Fatherland by Robert Harris

Hmm, I honestly haven't read any fiction (non school related, at least) for a long time, and the first novel I picked up of my own will recently was Fatherland by Robert Harris.

For a brief idea of what it's about: written in the early 90's, it's an alternate-reality where Germany wins WWII. It's set in the mid-60's, and it's about an SS officer and how he unravels a mystery within the Greater German Reich.

Personally, my favourite genre of book is non-fiction, so this alternate-historical fiction is probably a bit closer in trying to emulate that. But while it was a pretty decent suspense/thriller, I was dissapointed because I didn't feel it offered much in terms of "history". What I mean is, replace the Nazis with any other regime, and replace the SS officers with any other character, and it's basically, still essentially the same.

Dunno. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but I also personally expected a little bit more from someting of this genre.
