I'm tired of this, but is it a sport now? TSN and SportsNet have it on all the time...
Poker a sport?
well with televised poker becoming so huge over recent years, what genre of channels would you most likely find it? it definetely wouldnt be the cbs, abc, nbc type channels. the most logical are all of the sports channels. but it doesn't mean i'd classify it as a sport.
hell espn shows the spelling bee and sometimes dominoes but in no way would i consider those sports. its just a matter of there not really being any other channel for them.

well i suppose dimonos would be a sport if u make it really creative
I think is a game . not a sport. Myabe A spirt is something you practice phisicly. But i dont know. I like playing poker,
its not sport, its lucky... the only thing what not depends of lucky is the ability to cheat... it gives a kind of competition, but is very strange to call it of sport
It's not a sport. It's gambling. In order to win, you have to be lucky. Sure you can try to strategize to try and get the best possible hand, but you also have to be lucky in order to do so.
However, for the purposes of this thread, there is NO WAY I would consider poker a sport.
To ESPN (and other sports channels): Please take poker off your station...it DOES NOT belong there!

Is chess a sport?
Poker certainly requires more skill than luck although I'm not sure if I'd put it into the sports section, probably recreation and games.

the skill aspect of poker doesnt come into play after the luck of the cards you are dealt. after each round of betting luck kicks in when the next card(s) are revealed. then you have the skill in what you choose to do with your cards. do you try and bluff when you have nothing but you feel ur opponents have nothing either and you can use your position to your advantage to get them to fold allowing you to steal the pot?
regardless of how you look at card/board games they can't be considered a sport, i just dont see how they can be classified as such.

No way is it a sport.
But it is MARKETABLE!
So ESPN is just riding the popularity bandwagon to make a few bucks.

I think physical exercise is sport, and poker is not physical, so it's not a sport. There's not really a category for it I think. It's a (sometimes professional) game.
it isn't!!
you dont really need to do somethink for win!
this only lucky game!
not like chess or tennis or another sport!

yes it is, just like chess is a sport. (with the mind)
The best answer to is a sport a sport, that i`ve heard is
"If you can play it in your own day shoes its not a sport, its a game"
"If you can play it in your own day shoes its not a sport, its a game"
One school of thought I have heard is : "It's not a sport unless it has a ball, a puck or a gun." I think a sport has to be a competition between two worthy and equal adversaries, so the gun sports would have to be with a prey about two times the hunter's size, like a rhino. Fishing is considered a sport, but the competitors are unequal : A five pound bass and a 200 pound drunk. At least poker has two equal and (hopefully) worthy adversaries and sometimes they are both drunks. Maybe a sport shouldn't be a sport if you can compete when you are hammered, If so, then poker isn't a sport. :)
No way! How can you count poker as a sport? So what if it's televised? It's just an indoor card game. See, there are two types of indoor games that don't require much physical activity ... board games and card games ... here you have to exercise your brains and not your body. Most of these games rely on luck more than skill - for example, Monopoly, Poker, etc. Only a few like Chess, Reversi, Scrabble, etc. rely on skill more than luck.
Yeah, I also wouldn't classify poker as a sport. Even though it does appear to be on all the sport channels later on at night (In Australia anyway).
I would agree that the 'sport channel' is the best place for it to be shown though, it's like a cousin or close relative to 'sport' - because it is a still a game, it just doesn't require much physical activity at all to do it.
Either way i find it fun to both watch and play, so good on it for being televised!

Poker is a sport, you need to be good at maths because of the probability-things. really difficult to say this in English (I'm from Belgium and I speak dutch):p
Well, bridge is a sport, so why not poker? Although personally, I find them games, not sports...
No, no, no, no and no! Poker is a GAME, it is not a sport. The definition of
is:
Poker does not meet the criteria.

as much as poker needs finess, skill, and knowledge to play it well, i find it very hard to call poker a sport. it's almost like calling a virus a living thing. a virus pretty much is a living thing, meeting several qualifications and aspects of a living thing, just slightly out of definition of what is a 'living thing'.
likewise, poker has several aspects of sports. the competition to be the last man standing, the knowledge and science behind theories and actions, the mind games and strategies played, the practices and drive that is needed to win, and careful control over facial expressions, breathing patterns, and hand movements. (not to mention the fact that the top players earn millions of dollars)
however, i still have a hard time calling poker technically a sport, just like i have a hard time calling virus a technically a living thing.
i wish my poker buddies would come back from their summer trips XD.
