Installing Windows Vista is more reliable because it uses image-based setup, which is less error-prone and deterministic than a scripted installation process.

The Windows Imaging (WIM) format is a single file that contains one or more complete Windows Vista installation images. To conserve space, Windows Vista compresses the file and stores only a single copy of files that more than one image share. As a result, Windows Vista images eliminate redundancy, decrease file size, and reduce installation time.

Windows Vista features and functions can, in some cases, be individually added to and removed from the image file. Because languages are optional elements, you can distribute just the English language to one group of computers while distributing French, German, and Spanish to a different group.

As a result, IT staff members no longer spend time preparing regional versions of Windows Vista. Therefore, the time needed for testing, updating, and configuring changes to these versions has been eliminated.

Offline configuration

Many deployment tasks—such as configuring the hard disk, capturing an operating system image, or launching setup—must be done while Windows Vista is shut down. Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) enables administrators to configure Windows offline as well as diagnose and troubleshoot hardware problems before launching the setup process. Windows PE supports both 32-bit and 64-bit computer hardware and can be run from a USB drive or RAM disk. Administrators can change general and regional settings, apply operating system updates, add drivers, install patches, and add or remove optional components such as languages without starting the operating system contained within the image.

Windows Vista will include tools that support offline configuration, including Ximage, a command-line tool that runs in Windows PE to capture and customize Windows Vista image (WIM) files offline.
