My parents had put new tires on my jeep as a birthday present, and I hadn't yet tried the truck out on any serious off-roading, so I decided to go try it out.
First of all, I quickly became glad of the maneuverability and tight turning radius of a jeep when I came to a dead end:
I then came to the first little challenging part, which it handled with no problem.
So far the new tires (BF goodwrench all terrain TA's) are doing just fine, despite not being really designed for mud.
Then I came across some more difficult sections though:
I made it past those, and stopped to take another picture, while going around a turn in the fire line that I was following. There is a layer of dry dirt on top, but unkown to me, a nasty slippery mud is underneath.
The path ahead becomes too skinny to go down, so I decide to turn around.
That is when I have a problem:
My new tires have filled completely with packed in mud, they are just not aggressive enough for this sticky, slippery stuff.
Three of my tires have dug deep holes, and taken the weight off of the fourth, so my truck is pretty helpless at this point.
Not an impossible problem though. First I get out the chains and do some digging:
Then the come-along (a man-powered winch)
With the addition of a nice long fence post, it gives me this set-up for pulling my truck out:
It was difficult, even with the extra leverage, but I managed to pull it out, then fill in the holes, and drive out. At least now the bumper sticker my mom gave me is very appropriate:
