Falacies

Anyone familiar with them?
I learned about 9 out of 21 of em today in philosophy. Dayum they are easy to remember but when it comes to arguments, I can't seem to define the type of falacy the argument is commiting...

Well, firstly they are FALLACIES.
Here is a nice site which runs through the major fallacies and gives an example of each.

Agghhh, I had to learn these for "Critical Thinking" at college. Plus how to write a well-reasoned argument. I turned up to nearly every lesson with a well-reasoned argument as to why I shouldn't have to do Crit. Thinking. Every time I was hit by the "Appeal to Authority" fallacy by my teacher ("Because I say so").

It's funny looking at examples of fallacy though.
Quote:
Bill sets out several plates with bread on them. After a couple days, he notices that the bread has mold growing all over it. Bill concludes that the mold was produced by the bread going bad. When Bill tells his mother about his experiment, she tells him that the mold was the cause of the bread going bad and that he better clean up the mess if he wants to get his allowance this week.

Well thanks for the correction. Fallacies are confusing and I am currently trying to master each fallacy. I have a midterm coming up in 2 weeks and I need to pass this. Thank you for the source! Much Appreciated.

Logical fallacies? This is actually one of my favorite Wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies

Pretty comprehensive... And it's very fun to just list off one of the more esoteric ones whenever someone uses it. It seems they're very hard to respond to.
Indi
i like this one: http://www.fallacyfiles.org/

The best part about it is the taxonomy of fallacies, which helps you figure out exactly which fallacy is being used.

AHHH More sources, thanks guys. I'll be posting a few fallacies and hopefully ya'll can help me label them. Very Happy

Nice site Indi - I like that better than the one I suggested (now duly bookmarked Smile )

dcfive65 - don't expect us to do your homework for you. As an ex-teacher I have to be careful, or the teaching police will arrest me for unprofessional conduct Smile

Wow... I like the fallacyfiles site... Now I need to go spend some time digging through the ones I'm unfamiliar with... Which might take a while.
