Firefox 3: to upgrade or not to upgrade?

ocalhoun
I'm using firefox 2 right now, with a great many add-ons installed.
I was thinking of upgrading to the 3 release, but the problem is that several of my add-ons (a couple of them essential ones) won't be supported! (Fire FTP and foxmarks being the most important of the unsupported ones.)

My two questions:
1: Does firefox 3 have the capabilities of these add-ons already built in, so that it doesn't need them?
2: What real improvements does version 3 have, anyway, that would be worth giving up these add-ons for?
weableandbob
I haven't noticed much of a difference between firefox 2 and 3, so if you're worried about losing add-ons, i'd just stick with 2 for now
fadirocks
FF3 has smart location bar that will find stuff for you while typing a keyword or site based on most used link or search in history if that keyword exist somewhere on title but not URL
Bookmarks are better organized and adding a bookmark is just bit more advanced
Bookmark library is now can be backed up and restored (on ff2 it was import and export which works differently)
Smart Bookmarks are useful too Smile most visited, recently booked and go through all tags
back and forward function is more advanced instead 2 scrolls for back and forward you have only one that points where exactly you're at
I think something improved about RSS
some CSS stuff improvement
some security upgrades on blocking some certain sites

wait why am i trying to figure out what i noticed i can umm link you to this
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0/releasenotes/

and tell you the truth whatever project didn't update to FF3 I wouldn't trust that add-on because there might be security issue and nobody is checking it out or getting fixed!!!

FireFox3 is great to try. when you try it ,you will never give it up.
ocalhoun
So, a rough equivalent to foxmarks exists for it, but no FTP software? FireFTP is the FTP software I use the most, so that would be a problem; I think I'll wait to upgrade until they come out with something equivalent to that.
HalfBloodPrince
Just use FileZilla then until they get an FF3 version of FireFTP. Very Happy
silverdown
I have not upgraded yet because I downloaded it to my laptop and I really don't enjoy it without all my favorite add-ons. As well as the extra info about each domain is kind of annoying to me. Other then that it is fine, but I am waiting for more add-ons to be Firefox 3 supported
tsuvik
I you update it ASAP. And concerning the add ons compatibility, its been a while since ff3 has released and therefore almost all addons are made ff3 compatible now. So No Issues there.
lastelement0
maybe its just me but im not a big fan of all the add-ons. some of them are nice, dont get me wrong, but having so many of them just seems like they bog it donw. maybe thats why ive been a fan of google chrome, when i do go on windows. haha

1. Some of them, yes, and most of the add-ons have been updated to version 3.
2. The most noticeable improvement are tab switching & overall speed, and stability too i guess.

So I really recommend it to upgrade.

Firefox 3 supports Foxmarks, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Firefox 3 has the cool ability to quickly search through all of your history and bookmarks just by typing into the address bar. I haven't had to go into my Bookmarks menu for some time now with that feature.
You should give it a try and see if you like it.
Josso
Loosing 2 addons might be worth it for the improved speed and efficency of FF3 imho.
RosenCruz
wait a little more in my opinion..3.x is really fast but not worth to give up your add ons Cool

I am actually really surprised that nobody has noticed that FireFTP is AVAILABLE for Firefox 3.0. Go to the Mozilla page for FireFTP. It works, the version is up to 3.0-3.0.*. I've installed it and it works perfectly fine.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684 ----- Proof of working FireFTP

Also, FoxMarks works with 3.0. I'd upgrade to 3.0 as soon as possible, fix some bugs and whatnot.

With that good news I have no reason not to upgrade anymore... I'm going to do it!

Enjoy the new Firefox! Smile And enjoy your old, but upgraded, addons!

By the way, you might noticed that Real Player plugin is compatible to download videos from Firefox.

I found Download Helper, really a helper which compensated RealPlayer's plugin's requirement.

You may try it. Its here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/3006

Its drop down menu gives clear idea what can be saved that is being played.

Mozilla Firefox 3 has definitely a lot of improvements with your surfing experience. There is only one minus to it I encounter quite often (that was not present on Mozilla Firefox 2):

Quote:
Close Firefox

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

[OK]

As far as add-ons are concerned, you might just want to give the new version a try... And if you later you find out that you can't live with the add-ons you lost upon upgrade, you can always roll it back to the precedent one.

Well ... I'm on firefox 3 few weeks now and I must say that it's realy worth to migrate from firefox 2 to this new browser. It's faster, and the while interface is realy intuitive.
I was using firefox 2 long time ... almost from the beginning and I haven't any problems with this new version.
If You afraid just use mozbackup and save Your firefox, then install FF3 - if You don't like it - just go back to previous version (but on 99,9% You will like this new FF3)

One more good thing I like is
WebMail Notifier

WebMail Notifier checks your webmail accounts and notifies the number of unread emails...
Supports : gmail, yahoo, hotmail, daum, naver, empas, nate and more ..

You may give it a try
it is at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4490

-- Regards

By the way, now a days (with FF3) I rarely face the opening error (... already running..)
So I stick with FF3.

firefox is okay, but the longer it runs the more memory it sucks up. I don't think a web browser should use 60-80mb of RAM for a little surfing. Opera uses only half that. BUt opera kinda sucks.

Personally, I'm running the nightly builds of minefield, which is what ff will eventually become. I've also given webkits a shot. It's much faster.

has anyone else noticed firefox 3 crashing too many times. i am so annoyed at this point, i have started using IE / Opera. every single update i think the crash problem would be fixed but doesnt seem to.

my recent upgrade to firefox 3.1 beta also seems to crash all the time. and no its not just me. my work computer has the same problem and my co-workers also complain about that. i think firefox team needs to spend some more time on QA than working on implementing useless features like Anonymous Browsing AKA Porn mode. i think the anonymous browsing mode is way too exaggerated feature. you can't really be anonymous once you are online. you can be traced all the way back to your computer date and time.

i dont think any hard core cracker (not hacker) uses firefox to break into someon's computer.

just my 2 cents.

I think your problem is rather unique there, and possibly caused by something else on your computer. Firefox 3 has never crashed on me yet.

You should actually move to firefox 3, make yourself used to the new things in it, start using smart bar, the awesome bookmarking, and you should really really ditch the addons that the lazy developers have not bothered to upgrade.

If the addon developer dint bother to upgrade his code at all, it could mean that he is not bothered about the security, or he is not at all thinking about new features for it. Why exactly should you settle for outdated stuff like that, search for alternatives...

By moving to firefox 3, you are not only securing, optimizing your browsing, but are staying in lead with the other features, and techniques that others have been using for months...

And really... now with all that private browsing mode, and tracemonkey in firefox 3.1 you definately want to use it, so why not start right now... Smile

Sub: Forms / Data entries get cleared if you return to Firefox

In recent version of Firefox I observed very annoyed behavior of Firefox.

It happened many many times and I am sure it is a bug.

What it is?

When you fill some form / input text area and you do not work for some time (especially if you return to Firefox again [say after going to XYZ Media player, changing volume]), you will find no more typed text.

Although I am developing the habit to use text editor then to paste it in Firefox but it is really bad.

Isn't it?

Did any body else found it?

If you haven't already upgraded, you should do. Firefox 2 is no longer being developed which means it will soon start falling behind in terms of security.

This news today:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9122500

Firefox 2 will no longer support anti-phishing - google is retiring the old version of it's service which Firefox 2 relies on.

Upgrade! should you even be asking that question?? heheh

You should upgrade immediately Very Happy

I didn't get on with Firefox 2 due to to the massive probelms with memory management.

Firefox 3 is the fastest yet, plus all the additional built in security is vital these days.

Better yet, I could upgrade months ago...
Good thing I already did, because traveling back in time is difficult.

I don't care much for firefox 3. I don't really like the "awesome bar." It's gotten better with time though.
Da Rossa
Of course you should upgrade, who thinks otherwise is control freak. If you care about your 76 extensions, think that the developers didn't start that hard work in order to, later, discontinue their extensions when a new Firefox version is released; they wanna keep up with.

Also, if one or two extensions don't work, try installing them in compatibility mode.

Sub: Fixed : Forms / Data entries get cleared - Not anymore

Regarding my previous post,
I would like to update/mention that the following problem does not happen any more.

Quote:
When you fill some form / input text area and you do not work for some time (especially if you return to Firefox again [say after going to XYZ Media player, changing volume]), you will find no more typed text.

So I again started living with Firefox. I found time plug-in/addon that shows different countries time near status bar. Anyway, I like Firefox.

Sub: Firefox is trouble free now except some minor issue

Since my last post, I hardly found any issue with FireFox.

+ its ever admirable search bar.

I use Microsoft Internet Explorer for some Government websites
like

QPIP "Québec Parental Insurance Plan > QPIP"

Anyway, Forum/this discussion may be closed anytime.

Sub: Firefox is now even better than before

By the way Firefox is now in consideration with Government websites. For example you may check with CRA/QPIP/ClicSequr (canadian web sites), some works fine.

No doubt, firefox people are working great.

I would like to say, downloading via firefox is amazing.

Again, this discussion/forum may be closed anytime.

surely you should pgrade. it is not just the looks. they are using a new javascript rendering engine, tracemonkey is much faster than the previous version. please upgrade.

sub: Downloading offline/stand-alone installer of Real Player

Can some one please let me know from where I should download Real Player winch will give me facility to download any video from within Firefox.

When I go to www.real.com, it downloads a downloader.

In other words, I need stand alone installer or offline installer.

Thanks in Advance and Best Regards
sanalskumar
I use firefox 3.5 and is much much better than firefox 2 for me. Faster than firefox 2 and wide variety of addons to choose from. I recommend to try it once.

Sub: Real Player off line installer

Finally I have found following link, from where you can have standalone/offline Real Player installer.

http://software-dl.real.com/free/windows/installer/R41R02F/RealPlayer11GOLD.exe

Source is given below:
http://apdubey.blogspot.com/2008/08/real-player-11-gold-offline-installer.html

By the way it is compatible with new Firefox regarding 'download this movie' option.

Hello everyone, there's one case that I have experienced that when I updated my firefox it the next time i try to use is a problem showed up which it didn't load properly and I can't surf/browse anymore using the browser. But when I tried using IE i can surf. that mean all my connections are working fine. The only problem is that my firefox won't browse anymore. I believe the problem cause by some blocking software the internet security on my computer which after updating it the software didn't recognize the new updated browser and it blocks all my connection from there. I am still isolating the problem for now to check everything what really cause this. Thank you.
