Photos of a day at the Motorcycle/scooter races

wellerchap
Friday night rode over to Oulton Park International motor racing circuit in Northern England) with my pal for a day at the races on saturday. It was good of Lee, another friend, to ride his Vespa the 250+ miles up from South Wales on his own, and Paul to glide up on that bloody big greasemachine of his from near London...hope they had a good day, despite our scooter club's Lambretta not performing. First practise saw our man Martin get out & complete the session, but sounding a bit rough....turned out he'd pretty much done the lot in 3rd gear as he couldn't get 4th!
After some tinkering & a bit of carb tuning it was 1st race time and the thing was a pig to start, but he made the starting gate, just in time. The parade lap saw all scooters re-emerge on the grid, all except for our man Martin....it'd siezed on the way round & after the race a strip of the top end showed pretty sever damage. The rings were worked out of the piston-sieze, bits cleaned up etc & re-assembled, but it was all to no avail as it died again, just before race 2 was called.
The racing really was a joy, despite Martin not being involved, and the current bun did it's best....sunburn round me neck now & stings like hell when I look back over either shoulder on the scooter.
Great ride back over the Pennines with yet another friend, Steve, who'd made it out for the day, saturday teatime.

Moonbase Feckspeed, friday night.

With lovely sunshine, not a good day for pushers of unreliable bikes(ie. ME!!). The old legs are a bit achey today!

Some of those big chappies were quick!

Always a great spectacle to see the sidecars....

Some of the gathered scooters....

Meanwhile, back on the track...

Those races look like they could be interesting. Its too bad you're friend couldn't compete in them. It must've been one of those days where nothing seems to go right. It must be fun to fix these scooters as quickly as you can, except when you can't figure out whats really wrong.

Hi Magician, we have a couple of guys who know scooters inside out, so it does often get fixed up in time, but the stresses that go through an engine over 15 or 16 miles at full throttle, and quick gear changes mean than any slight weakness will show itself. When it goes "bang" as ours often does, there's nothing you can do I'm afraid.
I'm just there to provide the leg-power for starting! Very Happy

You may be surprised my friend...these scooters fly down the straights at 95-100mph, and often beat the 350cc motorcycles in the classic races.
Would YOU have what it takes to hang on in there at those speeds?
