Just released Monday, and designed by original lead google engineers. Cuil indexes 3 times more than google, and has a different algorithm than that of google's sole popularity ranking -- which sometimes yields in false results due to google bombing.
search results are pretty clean - 3 columns, no ads.
Still a long way to go, but I think this is probably the only search engine that could make a dent in google's search engine, than yahoo, and microsoft tried to accomplish. Who knows maybe google, ms, yahoo may want to make an acquisition.

I tried cuil in yesterday, but it didn't give so good results by my name. Sometimes the columns showed same results but in different order.
And about ad-free. Google was too at first. I'm only wondering how cuil will financialize itself :/
If they launched it a few days ago and it indexes 3 times faster, it'll take a while to get close to Google. Google has years of indexing.
Wow!
I love the way it displays the results. It looks great!
Thanks for the link
Update: It's been in the news.. on the BBC News website too! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7528503.stm
While the site seems great, Google will never fail. It's just huge, and unbelievable. Although, they should update their template!
I like the change, definitely.
I am tired of the plain white page Google has always had. I like the way they display the search results as well.
But no ads? What about PPC? I actually liked the PPC, and is actually good for searching for company's.
I will probably be using it a little bit here and there.
This site looks pretty nice but I still do like the simplicity of Google. The search results page almost seems a little cluttered to me.
Google already did a blog post in reaction to Cuil... "We've known it for a long time: the web is big."
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/we-knew-web-was-big.html
... so the new search engine seems to be something that Google gives a lot of attention.
From what I understand, CUIL (pronounced cool) is supposed to have a larger index of sites and be better organized to produce more relevant search results. I checked out the search engine and I definately like the colors, I'm not quite comfortable with interface yet. It seems to load and transition things very smoothly and thats extremely appealing to me. I thinks it's definately a step towards the future of searching the web. I don't know if anyone where remembers but there were several popular search engines ( and some not so popular one) before google came along. Webcrawler was actually one of my favorites along with altavista.
Interesting. I will sure try it. Thanx for posting about it.

Here are the team behind Cuil...
Anna Patterson: worked on Google's search index.
Russell Power: worked on Google's search index.
Louis Monier: founder of the AltaVista search engine.
Tom Costello: worked on IBM's WebFountain project.
Why do they think that they're better than Google?
They have 4 major claims with which they want to distinguish from Google... they have the biggest index, they thinks that popularity is not as important as Google has been said, they use new results page format, and they does not collect user data.
The question is are those Cuil's results really better than Google's?

I don't think so... Just search for "slashdot" and it will show you some images that have nothing to do with Slashdot.
And I do think it's results page is way to cluttered...
While it looks very nice I would never consider using this search engine (just yet) for serious purposes. The only searches I could find that displayed correct results were those for massive companies (Google, etc.)
Nice looking site, results are too cluttered
Will never over take google tho, google is too massive
It's nice for directory search/wiki search. But not for web search. Not for me
I think it looks nice (I may have to add my site to their index). Hope it works out, I would love to see some (friendly please) competition between Google and someone else.
Looks to see nice. But it can't able to beat google.
The idea is nice.. But I don't like it!
I tried to search for some information, but no, i find just abstract infos.
If someone wants to replace Google, he has to do someting better than that!
but cuil will not come near to our google
Cuil, pronounced "cool," has officially launched.
All the kool kids are talking about it. The question is whether anyone will use it.
As a new search engine, Cuil is a longshot. It's no Google Killer.
Check out Cuil.com. Google needs the competition. But don't expect a revolutionary search experience. The results page looks very much like Guy Kawasaki's Alltop.com.
Cuil was created by former Google engineers Anna Patterson, Russell Power and Louis Monier, who picked up $33 million in venture capital to launch the search engine.
So how is Cuil different than Google? They're claiming bragging rights for search index size: 120 billion Web pages. While Patterson says that's 3X the size of Google's index, most people acknowledge that size doesn't matter.
As Google's official blog notes, many pages not indexed either point to similar content or would diminish the quality of its search results in some other way. T
Of course, Cuil can't use PageRank to organize results. So Cuil apparently assesses the actual content of a page.
Cuil's results are most similar to universal search, displaying photos horizontally across the page. Sidebars can be clicked on to learn more about related topics.
In a nod to privacy, Cuil promises not to retain users' search histories or surfing patterns.
feels like iphone software
Very cool i will try and use for a while see how i get on
I am likes this search engine and want to say good luck to this project. Hope it will survive.
well lets see if this really will put a dent, nice layout for the search results though, haven't really tried definite searches
yes, it was clean, and so on... But I did not like that the results came in coloums and rows. My eyes get lost before I find my result.
I did a search for a page at my website. Google got more results than cuil. Cuil got some results that Google did not find, but those were mirrors of my site, made by some nasty crawler. I think I'll stick to google!
In google you can also search by country and language - and much more!
Well, I used to use google for everything ex. gmail, search ect. and then found out that there bad just like microsux... I don't like Cuil, it's too bland. I like yahoo better but it still is bad lol

How so are they bad or "evil" like "microsux"?
