Sound device problem in Audacity

I've just downloaded Audacity onto an Ubuntu PC and I can't get it to playback. I've loaded an MP3, the spectrum is there, but when I try to play it I get the message:-

Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate.

I've not used Audacity before. I've looked through the menus but all I can find is a dropdown list of devices and another for sample rates. Unfortunately they mean nothing to me. Any ideas?

I've got LMMS & Ubuntu Studio but I can't work out how to even start the programs as they don't appear in any menus.

Any help with all 3 would be greatly appreciated.

I've checked the soundcard and got:-

I've set that in Preferences, but still get the same errror.

you should try using a diferent mp3, not all have good sound

DoctorBeaver, it looks like Audacity has trouble accessing your sound device. But is your sound device working in other audio applications? Could you play some audio using other software?

If yes, that calls for some Audacity configuration to make it work and detect your sound device.
If no, then it's not Audacity's fault and maybe you could figure out to make the audio work for your machine. Smile
