Victim uses remote logon to nab laptop theft suspect
October 2, 2008
Sydney Herald
A laptop thief got caught - after the computer owner tracked him remotely.
Jose Caceres said he used a remote access program to log on every day and watch his computer being used, and then tipped off police, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old male suspect.
Caceres, 27, of White Plains, said his computer was stolen in early September when he left it on top of his car while carrying things into his home.
....................
But then the suspect typed in a name and address to register on a website, and a few hours later, police caught the suspect.

Cool, sounds like a pretty clever idea.
That's a cool trick. I wonder how he had that set up. What program would help you do that?

Something like VNC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vnc
Yeah nice!
After they stole my laptop twice in two years time, i would like to have a program like that too!
Right now i have a program on my computer (for macbook and macbook pro) what is called ialertu. You can lock your laptop when you are working in a coffeeshop for instance. I f you need to visit the bathroom its just a pain in the ass to pack everything up and bring it with you.
Instead you can "lock" it with a remote (it even makes the car alarm beep beep sound). If people move it a loud alarm goes off, only you can stop by using the remote.
it doesn't stop people to steal your laptop in every case, but it's convient for sure!

That sounds like a much easier way to keep it safe.
I Love it!
I personally like LogMeIn http://www.logmein.com .
I use it to support my family computers. Gone are the days of trying to walk them through something over the phone or having to get in the car and go to them to fix their computer... Well if it boots and can get on to the internet still. But still much better.

In Pakistan, a young man was murdered for some reason. The killers also took away his mobile phone. During investigation, the officer also enquired about the box of his cell phone and took note of the EMEI number. This was leter given to network operators of Pakistan to track. Soon a mobile operator responded with the phone set detected on thier network. The number was traced and calls recorded for some while after which the whole gand was arrested.
That's pretty cool. I'm surprised more crime isn't solved with methods like this.
Networks is useful for polices.
I had many mobiles stolen and lost and never got any one of them back even after reporting the thefts.
The police only act if the phones are used in larger crimes....
neat to know that they actually tracked the thief down like in the movies. I don't think the police would go through the trouble to track down our lost handphones as they would then be too busy doing that everyday and nothing else based on the number of handphones lost or stolen in a day.

They are supposed to crack down on crime and stolen handphones are used more and more in crimes.
Maybe one way to make hand phone theft less attractive would be making them so that the phone network could send a signal to permanently lock the phone if it was reported stolen.
You would need to provide proof of purchase and a police report to the network company to prevent people from abusing the system and getting other peoples phones locked out but I believe it would be feasible.
This just proves how now days thieves are unaware of small security, just be someone steals something doesn't me there fully gonna get away with it. Maybe for a little while but then one lets his guard down and they get caught. Now days there are heart be detectors for cars to let you know someone is hiding in it, if you break in through a windows you get sprayed with a liquid only noticable by black light. Event some placed have facial recognition for instant detection. it's better to get a job and save for what you want.
I think that a computer can be tracked via its mac address.
Is it Dell or another constructor that offers to keep this unique identifier and then if your laptop is stolen and if the thief put it on the network it can be detected then.
I think that any device that is somehow connected to a network could be quite easily tracked.
Nowadays it also happen with car. Now it is more like an extra service for luxury car but with more and more electronics embarqued into the cars I think that it will become a very common service.
Life is getting harder for thieves.
Wow. Score for technology.
Hmm. I seriously want to try this out. This seems fun.

Is there a PC freeware counterpart to iAlertu?
