountain? I suppose it is possible that above a certain height the rock at the bottom is unable to survive the compression forces or that the crust of the Earth might start to sag.

What is your definition of a mountain-many undersea ranges exist with heights above the sea floor much higher than Everest. These "mountain ranges are most prominant at the mid ocean ridge, where again plates are forcing up the earths crust.
