This is the beauty of the Internet. It does not take a huge investment to do a business online. However it has to be a good site. You cannot make a site that is of no interest to anyone popular. However there are certain tools that you can use to ensure that your site gets listed high up in search engines. Some people offer free gifts with their product. Others work up to that point by providing information related to the product as a free gift in an Acrobat file. Others get people to register for a regular newsletter. That way they also obtain names of people that are part of their own home-grown marketing list. If you do not have the time to invest in the Website you can outsource everything that is necessary. I.e. someone can design the Website for you. Someone else can write the copy for your Website. Yet another person can work on getting you up on the search engines and if you pay for a ranking you can be listed immediately.

Free investments will be necessary. First sell something on ebay. Then , use the aquired money to invest into your site promotion(putting ads on other sites). The most important thing is to beware of scams such as sending money to paypal accounts which will pay you back.

A site become popular if its content is powerful, unique and full with all necessary requirements, because famous search engines analyze, test and compare related sites. Also site should be user friendly and interactive and have some type of monopoly, such as jeevansati.com for marriage, naukri.com for job and frihost for php hosting.

You can build a site and have to promote it patiently. Otherwise, it does not work. You need to dedicate yourself to the job as well.

just be very creative on your website. do a lot of hardwork by marketing your site and think what will be the trend a few months by now, not thinking what is the trend now a days. you have to be a 2 steps ahead of others and get more prospect clients everyday.

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing. Depending on your budget and experience there are many different ways to market your website and products. Some of my favorite promotional efforts include viral marketing, directing marketing, pay per click, blogs, social media etc. A lot of these can be done for free and free traffic has actually been some of my most profitable traffic.

There is too much competition on the internet, that to have a success on internet marketing is becoming increasingly expesive and difficult. The things that can make your site less expensive or paying, like advertisement etc., you get only if some substantial number of people are regularly visiting your site. Therefore if your site is backed by your network which you already have and or you are building your network on groung your network marketing mat also be successful and one of the options may be MLM too.

Ah, but that benefits us, the consumers! Smile

Due to the increased competition, better products are made more efficiently -- only to be sold at a fraction of the price! As a result of this, it's easy to see how to make your online business a total success -- sell the best possible products produced in the most efficient way at the lowest feasible price Smile

To get started, it's best to advertise using viral marketing -- or, put differently, word of mouth. Look, for example, at the success of the website Woot -- a site which has become well known not through costly advertisement but through the use of putting a new spin on marketing, and following the three aforementioned rules -- and letting viral marketing edo the rest. So, yes, a small site with good content can always be made into a popular site Smile

You will, however, need to invest (at least a bit!) in the capital required to get an online site going. Not too much is required here, however, if you can do the right things. Start off with smaller goods which you can buy cheaply and sell cheaply. Maybe you can even sacrifice your profit margin for a while! In doing this, you'll be adhering to the above mentioned rules and be benefiting from the advertising that comes with everything. As your business grows in size, you can purchase goods in larger quantities and thus use the deflated price of such goods to create a profit margin without detriment to your users, and eventually you'll surely become a cornerstone in the industry! Remember that it will take time, however, and with enough patience you'll certainly be on your way to eCommerce-riches Wink

Nope, it's quite simple.

Build a website that's ready for the masses, with a unique idea, and useful content. Make it something that your visitors will use daily, and make it easy for them to share it with their friends.

Google, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, ... You don't see them shoving ads in your face, do you? (Well, aside from the ones on their website?) So why should you? On the other hand, websites that get popular by advertising, always seem to keep that temporarily. They need to keep advertising to stay on top.

And if you have no visitors, as opposed to a small number, then what you need to do is ask people for advice. Get your website reviewed. Ask people why they use similar services. Ask people if they see any flaws in similar services. And then fix those on your website.

What kind of site? A blog, a merchandise site, etc.? It makes all the difference.

If it's more of a personal site, the #1 factor is "does my site solve a problem or help/influence people in any way?" You can't make a site about any old thing and expect it to go somewhere...just not how it works.

But to answer your questions directly:

What does it take -- Determination, a good topic, TIME, personality, ability to connect with people without seeing them, etc.

Does it require huge investment -- Absolutely not, but it will definitely require your own domain/hosting and perhaps a web designer of some nature if you're not familiar with programming (if it's a blog, this task is basically negated with platforms like Wordpress).

Can a small site grow to be popular -- Most certainly, as most websites started small, in the shadows, in someone's basement. It obviously helps if you're in a position like Microsoft launching Bing, but it's not mandatory. Some people blogging to six figure incomes started out on free sub-domains like Wordpress.com and Blogger. Some of the most popular sites around these days were started by average people working normal jobs or sitting in college classes (Facebook for example).

It's by no means an easy task, it takes years most of the time to take a site from nothing to moderate level income. Most people tire out within a few months or a year. The select few who persist are the people making 5-6 figure incomes working from their homes (Problogger.com, John Chow, Yaro Starak, etc.).

And of course, you have to get lucky with your timing. Most of the big time bloggers around these days started right when blogging was booming as well as when the Internet itself was booming.

What does it take to grow user base -- Content. Content. Quality content. Unique content. Interesting content. Helpful content. As you can guess, it takes content. Nobody visits a site of little use to them. Why should they? You have to show that you have some expertise in the field you're writing on, you have to show you have credibility and not just making things up. You have to build trust, one person at a time.

And of course, working on search engine optimization and other general market strategies will bring in the traffic. But without the content, all that traffic will bounce off your site in 6 seconds. Content is the net, without it your site is useless.
