Monster or hoax

Jinx
I came across this article and picture on gawker.com

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/theampersand/archive/2008/07/30/sea-monster-washes-up-on-gawker.aspx

The body doesn't look like any known species, and it doesn't look photoshoped.
It's shiny enough that it could be latex, I suppose, but if it is, whoever made it should be working for Hollywood.

Has anyone else heard about this "Montauk Monster"? Has anyone come forward and admitted to the hoax? Is there any chance that this thing is real?

Personally, I'm leaning toward the hoax explanation.

I'm including the photo here... warnings to those with weak stomachs

DoctorBeaver
It's certainly not like any animal I've ever seen, and I've seen some very strange ones (you never saw my wife!). There's not a nuclear plant anywhere near, is there? Laughing

I've seen some damned clever stuff done with Photoshop, so I suppose that could be the answer. However, the article talks about eye witnesses. It's possible that more that 1 person is in on the hoax, but the more there are, the more likely it is that someone will own up to it.

Latex? Again, possible. I used to work next door to a film/TV special effects workshop and some of the stuff they turned out was incredible.

I'd like to have seen a wider angle photo to see if there are any tracks.

For now I shall keep an open mind.

I think it may be photoshopped - the shadows arent in the right places I dont think..
Libby
Probably viral marketing. ******.
Tumbleweed
Looks like a cat with no nose and some upper teeth missing

I would tend to agree. Does not look realistic and the shadows are wrong. Also the background. Something is not right with portions of the sand.
Bikerman
I agree - it looks dodgy. Look at the shadow on the head and compare to the rest of the body. Then consider the wave patterns in the sand which would have been formed as the tide went out. Looks wrong to me. You'd need a high res image to zoom into to definitely tell...
DoctorBeaver
This could be a giveaway...

Since when did animals give a one-fingered salute? Smile [/img]
miacps
Whatever it is, assuming it was actually an animal and not an elaborate fake, you can be sure that it was a land animal and not something from the sea. Could it be a hyena? Razz
ocalhoun
If it is real, where is it now? They didn't just leave it there on the beach, did they? My thought would be to bring it to the experts and see if they could identify it. (I would also take more than one picture.)

Detailed pictures of parts, especially the feet, might also help. (There being only one available picture argues strongly for the hoax theory.) Something to compare with it for size would also be good.

Whatever it is (unless it is a hoax), it is probably some mundane animal distorted by being exposed to the elements after dying. My guess would be a dog or a cat, bloated, shriveled, and missing some parts.
MrBlueSky
Hires version:

It was on the news over here a few days ago. The anchorman said it was a raccoon or something like that, which had been in the water for a long time after dying. But they didn't mention a source for that claim.
ocalhoun
^Am I the only one who sees a strip of what looks like man-made cloth around its front right leg?

Oh, and the high res version shows they fly on it, so you can at least make a better guess of its size now.
Bikerman
This just shows the problem nowadays with photographic 'evidence'. The advent of photo-retouching software and associated technology means that the old adage 'the camera never lies' is now completely redundant.
An amateur like me can fairly easily re-touch (or even compose from scratch) an image in Photoshop that would be very hard for even experts to spot. There are often some giveaways but not always...
Jinx
Yeah, I saw the strip of cloth, or leather maybe.

Another article I read about it said some guy came along and scooped it up in a wheelbarrow... said he was gonna stuff it and mount it on his wall. He should have left it for the authorities so they could find out what it was... but then, that would take all the mystery out of it.

I think there are some photos from other angles on Gawker.
But yeah, most likely it's a common four legged mammal of some sort that just been deformed from being tossed around in the tide for a while. The action of the waves and sand would have taken off any fur.

The upper jaw still looks a lot like a beak, though.

realistically, though I hate to think that a person could be so cruel I know that it does happen, the fact that it's legs are tied makes me think it was probably an unwanted dog that got "disposed of" by being tossed overboard.

Postscript - Oh, now that I see the hi res version, it's definitely not a dog... it's got fingers instead of paws. I guess raccoon is a better guess.
Gagnar The Unruly
I think it's a raccoon. The upper jaw isn't a beak, it's simply a skull with missing teeth. You can actually see the holes for the incisors and canines. Here's a raccoon jaw for reference. It's a good match to my eyes.

miacps
It's definitely got the front paws of a raccoon. Yuck..
SHARPBALL
It is fake, Why?

Wel it's a holywood reporter that did the discovery an made it public.

I think its a teaser for a comming movie, wait and see i wil not bee the last monster we see.
rshanthakumar
Whatever it is, it made interesting reading for some time... Very Happy

Someone told here, that he was died long time ago.

Maybe this is pre stage of our evolution?Maybe we know only a little about ourselves.

This creature even has a fingers.I can see, that he had a hair.

TurtleShell
I'm going to agree with the raccoon pple. The head looks pretty obviously decomposed...I'd believe that's just bone sticking through the front...
lfg4ever
I think no one will agree on what it is because:
1. They maybe haven’t seen a raccoon.
2. They it doesn't look real
3. The pictures are kind of contradicting each other.
My opinion is, I have no clue what-so-ever!
MGC77
It is a racoon. The question though is why a racoon washed up on the beach?

Are they known to surf ?
ocalhoun
It probably ended up in a river, and rode the currents to the ocean, and then to wherever the photo was taken.

The surprising thing is that nothing ate it before it got there.
MGC77
Yes that sounds plausible. That didn't take long.

Anyway some people will imagine all sorts of things. Maybe it comes from watching horror movies/action thrillers and stuff.
Cwspartacus
its a little strange with the shadows but i cant say realy if it is fake or real
bonestorm74
Looks pretty convincing, but who knows, could be photoshopped or could be a recognised species that's deteriorated badly and just looks weird. Interesting photo anyway.
lfg4ever
Hmm...maybe it's a dinosaur that hasn't been discovered yet.

With fur?
lfg4ever
OK so maybe it isn't but the fur does look fake to me. Actually the whole thing does.
lfg4ever
It must have been stinking real bad!
metalfreek
Never saw animals like that but i think it is the missing link between a bat and some kind of repatile if it is genuine but i think it is another scam.
chasbeen
It's disappointing. I think it could be anything and anyway where's the body which museum did it go to. There was a story recently about a mysterious animal chased by police in Australia.
They filmed it as it was running away. Looked like a dog until it looked back.
lfg4ever
What, I'm interested. Do you, or anyone, know what its head looks like?
Silk2008
Whatever it is it's freaking ugly!!! I think if I lived there I'd start packing a pistol. Laughing

I saw that on TV. It just looked like an ugly dog to me.
lfg4ever
I'm over this thing wateva it is.
