Drupal. It is very professional and modular. There is lots of thing to configurate, but you can select which components you need.
i would prefer joomla if u r looking for portals. its the best but then again, i dont know if it works with SMF! check it out and do let us know
Have you used tinyportal? I think it very cool portal for some forum (SMF, IPP, VBB..)
Beside joomla, tinyportal is a best choice for newbie who want to creat their forum by themself.
