There are many like, Zetaboards, Invision Free, VB, IPB, Phpbb, and more..
Whats your favorite?
I like ZetaBoards they are active there are many designs for it
easy modding and coding and etc. I really enjoy it!
EDIT BY RVEC:
From now on this topic is the official topic to talk about which forum is the best. Which means that all future topics about recommendation a forum will be closed just like it was the case for a cms. If you think you should have your own topic pm me and convince me.
Invision boards all the way for me. I like how VB works, but it's too expensive.
I agree..VB and IPB are way too much (VB is better though)
Yea i was a huge IF fan until they made ZB.
Any day PHPBB ... it's the best ... it's free, easy to use and popular!
I agree phpBB is the best forum software, the wheels of Frihost Forums. I think there is big difference between phpBB and VB or phpBB and IPB. I would really take phpBB because, as a website developer, it gives me a huge chance which the paid crabs couldn't...
IPB knocks everything out of any forum software I've tried. phpBB simply gets blown down without even putting up a fight.
Star Wars Fanatic
I'd have to agree with that, I really like IPB.
It is expensive, but you are getting the best.
I hate phpbb the most..it cant give you those looks or features like IPB/VB/ZB/IF can!
I don't see SMF as a choice which is definitely one of the best forum software out there.
Version 2 is coming out soon.
It's very secure, got lots of features.
making this one a stickey
I like Vbulliten and PHPbb. They both are cool
IPB for administration purposes and phpBB for design purposes.
VB and phpBB is easy enough for a newbie. But the code of phpBB is not very eligant. So consider the code quiality of forums if you are going to modify it to suit your site.
Shouldn't someone edit the first post to include SMF, which is one of the most popular and one of the best boards/forums available?
None of them.
MyBB Rules, sorry
It's free, and looks just like vB. That's because they copied some source code
IPB for the protection, phpBB3 for the style.
Does phpBB still have a reputation for security problems or is version 3 secure and safe? I was just wondering because it used to have a bit of a reputation i think for security flaws.
I have to say that I like ZetaBoards and phpBB.
phpBB offers more administrative capabilities, and you can hold a tighter grip on the forums and customize user permissions and not just group permissions.
I like ZetaBoards mainly for it's ease of use, and how easy it is to setup.
I like phpBB
But this is free and very good
I have worked with PHPBB installing it and modifying it. I find the community very helpful and the script easy to handle.
I have used SMF for years now and I never had to moved to another script. I guess I never will too. Not with recent changes in VP license policy. But I think there should be myBB in the list. Which is becoming popular rapidly.
VB is better but phpbb will always be a favourite of mine
Seems like i'm the only one using woltlab
But holy c*** that's expensive! $70 for the cheapest option, no upgrades available, with installation costing $100 for someone to do it for you, and removal of branding costing $140. If you've got the money to splash on it, you're not going to have a website which can put up with the branding, so you will be spending at least $210. The installation is a rip off: it takes me no more than 15 minutes to install any kind of software, phpBB takes under 5 minutes. Suppose I charged $100 for an installation of phpBB, I could do 4-6 in an hour (allowing for communication), racking up a whopping $600 an hour.
well my dad is paying for it, after he moved to england he wanted a way to keep in touch with his friends her, msn clearly didn't do the trick
But there's also a free version of the forum, Burning Board lite, that one is also pretty good (I prefer it over smf and vb etc.)
Link to Burning Board please. I'd like to check it out.
As i see the results did not surprise me a lot. Phpbb is an unbeattable opponent in forum making and administrating. But there are some issues where I would use none of those forums. Sometimes, when making pages in Content Management Systems , more important is to keep the compatibility and make it integrated the most. When I was making the page based on Joomla I chose Kunena Forum rather than other more popular and perhaps better forums. It lowered performance of forum and its options but made me a lot easier to make the page, considering less problems with installing it. Kunena is a module for CMS , so the installing part was only to download package and install it on Joomla.
Agreed. Taking another CMS as an example, Drupal comes with a basic forum out of the box, and this can be extended as much as you like with several contrib modules. Advanced Forum is a must, then adding extra features where needed results in a forum perfectly integrated with the rest of your website.
its very useless im using punbb , i like that cuz its very basic and useful
I use phpBB3 as it can have everything I need. sorry for my bad english
I've forums on my site setted up by using PHPBB and they are quite good.I mean administrating the forum and control panel and setting all the things is not a tough work to do...
I'll vote for PHPBB.
i go with phpBB it is very nice and easy to modified for.
vBulletin is really good, but I would never spent 213 for a forum engine considering the free alternatives, same with IPB. (vB vs IPB would be a hard choise if money not a problem.)
I never got to like SMF, and other forum engines just don't have that big community as my choise phpBB (3), and community, support, addons, etc is really a plus.
I like SMF
I like vBulletin forum very much.
Because it have more feature than phpBB.
Apparently phpBB4 will be build using the Symfony 2 framework. Which is a Very Good Thing and essentially forces the phpBB4 developers to write extensible, well-structured code that is easy to extend via plugins. No more delving into the code to install mods, quite likely all you'd need to do would be to drop the files that came with the mod into a "plugins" directory and enable it via the admin control panel. Or, if they're really feeling ambitious, a package manager similar to those which are part of most Linux distributions for mods (or plugins, as they should now be known).
Features aren't really the most important thing though. A forum software could have tons of features, but lack the security needed to make sure that your information was safe, or that spambot's wouldn't be all-over your forums posting random links and nothing would be done about it.
From my favorite top 5 they would be:
5. Burning Board
I like IPB, but since it isn't free, i'd go for phpBB, wich has also a big community.
You may post your choices for either your best drift track(s) or favourite drift track(s) in GT4 below (or both)
the format should closely follow:
Favourite Drift Track - 'track name here'
Best Drift Track - 'track name here'
This is not meant to be a debate, just a place to give your opinion.
There is no need to discuss tracks that you enjoyed in GT3, or in real life for that matter - this is a GT4 forum.
Nor is their a need to discuss your line or technique around the track. That discussion can be saved for placement in other threads, as they appear.
I may place a statistical table or graph here in the first post updated weekly once opinions begin showing up, just to give everyone a idea of the general distribution of the tracks mentioned.
Please do not resort to attacking the intent of this thread - I know it will be viewed negatively by some, just as they were in the GT3 Drift Forum. It is meant to reduce congestion on this forum and add to the community as a whole. If there is anything you would like to speak to me about, you may do so privately with the PM system. To clutter this thread by making an unrelated post is unnecessary.
Now, with that said, please enjoy yourselves and Please do what you can to stick to the topic.
mine vote is for phpbb
because it is easy and free of cost
i have used it easy to instal and easy to manage
Vbulletin is best of all time ,although in free category i like SMF the most , but phbb has many integrations like wordpress, joomla etc
Poll is a bit outdated and should be edited since Mybb is missing I think that it is the best free competition to paid forum boards like IPB and vBulleting. It has a lot of useful plugins and modern themes. It is under heavy development and fixes are realized really quickly. I really enjoy forum style (very similar to vBulletin) and this is the main reason why I'm using it. But I have to admit that administration panel in phpbb is a bit better and cleaner but you could download additional plugin to make mybb panel even better
As a developer and an experience of more than an year and half with mybb
I would suggest mybb as the best available free forum script.
The reason is simple it is simple and powerful.
It has lots of plugin system and the system is so simple that you would barely need knowledge to administrate a site.
Phpbb in this regard fails as it's plugins always give errors with requirement of template edits.
Smf is way too ancient and it's development is a snail track.
The other board in recent past I fell in love is Vanilla forums.
It evolved a lot though plugins are limiting it is simple and powerful.
Now coming to the paid ones xenforo is choice one and next comes IPB.
They are well developed feom their front end which attracts the users drawn into the site.
Mybb it's the best ... it's free
Do not miss:
The only one I have used is PHPBB and that seemed to work really well.
My favorite has to be vBulletin. Just the way you are able to set up permissions, the infraction system (a lot smoother than a warning system in my opinion), and the other vast amount of options is awesome! Unfortunately, I cannot afford it. I've been a Moderator on a vBulletin forum and it was really awesome; I was also an Administrator on another, I just loved the way it was set up. Got really used to it, so now I am practically loathing all of these others because none of them have the infraction system I am so badly yearning for.
I think VBB is the best forum. Because it have many advanced features.
IF isn't a forum software, it's a host. IF uses a modified version of IPB 1.3, and is considered a forum host.
Out of the list provided in the poll, IPB is definitely the best one, although SMF is the best free forum software.
MyBB, SMF and phpBB are all cool and free stuff. Works like a charm if you know what you are doing. Freely hosted forums are also nice for people who do not wanna deal with hosting and installation issues.
If we are talking in terms of stand alone forum software, and only going by whats in the poll options then i would have to cast my vote to phpBB its by far the most functional and customizable stand alone forum software in the voting options.
I like PHPBB very much.. May not look very attractive but is a very distinct forum script.. Have a plenty of plugins to modify almost everything in the forums.. Still has some bugs..
For guys thinking of punBB, I d recommend fluxBB which is a developed version of punBB and still under development.
informer is not doing well on updating and developing punBB. But the project is open source and fluxBB is team doing a great job on developing it
Honestly I have always prefered PhpBB, had been using it making forums since I was 8. Next to that, I like the new version of Invision Power Board.
The answer is MyBB, hands down. Why:
Of course, this is just the cliff-notes of a very versatile and powerful tool.
For free boards, phpBB. For paid boards, vBulletin. I dont have much experience with the others.
