What softwares can be used to convert and compress .dat files to divx/xvid?
Convert .dat to Divx - software suggestions needed.
By the extension .dat I'll assume your talking about a VCD movie.
Whilst I can't tell you any specific software, a quick Google search found over 15 million pages.

i would use vcdgear to convert dat to mpg, then use the community edition of divx to convert mpg to divx.
I would suggest you to use xilisoft video converter
I don't really know... VLC? rofl i think it can convert quite a bit of stuff.

VLC is just a player and not a converter.
Divx Converter which you get with Divx player is the best one I think. You can only get a trial version of it. So check their official web site.
