What do you think about global dimming?

I saw a PBS special that showed that global dimming is duking it out with global warming. It said that global warming would be even worse than it is if it weren't for global dimming counter-acting it. What do you think?

With all the media-hype about global warming, global dimming seems to have completely escaped the media attention in Australia.... I haven't heard anything about it.

If there is such a counter-effect to global warming that is currently active, then it would be reducing global warming. I suppose that also depends on how much global warming is due to mankind's activities. If global warming and dimming are natural processes that are meant to balance, then mankind's activities may have tipped the scales past the point where the system can recover by itself.

Ironically Australia is one of the important places for the hypothesis. In Oz (as well as other countries, of course) there are a lot of people who keep evaporation data (they basically pour water into a pan and measure how much evaporates over a fixed period. This gives a measure of solar energy hitting the earth). It was noticed that there was a reduction in the amount of evaporation (and thus solar irradiance hitting earth) even though there was an increase in temperature over the same period. This led to the global dimming hypothesis which is now pretty much accepted..

Interesting... thanks for the link, Bikerman.
