Google Docs for academic paper

leontius
I just found out that Google Docs can be very useful for collaborative project. In my case it is writing an academic paper with other people. However formatting in Google Docs is severely limited - you cannot have footnotes or image captions.

How do you work around this issue? Or is there any other service similar to google docs that has features like inserting footnotes and image captions (and even better, cross-referencing and figure numbering (e.g. Fig 2.2 ...))?

Perhaps you can work out a system in which footnotes are placed in a different font or color inside the main text. Illustrations can be done a similar way. Once the document is completed, someone can export it to word and format it the correct way.

That is what I was thinking on doing, but obviously if there's something better... It will be also impractical to do if the work is big (with hundreds of pages).
