In my opinion, the ONLY time anyone is EVER sorry for anything they've ever done is when faced with consequences.

"I'm sorry I killed a man"
"I'm sorry I robbed that bank"
"I'm sorry I cheated"

etc., etc., etc.

WHY is it, that any time ANYONE is sorry, the only reason is that they don't want to have to live up to the consequences? but by that point, it is usually too late anyways. That murderer on death row is as good as fried, no matter how many apologies he's made. The bank robber is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, the cheater is divorced. Perhaps, he's a free man if he can clear his conscience of guilt related to what he's done, unless he's had children with the woman he cheated on whom aren't yet adults, in which case he'll very likely be paying child support until they are.

Same goes for religion.

A sinner isn't truly sorry that they have sinned and fallen short of the glory of their lord and savior, they just don't want to go to hell when they die. That's all it really is.

So WHY, is it, that we cannot be truly sorry for what we've done except when faced with punishment?
And what is it, that scares us so much of the repercussions of our actions?

What if, man did not know fear? What if religion did not exist?

How much different would our world be today?

Most of our morals and values now days, stemmed from religion. Whether you acknowledge it or not.

By a book, written hundreds (and possibly thousands) of years ago, whose word has been taken for granted by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, but it's authenticity still remains to be proven.

Speaking of which, every religion has it's own form of the bible. From the Holy Bible, to the Holy Qu`ran, and everything in between. Either one of the religions are right, or none of them are.

And what if it does happen, that "God" could be dis-proven? Would you stop believing? Of course not. You would be quick to disregard any evidence that a God doesn't exist, as nonsense. That's how deep your religion has been sewn into your brain.

(covering the christian religion in this section, mainly.)
It was taught to you since you were a very young age, and it has been taught to you well. At least once weekly through an organized group of worship called "Church", where you were among others that were bound to the same religious beliefs as you and your parents. Teaching everything from how the earth was created in 7 days, and how man was made from the dust of the earth, to the end times known as the "Tribulation period", where the "devil", the master of all evil, will roam free and wreak havoc and destruction upon the world... and God will let him. Not leaving out any aspect about how the a savior will return to bring you to heaven/paradise/wherever when they return if you've lived a good life, by the rules that this book tells you to live your life by. If you do otherwise, of course, there will be punishment.

Enter: Hell.

This place, this evil ethereal plane, called hell is the last stop for anyone and everyone that has disobeyed the rules they have to live by according to their book. It is a place of eternal pain and suffering beyond anything imaginable.

This place of all evil, is the heart of all religion. The method of control to keep the masses under it's veil. Without it, without something to fear, people would lose all interest in religion and be free to simply do as they pleased, without fear of later repercussions.

Essentially, all religion is, is brainwashing.

Now you may say something along the lines of "Well, what about the people that claim to have religious experiences? or visions?". Well, let me leave you with this: If you truly believe in something to be real, it becomes real to you. Not sure if that made any sense to you at all, but your brain will play tricks on you if you deeply believe something and make it seem like it IS real!

Your brain is such a powerful tool, that you can even manage to deceive yourself! Have you ever told a lie so great that even you had believed it to be true? I have, and it can be a scary thing, that the human brain can be manipulated so easily.

I'd love to say you've ventured on a new frontier, but all of this has been said so many thousands of times it's kind of redundant.

Think this part grabbed me. There are people who are genuinely and sincerely sorry when they have done harm to others, and they are really very few and far between. Then there are people who use "sorry" as a cop-out. I.e., not facing what they did, nor the consequences of what they did. Invariably they will repeat what they did the next time round and complete it with yet another "sorry". "Sorry" in most cases turns out to be part of a double wrong, the act that created harm, and the "sorry" that was a cop-out.

I agree. Say you were to steal from someone. All it would take for most people is to reflect and put themselves in the other person's situation. How would you feel if they had stolen something from you? Then again, could this mental reflection simply be a hypothetical consequence the wrong-doer has created? Could remorse really be the act of imagining a consequence?

Hmmm.. I'm a little tired right now so it's hard to tell if I'm rambling or not. Neutral

Things I feel are important before I post my reply: I used to be an athiest. But now: I belive in something spiritual, I go to church for guidance on this matter, but I don't believe in the bible.

I think organized religion is something created by people with good intentions in an effort to keep those with a low moral standrard from making the world a better place. Before I "found" religion, I thought that anyone who does good works just b/c they think God wants them too was not truly a good person. But then I met these very people at church and realized that if done right, doing things that us nonbelievers see as "things to keep them from going to hell" is really about revieving guidance on what is best for the world, what is best for their life even if they dont like it initially. Now I can see how, even with this knowledge, you could find their actions selfish for it casts the religious as doing good deeds only because they think that is the way to a better life. But we have to get our moral code from somewhere. Me, I got mine a bit from my sister, a bit from my parents, and a lot from observing. I would like to say I was born knowing right from wrong, but I have no idea if I was (shucks...I just cant seem to remember what my thoughts were coming out of the womb). I know that it is bad to steal b/c ultimitly someone has to pay for that item and its not cool to cause others pain, others know its not cool to steal b/c it causes others pain. Religious, ultimitly, have the same reasons for not doing things....they just didnt have to do the thinking required to get there. I had to figure out *why* it hurt people, they simply had to accept it. I don't think either way is worse, mine takes more time and is more solid (in my opinion...feel free to contradict me), but theirs often leads to less doubt. I think prostitutiuon is totally ok (if regulated...i should mention at this point that i do live in the US, not somewhere it is legal..also I should mention im not a prostitute or engage in stuff with one...my opinion comes fromt he fact that i cant figure out who it hursts), but many don't...I may eventaully come to a reason why it is and feel horrible about my precious belief. The christain, however, knows it from early in childhood and never has to have the pain i may experience. To me, religion is about some dudes who, from life experience, figured out what is right and wrong...then to end suffering they made it into a religion and forced it upon people. Others think god knows right and wrong, and he has given us that message to make the world the best place. But at the end of the day....i could care less if the message came from some old guys or God...its just another way to find a moral code and there is noithing wrong with that
