Hindu - Christian Skirmishes in India

Recently came across this article in the New York Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/world/asia/13india.html

It details the ongoing skirmishes between Hindus and Christians in the state of Orissa in the eastern coast of India.

I think the world will definitely be a better place to live in without religions which preach proselytizing! Just leave people to follow their own religions (be it what has been handed down the generations in their own regions, or what they find out on their own). The problems start to happen when people come in and claim their religion is better, or worse still, they try to convert people to their religion either by force or by doing 'service' with an ulterior motive.

Fellow Frihosters, what is your opinion on this issue? Let us use this thread to have a civil, decent debate on this topic. Looking forward to hearing from all of you!

I think it is for nationalist (/racial) reasons and not for religion.
It's not necessarily because they were Christian that they were burnt down, it was cus they were different. And had they been Hindu's, it would probably still been the same, except having another reason for instance different caste or something.

Usually religion and patriotism (and even religious patriotism) are used to promote wars. They are the tools, not necessarily the causes. The cause in my view is are two (depending on the leader): one is nationalism (the fight for resources e.g. oil, territory consequently is for nationalism) and the other is, personal wealth/power of the leader (using nationalism as a tool - but doesnt really give a damn about the country). Examples I would use is Hitler for nationalism, and Mugabe for personal wealth/power.

The problems seem more to be in the need to have a collective identity, as a primary identity, rather than just accept being an individual with multiple secondary identities.
Like race.
Like religion.
Like nationality (especially in the language you speak).
Like class / caste.

Collective identities always degenerate into an "us" and "them", with them being in opposition.

Religions are usually great, both as sources of comfort & inspiration, and morality. The problem happens when the desire to be better/ different is used to justify the use of violence against those who disagree.

But, gov't (not really public) schools also are willing to force kids to do things they disagree, so as to indoctrinate them.

It's the forceful intolerance that this the problem.

If your eye gives you a problem on account of a cataract, do you pluck out your eye?
Or do you remove the cataract?

It is so sad to here about stories like these. Jesus says in the bible in John 15:20 "No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also". We all will have to face this evil prosecution some time in our lives. We just have to be strong and prepared for that day.

This is nothing but politics.

Has anybody examined that attacks on Christians in India are taking place in States ruled by the BJP or their allies.

This is the old agenda of the extremists again wanting to make India a pure nation.

And some people think nationalism is good....
