Global warming time bomb trapped in Arctic soil: study

Quote:
PARIS (AFP) - Climate change could release unexpectedly huge stores of carbon dioxide from Arctic soils, which would in turn fuel a vicious circle of global warming, a new study warned Sunday

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080824/sc_afp/scienceclimatewarmingcarbonarctic

every month or so we hear new evidence that the way we have treated our planet - selfishly, with total disrespect for balance of forces and consideration for a sustainable future - will be kicking us in the teeth in the not so distant future.

every month or so we hear polititians all over the place talk the talk but not walk the walk - after all, what they may have to say if they would be honest could upset the voting public.

every month or so we hear big business find excuses and shifting of blame to every corner of the world - except their own backyard.

every 3 years or so we see the united nations holding another summit talking big and making recommendations - which are then mostly disregarded by the politicians and bug business - after all, the first group runs our lives and the second group pays the first one to say what's profitable for them.

every DAY this world, of which we all are just custodians for the future, is getting sicker and sicker. i'm not a tree hugger by any account but one thing i know - nature doesn't take things just lying down - we see the kick-backs all over

AND STILL WE DON'T DO ANYTHING APART FROM SITTING ON OUT FAT LAZY ASSES AND COMPLAIN.

cheers??????
for how long i wonder!!!!!!

I am always curious as to what well destroy our society first.

A. Disease
B. Global Climate Change
C. Nuclear Holocaust
D. Meteor
E. All of the above

I say either one, the sooner the better. The world we live in is a sick, sick place.

It's only a matter of time until one wipes us out.

F. Our own machines take over

Fixed. Depending on the nature of it, F could be one of the best or one of the worst possibilities.

But climate change is not a big deal. It may change some things, may make yet a few more species extinct at our hands, but it won't wipe us out by a long shot.

I pretty much agree with ocalhoun on this one. I think climate change is massively over rated.
Even the predicted changes or well within the historical climate range although the time scale is actually the point of the alarmists and there may be something in that.
I bet something else will come along within 20 years and climate change will be forgotten.

F. Our own machines take over

Funny, I just finished a book about this yesterday, "Prey" by Micheal Crichton.

The latest holy grail, nano technolgy, could turn around and bite us in the butt.

A pretty good book for the subject, the only really unbelievable part being that it was set in the present, not the mid- to far-term future.

Over population is what will destroy our society, which would result in either a big virus like Bird Flu infecting most of us, or some crazy country (perhaps the only one that used it) nuking us and killing most of us again.

Oh yea of course, sorry forgot to mention the machines. I do think however that global warming will cause more issues and deaths then most people think.

I mean consider Africa, they have had record droughts and record heat already that have caused millions of deaths from starvation, just imagine how bad it will be if even the average temperature rises 1 deg. It is expected to rise ever more than that so I can't fathom how bad it will be.

But like I said in my first post that'll only happen if something else doesn't get us first.

Our world is going to hell in a hand basket some way or another a lot sooner than we think. Hopefully we are all prepared to die sooner than we think, and know where we are going after death.

i'm confused.

you fixed coolclay's post by:
B. Deleted

but you didn't fix the global warming problems? and what if amongst the "few more species at our hands" which get extinct are we as well?

We won't be. It would take far more than some sea level changes, storms, and droughts to wipe out humans. (Unfortunately...)
These changes will happen so slowly that we'll adapt and overcome them without hardly even noticing that we are doing so. Little will actually change.

I am totally sure that we are soon to witness the devastating effects of climate change on this planet. I don't know why nobody listens, nobody really does listen, and care! Their children and their grand children, no one that they care about, just them, their belly.
Mad

Some immediate change needed. Not just politicians, boy, you, me, everyone else. Do not as much as you can, do more than you can. Think of all the possibilities. Why are you mum? You say sin and everything else? and say repent for your sins? and do sin all the time? negligent , eh? Puhllllleeez, It is time you not sinned! Jesus or nobody will do nothing for ur sins this time. To repent, you must change. Change Now!

I know nobody will care still. And that only something like judgement day can be possible , soon enough, if this is to go on.
ocalhoun
^Er, global warming, even if it were very fast paced, would be more of a 'judgment century' than a 'judgment day'...
winmark
None of the above said reasons. This world will come to an end when we'd loose hope. World was never a beautiful place, we have came so far just because some of us worked to make it a better place. Smile
