How to open eps files?

Hello All

I just received a file of type .eps. I understand that it's some kind of image format, and can be related to using LaTeX.

So I tried opening it in GIMP, which claims to recognise this file format, but it gave me an error.

Does anyone no how to open an eps file (at least for viewing)?

And, just out of curiosity, how and why are these files created (is it some kind of standard? Why not just use jpg etc?) It may be of help to know that I received the file from a University professor.

EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript. It is a vector image format and - as you said - is usually the preferred format for LaTeX documents. Adobe Distiller (comes with Adobe Acrobat fro Windows) can convert it to PDF if I remember correctly. GIMP should be able to open it... if not, try other image processing applications. Btw if you use Ubuntu or other GNOME-based Linux distro, evince can open EPS too.

If you are really confused, just upload the file and let someone convert the format to something more familiar (perhaps PDF or SVG or JPG).
