My hard drive keeps working for no apparent or obviuos reason with Vista. I have switched off the indexing and defrag. What could it be.

It's probably swapping out RAM - it does that quite a bit. How much RAM have you got on your machine?
If you have a ReadyBoost compatible USB device you might try plugging that in, enabling ReadyBoost and see if that makes a difference.

Or it may be a virus or may be google desktop.

Run Process Monitor and find out for yourself !
If will let you know the details of the process that causes any disk I/O activity. (apart from numerous other features).
