Does Google Map's Street View invade privacy?
Google just launched Street View for Australian cities yesterday. It's quite brilliant but some people are complaining about invasion of privacy. I personally don't mind and like the product. People can request Google to take off or blur out objects or faces when they feel it is not appropriate. What do you all think?
They also started in the Netherlands with Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I do think they just crossed the line. People didn't give there permission, so Google has no rights taking pictures of them or there property. Something like you don't want to be displayed in a commercial of soap just because you run around in the city with a very white shirt. Google actually get's paid by taking pictures of people due the advertising they put next to it.
/EDIT: I'll add that you propably won't be spending hours trieing to figure out where in the city you might have been photographed. The blurring is just a distraction from the criminal actions (to put it a bit extreme

I personally am neutral on the topic. I don't know what kind of legal stuff is involved and if it really is considered a legal invasion of privacy. any company or individual could so the same thing Google is doing, with proper funding of course, would that be a problem? Or are people just complaining because Google is a largely used company and the images are more accessible. I will remain neutral, mainly because I don't care that Google is doing it, even if I am in one of the images somehow.
I don't think this is legal in Norway, so I presume this service never will come here. It does not matter that I can contact Google to get my face blurred out. I will probably never know if Google have a street photo of me, extremelly drunk, for my boss and aunts to see...
How is it invasion of privacy? When you walk out the door everything that you see, Google pretty much has a right of displaying. It's not like they're going into people's houses or private property to take pictures. Although there was an incident where I believe they did trespass, but that is a fair complaint.
As long as they take their pictures on public property, I think its legal. There have been some incidents where people got caught doing things they probably wouldn't want everyone online to see. I've seen a few blog posts that highlight some of the stranger ones.
Personally I think it is fine.... as has been stated you can request that they blur things...
Provided they aren't showing inside private property, I don't see the problem. Personally, if I see one of the camera cars I'll try and get them to take a picture...

Whoa, man Google is coming out with new ideas everday. I love the idea, it's great for tourists that want to go view sights, so they can scope out what they're doing before the trip.
Great use of Google's time!

Privacy is still not defined properly and may never will be since it is too hard. Journalists, or Paparazzis as some may call, are going around taking footages of events and celebrities, etc and publishing them on magazines and television. Traffic updates from the helicopters show video footages of roads, cars and houses from a distance. So what Google is doing, in my opinion, is no worse than the media (in most circumstances). They are exploiting the gray areas in privacy laws.
Well, it totally depends. If it is a tourist attraction or something of the sort, it probably would be ok. If it is in front of a person's house or residential area, it could be invading privacy.
Seriously, I don't care that my house is on their street view... I mean common, it doesn't really 'invade' my privacy. Its only the front of your house. You can look in your backyard with google earth, thats disturbing.
I find Google Map's satellite view and street view very useful when I'm looking around to find property or land. You can see and learn more about the neighborhood.

Agreed, I mean c'mon, its not like you can see anything important. Besides, ever taken off in a plane? You'll see the same things from there.
Street View is also very useful when you are researching on real estate. You can see the neighborhood without having to actually go there every time you want to check something out at or around the property of your interest.
