Let us share how we can make/get applications/programs as portable programs.
eg: Copy sndrec32.exe from C:/WINDOWS/system32 on your usb and run anywhere on any PC to record and play .wav files.
Its handy, there is no hassle to find where the sound recorder is.
Other possible programs ???
Some years before, I had MS photo editor on my flash drive and I was able to use it on any PC.
It was for win98, however.
Once I lost it.
I liked that very much as I could change brightness, gamma, contrast and could crop it too.
WinXP is my OS now a days and I don't have MS PHOTO ED.
Is is possible to have it again? Not sure, how!!!
Making a program "portable" doesn't mean just copying the source file. Sometimes, if the Program is big enough it needs to be compressed so it is small enough to fit on a USB Flash Drive or something like that.
i use a program call thinstall to make portable proggies..
itz really cool...
i used to upload my thinstalled proggies into some sites...
but then i got banned for some reason..
Let me introduce you a wonderful text Editor 'PlainEdit V1.75'
its is here http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1357
The features i like are;
It supports column mode editing (like in Crimson Editor) [10/10]
It supports formatted (colored) printing (unlike from Crimson Editor) [11/10]
Like other good editors it supports all common features like syntax highlightning, searching (F3) etc.

I loved this photo Editor
Let me quote what I have mentioned in my (some) old quote

See PhotoFiltre at [url=http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=12
]Here[/url] ie at http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=12
as some times we need more than one programs which suits to different needs.
(this may be good choice when we need to change brightness etc.)
Anyhow, site states

You can use a program called Thinstall or another similar one called Thinware..i learned how to make applications portable using Winrar through youtube. You can watch it through one of the videos there. It's really easy and takes literally 2 mins for average sized files about 20 mb...
i've found a lot of programs, such as audacity, paint shop pro 8, magic disc, and even some games run just fine off flash drives, although i've had a hard time getting some games to run or recognize the iso image as a cd
Hi hamza1122
Can you please list the youtube link regarding the usage of thinstall and / or thinware.
I wonder if I can make Dia (alternative of visio) portable.

Hey, i think you have misread what i wrote. i said there's a video of making applications portable through winrar but there are also some of thinstall. Just go to youtue.com and search thinstall or thinware. Or if you want the winrar version just search up "making applications portable- winrar".
Hope that helps!
When making portable applications you first need to strip any unnecessary stuff off the program/game so it's small enough to fit on a flash drive or any other mobile device. Then you need to find all registry keys the program made during the installation of the program and add them in a .reg file so they can be added to the new computer, convincing the program it has been installed on that system. Furthermore local files not found in the application's path (for example Adobe uses the common files system alot) you need to wrap those up and unpack them before opening the program you've copied to the mobile device.
So what does this require, a lot of knowledge about the program and programming skills to wrap the original executable in a program you've written yourself which automatically unpacks any local files and adds the required registry entries. Good luck
Subject: Making portable Apps needs a lot of knowledge
Yes, Flakky is alright.
It is really not very easy to do.
Even sometimes, I think I have made/collected portable application but finally I found it creates/write something in registry. In other words it is not pure portable, though it works on most PCs and sometimes only on PCs with administrative privileges.
Anyway, a while ago I found myself crazy to make a collection of portable application and collected for about 3GB of it.
Now I am not too conscious about it neither I found any perfect portable application maker program.

Been checking out the site, too bad their selections of portable apps are very limited. There are no heavy hitters like Office or Photoshop. But then again I guess because this software are not freeware.

I'm not saying that they have bad choices of portable applications, I'm just saying I would want more applications that i normally use to be available in portable format also.

I use portableapps.com and think they have a pretty good coverage of applications. I can run Open Office and Gimp in place of MS Office and Photoshop and I have access to them anywhere.
You can also install an entire Ubuntu OS on your memory stick and boot from that. I don't do that often, but it has saved a friend with a crashed OS more than once.
Finally, you might consider Google or one of the other online services. I use google notepad and their word processory application quite frequently.
cheers,
david
