Favorite and Least Favorite Science Fields

Afaceinthematrix
With science becoming more and more specialized, it's now impossible (well maybe not impossible, but pretty difficult) to know everything that's known in science. So there are now many different science fields to choose from... which is your favorite and which is your least favorite? My favorite science class that I have taken so far has been physics. I like the math involved in it (I took my first, and only, physics class at the same time as I took my first calculus class, so the classes were very similar at some times). Also, physics was intuitive at many times, which made it easy to understand. Also, the teacher did many demonstrations, so between the demos and labs, I was able to clearly see how everything works. My least favorite science class so far (although I still enjoy, I just enjoy it the least) is Chemistry. I'm taking it right now at my university and I don't find it as interesting. It's also far less intuitive. We're dealing with things that are measured in nanometers, so I can't see any of it. Unlike physics, we aren't dealing with things that we've experienced our whole lives (like gravity). It's far harder to learn.

Which are your favorite and least favorite science fields?

Most favorite... would be physics, especially the cutting edge of it, not the mundane every day stuff. Advanced math and number theory is interesting too, but I'll have to do a lot more learning before I can really appreciate that. *second edit* Oh yeah, and don't forget electronics, computers, algorithms and information theory either!
Least favorite, well that'd be psychology or sociology, if those could even really be called sciences. Too much of those two seems to be bogus, random guessing, or based entirely on various scientists' own world views.

Of course Physics, it's the science that questions the very foundations of science. ... the universe, cosmology and astrophysics are fascinating ... so are optics and nuclear physics ...

Same. I am mesmerised by the laws that govern us, and the 99.99999999% of existence that we can't even imagine.

Well, it looks like nearly everybody likes physics the best...

Who was it who said "All science is either physics or stamp collecting"?

Yeah, Physics is the way to go ...

Chemistry isn't that bad but Biology is really awful ... I just don't see the point in it !!!

Zoology is okay but plants and flowers and micro-organisms are really annoying ... who cares about them???

No offence to anybody.

my favourite science is Geology

I had to do several geology units with my degree (enviro science) and i loved them...Particularity liked Geomorphology and Soil Science

Worked out well coz i work at a Quarry now too Smile

Chemistry right up there too...Love Chemistry, especially Organic and Enviro Chemistry

Least favourite would be another unit i had to do for my degree, Plant Ecology...SNOOZE Evil or Very Mad

Well, I studied and still enjoy reading about Archaeology and Anthropology. I wish I had been able to finish my degree. The ways people do things, and why they do them, religion, culture, and social structure have always fascinated me. For example, the modern uproar about marriage really gets me... so many people in the USA truly believe that marriage is and has always been for just one man and one woman, when that is patently untrue... there have been many variations on marriage throughout history. It's just one example of people becoming so ingrained by the culture in which they live that they cannot (or will not) imagine things being any other way. People have had so many variations of how to live through the ages, from tribes to modern cities, each with their own reasons and religions and taboos and mythologies... such an amazingly complex tapestry.

I also like physics - I don't know much about the math behind it, but the idea of figuring out how the universe works... well, those folks who get paid to look up at the stars and ask "Why"... seems to like they are pretty lucky folks. But I get lost with simple algebra, so it's not the field for me.

Marine biology and marine and wetland ecology have also long appealed to me, mostly because of my childhood spent on the Gulf Coast exploring the marshes, swimming in the Gulf, and wondering the the diverse beauty of the life there and how fragile it all is.

A lot of people care about plants and flowers and microorganisms. I like plants; they're interesting. And anyone in medicine cares about microorganisms.

Biology, especially molecular biology. Molecular biology combines Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to describe and explain life.

i cannot stand chemistry.. physics is my bag o' chips. big fan of thermodynamics as well

Anthropology is my field, and if not for anything else I'd say that's my favorite just to justify my academical direction... Smile

Though put pretty bluntly, this is the discipline (together with its siblings) able to explain much of the basic stuff surrounding us as a cultural species (or try to) - not least why we in the first place are interested in science and putting up questions like: "are western scientific traditions the only ones with patent on the truth?".

We're able to work on both a diacronic level, looking into the (fx. cognitive) mechanisms having shaped the human cultural tendencies in the first place, and a syncronic view on what exactly shapes the contemporary social world...

No offence, but if you are going to use technical words as part of your discipline (and I have no objection to that where necessary, but I don't think it was here) then you should define them and you should spell them correctly.
The words in question are;
Diachronic - something happening over time
Synchronic - occurring or existing at the same time.

I LOVE Astronomy (Study of the Universe) I think Astronomy has alot to offer and is a very interesting subject. Our future pretty much "depends" on Astronomy and it is a never ending field of discovery.
(Also there are plenty of jobs Very Happy)
